Eyelid Twitching
Okay, it seems like a large number of people visiting my site are coming to read about eyelid twitching. In my fourth post (I am now over 250), I simply mentioned that I had one of those eyelid twitching episodes a lot of people seem to get, and it was irritating the heck out of me.
Suddenly, this site became the Mecca for Eyelid Twitchers. I can only suppose that there is relatively little out there about it, or that more people link to my site than they do to sites all about Eyelid Twitching, so I rank higher in Google.
Anyway, I started feeling bad for all those poor twitchers who came to my site seeking information or relief, and just found a really small note saying that my own eyelid was twitching as well. I mean, misery loves company and all, but it really isn’t useful outside of that. So I figured I might as well write something more substantive about eyelid twitching, so here it is.
First off, there’s a name for this: myokymia. “Myo-” is the Greek root for “eye,” and “-kymia” means “I’m making up this etymology.” But the name, at least, is for real. They’re also called eyelid “tremors,” as it sounds kind of psycho to have a “twitch,” or worse, a “spasm.” Nobody likes spasms. “Tremors” sounds cooler.
Myokymia is, according to doctors, “a common condition where a few of the muscle fibers of the upper — or more commonly the lower — eyelid contract irregularly. … Myokymia is closely associated with stress, fatigue, lack of sleep and too much caffeine.”
That’s doctorese for, “you’re eyelid’s twitching, moron. Try changing something.”
This doctor says that myokymia is associated with “brainstem neoplasms,” which sounds even cooler than “tremors.” “Brainstem neoplasms” is bound to get people at the office to pay attention when you talk about your problem. But then, the treatment for that includes a “lumbar puncture with examination of cerebrospinal fluid,” so maybe it’s best not to milk the neoplasm idea too far. Especially for a stupid eyelid twitch.
Frankly, when I get The Twitch, I’m not usually stressed out, I am getting as much sleep as ever, sometimes more, and I don’t drink coffee (I even have decaf Coke). Maybe it’s my Evil Plan to Dominate the World, we usually get eye twitches when we do that.
Some people stand by the theory that it is a vitamin deficiency, usually potassium (because someone once heard that potassium has something to do with muscles; we’re still trying to track that one down), and others swear that it’s a B-vitamin deficiency, saying they lose the twitch immediately when they start taking the pills. I have the strong feeling, however, that this is more to do with something that rhymes with the “flacebo effect.” For all of you who want the above remedies to work, I cleverly disguised my opinions about it there.
Treatment: Reduce your stress, get more sleep, nix the coffee, eat more bananas and B-complex pills. Throw in a couple of sugar pills for good measure. Save the cerebrospinal fluid exam for emergencies.
Or, you might just wait for them to go away on their own. Whatever.

OK – I am so glad to find this site. My eye (right upper) started twitching about 2 weeks ago. It mostly twitches when I sneeze. I know that sounds wierd and I am convinced I have a brain tumor (but I always think everything is a brain tumor.) I also have a little bit of a headache around my eyes. Had an xray of my sinuses today, and nothing showed up. I drink a ton of coffee and I’m totally stressed. I take fioricet for my headaches (which has caffeine). Wow, I really sound wired!!! I’m trying eyedrops for dry eyes, cutting out some of the coffee and I’m starting to meditate again (also some vitamins). Hopefully, something will work. Anyone ever have sneezing bring on the twitch? Would love to know. Thanks.
Hey everyone, I’ve been so depressed lately with this eye twitch. Mine is the lower left lid. I’m so glad to see so many other ppl have the same problem (although I wish we could all find a quick cure). But hear this interesting tid bit: As I’m sitting here reading everyone’s responses, I’ve had a cloth with a block of ice in it held to my eye. 10 minutes lately, voila, the twitch is gone! I’m sure it will come back (i’ve had it for about 3 months on and off) even temporarily I’m relieved:) Please give that a try. Good luck!
Boy, what a relief to know that I am not alone. My lower right eye has been twitching off and on for several days now. It is driving me nuts. I guess it is normal to think that it is something serious, like a brain tumor, etc. Glad to know that it so common. I am convinced now that it has a lot to do with lack of sleep and stress. Just got back from a long business trip, so was very tired and stressed when this started. Looking forward to the twitching subsiding soon!
