Bush Slips to 53%

August 8th, 2003

A new poll out by the Pew Center shows Bush’s popularity falling to 53% from 58% in July. This drop is in line with Bush’s popularity pattern, which is a steady decline in ratings until a crisis emerges.

By looking at the graph showing Bush’s popularity since he took office (see “Uh-Oh“), this tendency is very clear. If one follows the line, Bush is due to drop below 50% within the next month, and perhaps as low as 40% by the end of the year.

…perhaps as low as 40% by the end of the year.

And then, finally, Bush’s popularity will be close to where it should be, given his record.

I assume you’ve seen this already, but it bears repeating:

US Nobel Laureate Slams Bush Gov’t as “Worst” in American History

American Nobel Prize laureate for Economics George A. Akerlof lashed out at the government of US President George W. Bush, calling it the “worst ever” in American history, the online site of the weekly Der Spiegel magazine reported Tuesday.

“I think this is the worst government the US has ever had in its more than 200 years of history. It has engaged in extradordinarily irresponsible policies not only in foreign policy and economics but also in social and environmental policy,” said the 2001 Nobel Prize laureate who teaches economics at the University of California in Berkeley.

Akerlof is not alone in this assessment; he merely echos many, many others. Bush supporters may dismiss criticism from a professor at Berkeley, but the verdict of history will surely show that Bush was the biggest loser to ever set foot in the White House–much less live there!

And then, of course, there is also the recent speech from Al Gore, who said many of the things I’ve been feeling for quite some time. Well worth reading in its entirety.

Of course, the 50% mark is the danger zone–after all, both times Bush’s popularity hit the mid-way mark, we had crises pop up–9/11 and Iraq. Think they’ll go for a Trifecta?

Think they’ll go for a Trifecta?

Not in the remainder of this year, no. Next year? All bets are off. Who knows what that guy will do (or allow to happen) in order to win?
