Not in the Stevenote

January 10th, 2007

I mentioned a rather glaring omission from the keynote last night/this morning, which was Leopard, and upon review, the keynote also did not talk about iLife, nor did it talk about iWork and the anticipated new spreadsheet software.

In fact, the keynote made no mention of software at all. Nor did it mention any upgrades to computer lines. Just the iTV and iPhone.

That’s something. It is doubtful that Apple has nothing to present along software and PC hardware lines. Which means that Apple probably has a new announcement waiting to be made at some point. After all, when are we going to find out about those “top secret” points about OS X?

One interesting detail about the iPhone that was not mentioned by the keynote bloggers was the screen resolution: 320 by 480 pixels. The 3.5-inch screen beats Zune’s “big” 3-inch screen, and has a better resolution–double, in fact–than the Zune’s or previous iPod’s 320 x 240 pixels.

Question: what will happen to existing iPod lines? Will there be no widescreen, touch-controlled iPod without a telephone? That would seem foolish. Will it include WiFi and/or Bluetooth? Will it have all the features of iPhone, but without the phone?

No time to go on about this–gotta get ready for work. More questions and speculation later…

What will happen to the iPod line is definitely on my mind. I’m figuring we’ll see a line upgrade in June when the phone comes out.

As for the total lack of software discussion, I think it has to do with the tie in to the “We’re no longer Apple Computer Inc.” If he had gone in to a software discussion, it might have looked a tad odd. My guess would be a press event in the not too far off future just for computer talk.

Addendum to the previous comment:Also, if you think about it, Jobs is a heck of a showman. If he had announced new features of Leopard, they would have gotten lost in the press hoopla over the iPhone. If he waits to do a Leopard presentation, say a month from now, he gets A)2 news cycles B)possible 2 bumps to his stock price.

From a general public view point, it may look odd he didn’t discuss Macs/Leopard. From a journalist viewpoint, damn that man is slick. From a business viewpoint it is sheer brilliance of maximizing his exposure and excitement for his brand.

Don’t even THINK about this stuff having effect on the stock price (other than an ephemeral hype driven temporary pop). Stock price is determined by revenues, and earnings, and costs- the iTv and iPhones wont contribute anything but
costs until q3/q4 and even ’08, and even then, they will
start out SMALL % of apples totals.

If you want to see the realistic bump on stock prices due
to these products, look at the manufacturers of components
for these devices, who are delivering TODAY and recieving
revs today for this stuff- plus those $$ are a larger % of
the smaller companies totals than this stuff will be to aapl.

Thank you Rock Head, I am quite aware how the stock market works. I am also aware that in the past 10 years Apple has had a 1,000% increase in their stock price. I am also aware that media hype is a temporary bump than fizzles back down, but once the snowball of hype on an Apple product starts, it’s kinda hard to stop.