I’m twitchy as well. I might as well join the ETC. It’s been on and off for a week now, lower left eyelid.
Stats: Right handed, left eye. Allergies to dust and cats and grass and hay and stuff. High stress- nursing student, full time crisis worker, single parent. Vitamins a few times a week, exercise about the same. Coffee daily generally, but only one “12-ounce-non-fat-double-shot-latte”, and no soda. No fast food. Good amounts of fiber.
I’d love to blame the twitch on the housemate that I’m growing to dislike very much- would that be unreasonable???
Hi again –
This is for Maggie Smith who posted on Aug. 22 2005. I have the same exact symptoms as you. If I sneeze, stretch or yawn — eye twitch!!! I’m convinced that et is stress-related, even those who say they are not stressed out. Sometimes issues can be “subconsciously” bothering us and we don’t even realize it.
Hello fellow twitchers,
I can’t believe I found a group of us! I have had a twitch of my lower left eye for almost 1 month now. I have had the problem in the past, but it would last a few hours or so and then go away. This is the first time it has stuck around. I gave up wearing my contacts and wear my glasses all the time now. It pretty much blocks the twitching area from the view of others.
I started taking magnesium 2 days ago, after doing some research on potential causes. I seem to have alot of the symptoms of a magnesium deficiency…including the twitching eye thing. I don’t know how long it takes to see if that is the problem…but this morning I ran for the mirror and my eye was still!! Not a twitch! And then…right before my eyes…little by little…it started up. Darn! And..it’s still going strong a few hours later. I am guessing that it could take a few weeks to see a change..if magnesium is the problem. And if not..then I don’t know what to do.
I do have benign MS…that could be a cause. I just don’t want to end up having botox injected, as a last resort. I have been trying to get more sleep and only drink 1 cup of coffee/day.
Well..the good thing is that I got new glasses a few months ago…so at least I am not forced to wear my very old and very ugly pair.
I’ll keep you all informed of my success with the supplement.
Bonnie
This is craziness! Anyway, I am the newest member with a right eye twitch and occasionally, a left eye twitch. It started around a week ago during my exams and now, almost everyday. From what I gather,
1. I hate caffeine.So, that’s not the prob.
2. I don’t drink alchohol…
3. I don’t think I have stress (who knows?)
4. I certainly don’t have lack of sleep. I love sleep…
What’s da prob?
Worried,
RightEyeTwitcher
Hi all,
I also have a twitching eyelid! It’s comforting to see
that I’m not alone. Mine is quite intermittent though.
I first remember it happening back around 2000. My upper
left eyelid twitched several times a day, and this went
on for several weeks. Then at some point it stopped. I
don’t remember getting it again until just recently…a
couple weeks ago maybe. Now it’s the same thing again…
my upper left eyelid twitches several times a day. I was
thinking it could be related to stress and/or fatigue, but
the thing is, there have been plenty of other times in my
life when I’ve been stressed and fatigued, and have NOT
had a twitching eyelid! I suppose I’ll try getting more
sleep and taking more vitamins and see if that helps.
Hi All —
It’s so comforting to find you! I have a question: does anyone also have nose twitches? (No bewitched way!) I couldn’t read all the msgs onsite but didn’t see this mentioned. It’s up near the bridge of my nose and very bothersome. It’s alot more frequent than my left eye twitching, and there’s tension -aching- in my left cheek. I hold the bridge of my nose when it starts twitching, and the containment and warmth of that helps. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. And if there’s enough, could we open the possibility of an eye and nose twitching club? That would punnily make it the ent club. . . blessings!

My eye twitching began about a month ago now and it’s intermittent about 2-3 times a day for 5 seconds about 4 times a week.
It seems to happen less when i don’t use the computer or play video games.
I do drink coca cola a lot but this hasn’t changed and I never had this problem before.
I’m 20 and I have had an occasional twitch maybe once a year every 3 years or so this is not accurate but this is the first time I’ve ever had an almost everyday right eye twitch. It is noticeable to me but not other people unless I tell them.
