On Being Against the Person Working for the Best Interests of the Country

September 30th, 2009

This is a problem for the right wing: when you indiscriminately oppose everything Obama does out of sheer, knee-jerk opposition to Obama himself, you begin to look stupid a lot of the time. Like it or not, Obama is the president of the United States, and part of his job is to promote the nation. Oppose that, and you find yourself opposing the United States.

An excellent example of this is the sudden right-wing opposition to the United States hosting the Olympics in 2016. Ironically, by that time, a Republican could be in office. And besides, it’s the Olympics. Countries always want the Olympics, it a prestige thing and can be a huge revenue-earner.

But apparently, conservatives now hate the idea of an American Olympics. Not only is it Obama pushing the Olympics, but he’s pushing it for Chicago. I don’t think right-wingers really had any ill will toward Chicago before, but it has become their latest favorite Worst-City-in-the-World (San Francisco and Hollywood get a break for the moment), mainly because it’s Obama’s home base, and because they love to associate Obama with the Chicago image of gangsters and corrupt union leaders. And terrorists live there too! Ones that get palled around with!

So that’s how you see a variety of right-wing media outlets bashing the president of the United States trying to get the Olympics for the United States in 2016. Kinda weird, but like I said, when you mindlessly oppose anything the president does, you wind up looking not only stupid sometimes, but bizarrely so.
