Geography 101, Fox “News” Style

July 30th, 2009

Can you spot what’s wrong with this Fox News map of the Middle East?

Fnmap01

This from the broadcast corporation whose entertainment division runs a show called “Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader?” Who knew that the consolation prize was a job in their graphics department?

Maybe the artists got their middle east geography knowledge from watching Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. In which Petra Jordan is right next to the pyramids at Giza, Egypt.

I should also say that I’m quite surprised that the Occupied West Bank is actually a different colour than Israel on a Fox News map.

    Iraq was conquered by Egypt?

My degree is in Geography, and my areas studies concentration was the Middle East. Today I can’t find a decent job, but over at the News Network that tells me that my poverty is my fault and that the economy shouldn’t be changed, they can’t even distinguish Iraq from Egypt.

Kind of frustrating to see this kind of thing.

    Tim: Frustrating yes…surprising, sadly no.

This, from Fox News…doesn’t really surprise me to be honest. Though I admit, I sat there blank for a few seconds with the thoughts “No they didn’t” running through my head, and then the fact that it’s from Fox News hit me, and all was (as much as it could be) right with the world. The day Fox News gets something right for once is the day I become an investment banker instead of a independent film maker.

Thanks for your blog post. What I would like to bring up is that personal computer memory should be purchased in case your computer is unable to cope with everything you do by using it. One can mount two RAM memory boards having 1GB each, as an illustration, but not one of 1GB and one having 2GB. One should make sure the maker’s documentation for own PC to be certain what type of memory space is required.
