Catching On

July 7th, 2010

I remember back when politicians’ campaign posters seemed like entrants in a nationwide Ugly Man contest. Seriously, most of the candidates were hideous. Huge warts, metal teeth, bad comb-overs, buggy eyes–the works. It seems that candidates today are more hip to the concept of not looking like diseased toads.

Which, in a few different ways, is sad.

Also hard to miss: a lot more women on the posters today than there were 20 or 30 years ago. There’s even Josei-to, or the “Women’s Party.”

Seems our friend Egi Saori is against voting for foreigners. Nice. Bet she still wants my taxes.

yah, that People’s New Party looks to be chock full of nuts — against legal separate names for married couples, too.

The looker for the Minshuto has an interesting history: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renhō

The みんな党 is also interesting I guess.

Renhou and the Nakagawa guy are running for reelection, as is Koike on the party list ballot.

Can’t say you don’t have choice in Japan, tho the at-large voting system is pretty whacky, with people of the same party competing against each other for votes.

When I was in Japan I didn’t have the first interest in the elections and couldn’t tell you what election season it was.

I kinda liked being that apolitical. Life’s a lot simpler not having to care.

    Hi there,

I have to say, the ladies and gentlemen on those posters genuienly look quite nice. Far better than our chanceloress in germanny, Frau Merkel, she actually looks like a diseased toad. Check it out:
