I Think Our Standards Are Dropping

January 31st, 2005

Jogging became a popular means of exercise for a great many people, as a way to lose weight and stay healthy. Then it seems like doctors eased up a little, and said that all you need is a nice, leisurely 20- to 30-minute walk. What will be the new exercise regime of the future?

Fidgeting.

What’s next? Tapping your feet? Breathing hard?

This sounds goofy, but I’ve read similar studies before.

The problem is that they’re not exactly separating cause from effect. Odds are that thinner people have faster metabolisms and just fidget more than bigger people.

But do they stay skinny because they fidget, or do they fidget because they’re skinny people?
