Congressional Democrats Are Spineless Idiots
It needs to be said. Democrats in Congress, especially in the Senate, are spineless idiots who couldn’t maneuver their way out of a paper bag.
Why do I say so? Because they’re going to let Gorsuch be the next Supreme Court justice. But this stupidity isn’t recent. It’s at least eight years old.
When asked about Gorsuch’s nomination, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) said, “I hope we do vote him down. But make no mistake: If we do hold the line with 60 votes, Mitch McConnell will change the rules the next day. I do not have any hope that he won’t change the rules the minute he doesn’t get his way. So it likely will be 51 votes, regardless, at any given time that a nominee is blocked.”
It’s great that she “hopes” to block by Cloture vote, but distressing that she doesn’t know that enough Democrats will try to block it. Right now, there are 46 Democrats and two Independents that caucus with them—one being Bernie Sanders. This means that at least seven Democrats would have to approve of cloture. And a couple have already said they will.
However, this is only part of the problem; the other part, as I said, started at least eight years ago. Before 2006, when Democrats in the minority had at least enough spine to block the most egregious Bush court nominees, enraged Republicans threatened to use what they called the “Nuclear Option”—to end the filibuster. Democrats fearfully backed down and made deals. That was bad enough, but the real stupidity came a few years later.
When Obama was elected, sure enough, Republicans acted as a 100% unified block to deny cloture on as much as they possibly could. Even when Demorats had 60 votes in the Senate, they still had problems with DINOs like Lieberman and greedy holdouts trying to use their vote to get special deals. When Republicans soon after got 41 votes, they started filibustering virtually everything. More than that, it because immediately clear that Republicans would continue to do so as long as they were in the minority.
By that time, Democrats knew two things: Republicans would abuse the filibuster rule to incredible lengths, but threaten to scrap it once Democrats tried to use it.
The choice was obvious: scrap the rule. After all, if you’re allowing your enemy to use it endlessly it so you can use it, but won’t use it yourself because you’re scared to lose it, then you are—in technical terms—an idiot.
And that’s what’s happening now. After eight years in which Democrats could have done amazing things but were too faint-hearted to challenge Republicans, Democrats are again too chickenshit to put up a fight and dare Republicans to carry out their threat. They have chosen the worst of all possible paths.
If Democrats scrapped the rule in 2009, they would be on equal terms with the Republicans. If they were to call the Republican’s bluff today and win, they would be on equal grounds with the Republicans. If they were to call the Republican’s bluff today and lose, they would be on equal grounds with the Republicans starting now.
Instead, they take the spineless route, giving Republicans a huge advantage over them. Worse, since they look like spineless idiots, they are just going to lose more elections and give Republicans even more power.
Democrats, when an Independent like Sanders is a better Democrat than most others in Congress, you know that you’re lousy at being Democrats.
