Oh, How Embarrassing

August 13th, 2009

Remember the right-winger who insisted that Stephen Hawking would be dead now if he were British, and then everyone laughed so hard because it’s pretty well-known that Hawking is British?

Well, it also turns out that he’s a big fan of NHS, Britain’s socialized insurance program–you know, the one that’s supposed to have sentenced him to death:

“I wouldn’t be alive today if it weren’t for the NHS. I have received a large amount of high quality treatment without which I would not have survived.”

–Stephen Hawking, August 11, 2009

I can only imagine that whoever wrote that original article is really embarrassed by now, and is thoroughly grateful that his or her name was not attached to that.

Actually, if you look at the original editorial now, you’ll see that is has been amended to leave out the Hawking reference:

Editor’s Note: This version corrects the original editorial which implied that physicist Stephen Hawking, a professor at the University of Cambridge, did not live in the UK.

I love that. they did not correct themselves on the assertion that the British socialized medical system kills people with life-threatening illnesses; all they did was correct themselves on where Hawking lives. They instead inserted a long argument about how the British NHS actually does kill sick people. Just not Stephen Hawking, apparently. Still nimbly evading the NHS death squads, one supposes.
