On the Dangers of Trusting Translation Software

December 10th, 2007

About a month ago I posted on something called “Juice Bao,” which showed how the literal translation of Chinese characters could lead to linguistic disaster. Today, the Language Log has a great “Chinglish” post which highlights a problem with Chinese-to-English translation software which led to unintentionally obscene–and hilarious–signage. I will shamelessly repost many of the photos (edited for size) from the original post. But please do go and read the original post to get the skinny on how this, erm, “error” cropped up.
