The Difference

October 24th, 2009

A lot of people decry not just people like O’Reilley, Limbaugh, and Hannity, but Olbermann and Maddow, as if they were of the exact same stripe. And there are similarities: all are stridently partisan political pundits with popular media opinion shows. But there is a great difference: the ones on the left are far more fact-based. They don’t make up crap as much, or exaggerate as much, or mislead nearly as much as those on the right. And that’s a very significant difference: while being a partisan is one thing, being a dishonest partisan is much worse.

I will admit happily and freely that I watch the liberals–but I would stop watching them in a heartbeat if they stooped to the lying, dishonest depths that the right-wing hacks commonly lower themselves to.

Oddly, the ideological divide has us looking into mirrors, with the righties claiming MSNBC is ever bit as leftish as FOX with Olbermann and Maddow (never mind that they’ve had Alan Keyes, Andrea Mitchell, Scarborough, Buchanan, Savage, Beck, and Jesse Ventura).

This is a mug’s game. I don’t mind FOX being partisan, as long as we all understand that it is Pravda to the party.

It is troublesome that an infotainment operation can hijack and push the political process, but this is simply a bug in the system and I don’t really see a viable work-around other than just keeping up the good fight and hoping the reality-based community eventually succeeds in holding the line on the loonies.

    IOW, we’re screwed.

The big atrocity is the idea that “both sides do it”.

My mother gives me this crap all the time. When I point out the massive corruption of the Bush admininstration she says they are all corrupt. Since all politicians there’s no difference.

I’m not a religious person, but to me this “they’re all bad” is the biggest friggin sin a human can make. It is the biggest lie a person can tell.

I break the law jay walking, you brake the law murdering someone, so we’re all law breakers, we are all just criminals.

There are some corrupt Democratic politicians. There are some truth strectching, maybe even some deliberately lying liberal pundits. But, we are talking orders of magnitude.

At it’s heart, the conservative/republicans have to lie – because their real goal is to concentrate wealth and power, which also means grow the ‘haven-nots’ section of society. To do that they have to lie and dress up their movement to make it look like its about something virtuous and something good.

That’s why there’s an order of magnitude of difference.
