For Sale

May 23rd, 2007

Are you in Tokyo? Want to buy a fridge? A washer-dryer? Two microwave ovens? A nice fan-driven gas heater? A gas range? One or two rice cookers? A sofabed? A one-person western-style bed? Maybe a desk or two? Various other pieces of furniture? A vacuum cleaner? Various and sundry other household items?

Let’s talk.

This is what happens when two people move in together: you tend to have an entire apartment’s worth of appliances and furniture left over.

I’ll likely place ads in the Daily Yomiuri and the next issue of Metropolis. Ye gads, I forgot what a pain this kind of thing is. How do you ship out all that stuff? Takkyubin will cost half as much as what we can sell the items for…

Oh yeah, a satellite dish for Sky Perfect TV with a huge balcony brace? Anyone? Anyone? Ferris?

Five weeks hardly seems like enough time already….

Well, first thing, congratulations on all the favorable developments. The new place looks great. I onced owned a condo across the street from a really good grocery store. That was like paradise – I could go shopping during the half time of a football game. I can’t imagine having all those amenities you are going to have so close, though I know it’s different in big cities where crowds are a problem.

When I left the United States, I had to get rid of everything I owned within two weeks time. A friend of mine had a son who was going to get married in the next year or so – he bought everything for two thousand dollars. This was a real bagain, but the convenience made it worth while. I kept all my books, my collection of books is enormous, all my clothes, and family items, everything else gone. That’s still a fire sale price, on steroids, I had nice furniture and three TVs one that I loved, (I kept my stereos, but they’re crappy), but I was pressed for time. I consider it a miracle that I got every thing moved out in those two weeks.

Maybe you know of someone who’s got children moving out of the nest or what not. Plus you teach at a University, some of those folks have to out fit their digs.

    Good luck, and again, congratulations.

I don’t know if Craigslist has taken off there yet, but that’s how I dump stuff here. I’m often surprised at how lightning-quick people respond to things.
