WiMAX, Anyone?
Just wanted to know if anyone reading this has tried WiMAX in Tokyo, knows how to deal with UQ, and can give advice. I am thinking of switching to the service, but their plans are, erm, rather “detailed.” Looks like with a one-year subscription you can get a good rate (¥3,880 per month), but cannot make out the technical details associated with it. They also have a “multiple devices” option, which I would need if Sachi uses the Internet at home while I use it away, but I can’t discern if by “device” they mean a device which changes the WiMAX signal to WiFi, or if they mean a device which gets on the WiFi network created by that device. Huge difference–we have half a dozen computers and mobile devices we would use with WiFi. There’s also a trial you can do for free–as you can imagine, with all these, there are so many details, dealing with just a web form is less than ideal.

I got Wi-MAX based on Armand’s recommendation, who heard that you were getting it. I’m using it as I write and send this. No problems so far. As you may recall every time about this year I go see the ‘in-laws’ over in Kanazawa, and sadly, they have no Internet, which does not work so well for me. So, having ascertained that the service works over there I bit. Of course I am now paying for two Internet connections, but I got the month to month, which means I can and may well quit after a month when I am back from my holiday sojourns. Or I may quit my other service depending. The monthly rate is about 4,500 yen plus the 2,500 start up for the month by month, 3,800 if you go for a year. I’ll let you know how it works out.

Cool! Do you have a pocket base station, or is it just the plug-in receiver for now? I’d be interested to know how the pocket thing handles on trains and the like. And did you bypass the 15-day trial?
Yessir, “pocket base station” it is–I think. Well, they had two models of the pocket unit, and I got the older one, as it cost all of 1 yen, while the new model was 2,500 or something. Apparently they have the same functionability. I will be taking it on the train to day and will let you know. No 15 day trial for me–I’m on for the long-haul–30 days
