More on Jesus Camp

September 19th, 2006

Here is another video showing more detail from Jesus Camp. This one shows the lady from the trailer describing how she wants Christian kids to be just like the kids of Islamic extremists, learning how to put on “bomb belts” and use hand grenades and machine guns:

The question is, what to do about it.

As Ghandi said of the British: I don’t want to fight them, I just want to get them to change their minds.

The question is, how. Gandhi thought he had an answer in nonviolence, which is really an appeal to the conscience. It took a massacre of innocent indians by a zealous British officer and a company of sepoys. The British then did a gut check – they saw 30,000 British and 300 million Indians, as realized what they didn’t want to become – it was at that point that the British realized they’d be leaving India, though World War II caused a rather prolongued delay.

In Germany it took a world war, defeat and their country in ruins to cure them.

For the life of me, I can’t figure out how to do this with our country here.

Torture hasn’t done it. Violations to the constitutions hasn’t done it. Katrina hasn’t done it.

Maybe this movie might do it. But it can’t be an 80/20 thing. This country has always had a poisoned 20% – whether they were slave holders, unrepented southerners, or rich republicans resentful of the new deal and now right wing christians.

Nothing in this country happens without money behind it. I gaurantee that if you follow the money, there’s some wealthy Neocons funding Camp Jesus somewhere.

Just maybe Camp Jesus will cause Americans to come to their senses.

I always like a good satire of the “religious” right. Saved was a lot of fun and this one looks like a hoot, too.

And that woman! I’ve never seen this actress before, but what a genius comic performer she is.
