Par for the Corpus

January 19th, 2007

Alberto Gonzales should be ashamed of himself, and run out of Washington, D.C. Just when you think the guy who legalized torture couldn’t go any lower, here we go again:

Arlen Specter: Now wait a minute, wait a minute. The Constitution says you can’t take it away except in the case of invasion or rebellion. Doesn’t that mean you have the right of habeas corpus?

Gonzales: I meant by that comment that the Constitution doesn’t say that every individual in the United States or every citizen has or is assured the right of habeas corpus. It doesn’t say that. It simply says that the right of habeas corpus shall not be suspended.

Uh huh. So, while the right of habeas corpus may not be denied, the people don’t actually have the right.

But then, you have to remember that this guy got his big break when he got George Bush Jr. out of jury duty when it became clear that Bush would have to perjure himself in court or reveal that he had been arrested for drunk driving.
