So Much for the Whole “No One Should Mind” Argument

July 13th, 2007

Christians who want things like religion in government and public spaces, and prayer in schools and such, try to play down the controversy by saying how the specific religion is not important, it’s the fact that people are just praying meditating, and that’s OK. Furthermore, they try to emphasize that people of other beliefs should not at all mind Christian beliefs being emphasized in these places, that it’s not offensive, or should not be offensive to people of other beliefs.

The question then put to them is simple: if the religion is not important, and no one should be offended by another’s belief system, then how about we have Islamic prayers in school, or a Hindu prayer in a government function? The religious right simply doesn’t answer such questions, in part because they can’t answer honestly without their argument falling apart. They are also aware that in a country like the U.S., if a religion intrudes, it’ll be their religion, which is OK with them.

Here’s a video of a guest chaplain in the U.S. Senate giving the invocation–but the chaplain is a Hindu. How do the tolerant Christians react? Just watch:

So much for the Christian argument that no one should mind another’s beliefs presented publicly without anyone minding.
