So I noticed that Apple now allows buyers to configure the low-end Retina Pros. When I saw that, I was nonplussed, upset that Apple had turned around and had essentially denied me the ability to get more storage in my computer… and then I saw that the storage upgrade would have cost $500, and realized that I would never have gotten it in the first place. Ah well.
$100 for the CPU bump may or may not be worth it. 300MHz! IIRC I paid ~$1000 to upgrade my 150Mhz PPC 604 to a 266Mhz G3, LOL. Then again that did double my processing power, so maybe $1000 for a Octocore Intel CPU would be more tempting.
This reminds me that I still can’t believe Apple went Intel . . .
Considering how Apple is making its own mobile chips, I wonder how long they will *stay* Intel. They do seem to be inching towards a walled-garden ecosystem model for everything. Note how, in 10.8, they are adding the “feature” where you can (1) allow all apps to be installed; (2) allow only verified apps to be installed; or (3) only allow Apple app store purchases to be installed. And if you choose the former of the three, Apple scares you with a dialog about making your computer insecure. While this is not proof that they will eventually raise the walls and close the gates, I would not be surprised if they wound up doing that.
How long before people will have to start jailbreaking their Macs?
