Hey! No Fair!

February 16th, 2005

When Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith is released worldwide, it will open on May 18th, 19th or 20th everywhere. Except Japan. Japan is the only country on the list with a release date later than that. And not just later, but considerably later. More than a month and a half later. What the heck is with that?!?

Can’t be because of subtitling–Korea has the same concern and they open on May 20. Latvia and the United Arab Emirates get it on time. So what’s holding things up here in Japan? Just asking.

The frustrating part is that by that time, the contents of the movie will be so widespread, so part of common knowledge that it will be well-nigh impossible not to see or hear stuff (called “spoilers”) that you don’t want to hear.

Okay, maybe Japan has O-bon season in August–but that’s still a month away from the July opening date. And you’d think that this is a movie that kind of transcends holiday seasons.

Perhaps it is a good time to visit Korea.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. A bit extreme, though… not to mention that I don’t have enough time off between mid-May and early July–if I did splurge, I’d want an actual vacation out of it, not just a weekend! And I’d probably go to a more likely vacation spot as well.

S.Korea not a good place to visit? Gee, I have a lot of friends from South Korea that I met in Law School and I came within a wisker of going there last summer.

Actually a friend and I were going to land in Tokyo, take a train to Fukuoka (spell?) a ship to Pusan, and Train up to Soul. Seeing Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima, (perhaps Osaka) along the way.

Is, was, this a bad idea? Is S. Korea that bad of a visit? I hope to go there in the next couple of years. There must be something worth seeing there, museums or something. I think just seeing a prosperous S. Korea might be worth while, and maybe the DMZ at Pamunjon.

Nothing wrong with Korea, I suppose, but if I had to choose, I’d rather go to Guam or someplace like that. Not much interest in Korea per se, just speaking personally.
