The Buck Stops Anywhere Except Here

October 6th, 2006

This off the news wire:

House Speaker Dennis Hastert yesterday took responsibility for the growing congressional page scandal but said he has done nothing wrong …

“The buck stops here,” Hastert (R-Ill.) said at a press conference outside his office in Batavia, Ill., adding that he will let the numerous investigations determine whether anyone — including any of his aides — did anything wrong.

Ah, I see. After spending a week contradicting other Republicans’ claims as well as his own, and blaming everyone else in sight, Hastert now becomes Trumanesque and puffily pronounces “The Buck Stops Here” whilst simultaneously denying he did anything wrong, but he’ll check to see if his staff broke any laws.

How bizarrely contorted can an admission of not taking responsibility be?

I sadly was half-asleep when I heard this last night, but it seems he is even trying to throw some blame at the Clinton administration. Amazing.
