Power Outage… Maybe

March 16th, 2011

Looks like we might actually have a power outage today. The time is unclear, though–the local loudspeakers said 10:20, the TV seems to be saying after noon. We’ll see when it happens.

    TEPCO says Hibarigaoka gets it:

    第1グループ 12:20~16:00

    Is your school on hiatus?

    Remember to unplug everything!

I still think Japan could get through this if they cut power usage more. Cut lighting down to the minimum especially.

It should be illegal to light up a sign now.

Yep, it’s 10:40 and no power outage. We probably heard a loudspeaker announcement from a nearby neighborhood going out.

And yes, the school is on hiatus (great word, we should have used it in our official announcements; many students would have had to look it up, but that would partly be the point) until March 22 at least, depending on how things go.

I think most places of business are taking your suggestion to heart; there’s a lot of voluntary conservation right now. Though I also expect that there will be quite a bit of last-minute power usage for areas expecting an outage soon…

In any case, it’s a nice day out. We may just wind up going out for a walk. If not, I have maybe an hour or so on the laptop (battery is old, gotta get it replaced) and all day on the iPad.

Update: um… after we check radiation levels… :-) Weather reports for today and tomorrow show wind heading out to sea.