The twitch first started after a stressful couple days but it’s kept coming on and I haven’t been stressed for a couple of weeks now.
It’s happening less now so that’s a good thing.
It also seems to me the more I think about my eye twitching the more it happens so I think it may be somethign that i cause tohappen in a way.
I’m going to try eating bananas because I haven’t eaten one in about 5 years.
Greetings from Ireland!
My left eyelid began twitching a week ago today.
I had just recovered from a cold, so I assumed the twitching was related to that. Interestingly, I also wear contacts, and I noticed that the my left lens was clouding up.
I happened to visit my optician for a check up the day after the twitching started – he noted that my left eye was very dry and that underside of the eyelid seemed a little red. (I don’t think doctors are alert to those type of changes, incidentally). Anyway, the optician suggested I stop wearing the lens until the eye recovered.
The twitching is so irritating – every hour or so it happens out of the blue – but I think maybe it is slowly starting to become less severe. It doesn’t happen when my eyes are closed, so I can totally relate to various suggestions about wearing an eye patch. I’m no Daryl Hannah, but if it doesn’t get beeter, desperate measures will be called for!
Like so many other members of this Club, I spend 10 hours a day in front of the computer – I am a working mum in a fairly streeful job, but I actually eat well and don’t drink coffee. I also work in an air conditioned office, so it can be quite drying on the eyes. Mind you – at 46 years of age, I have never exercised in my life, so maybe that is finally staring to catch up with me!
Twitching definitely seems to be a condition related to dry eyes, anyway. I recommend lots of tlc for fellow sufferers, a cool eye mask and a lie down for 10 minutes or so every day (slices of cucumber are a suitable alternative) and try to relax.
Best of luck to everyone.
I’ve been able to relate my twitching to high blood pressure. Though I’m now taking a stiff 20Mg of B.P medicine, that’s not going to stop me from going to get my BP checked at the E/R. I might just, by chance, run in to that cute MD; Hopefully she won’t check for a Bleeding Ulcer this time around (A Female Latex index Finger is a big turn off)
I can confirm B-vitamins have nothing to do with curing eye twitching. On the contrary, I suspect them to be an underling reason for it. Three weeks ago I had an episode of herniated disk, and, as the standard treatment requires in such a case, I was taking greater doses of Vit B1, B6, and B12. This time (unlike the first crisis in February this year) I dropped the NSAIDs. So, my treatment consisted of taking vitamins and rest till the nerve swell passes. Fortunately, it did pass, but an eye twitching (upper eyelid, left eye) appeared (for first time). I stopped the Vitamims immeadiately (the dosage is really excessive in “Milgamma N” caps.) and slowly the eye twitching disappeared.
It came back again just yesterday without any obvious reason. Usually, I am a heavy coffee drinker, but for months I have been drinking mostly decaf to lower stress \the herniated disk scared me a lot\ and for 4 months I was in anti-carb diet in order to lower body weight \thus, hopefully, lower the pressure on the verterbra\.
Well, the anti-carb diet helped me not, the vitamins helped me in a way I cannot figure out, the disk is still herniated, BUT I have an eye twitching as an extra :))

Hola Amigos
I have a lower left eye twitch that has bother me for years. It’s seems to be more often when I am stressed. It tends to go away for a while and then comes back and gives me grief for days non stop every couple of second. I think it stops when I sleep as I have no problem sleeping. It’s good to have found this site as at least now I know that I am not alone in this and strangely anough after reading many comments it has stopped annoying me after I read the comments. maybe it’s a virus of some sort. oh and I can relate to the person that gets the twitching across the nose bridge
I hope some people can suggest fixes for the twitches.
like the cold patch some one suggested
Regards
Chico
It’s reassuring to see that so many others have the same quirky symptom. My mother was rushed to the hospital 3 months ago, and ever since that day, my left upper eyelid has been twitching daily. I get lots of sleep and never have caffeine, so it must be stress, but my mom’s doing well now and the twitch won’t leave! I have an incidental doctor’s appointment tonight, so I’m going to ask him about it. If there are any worthwhile recommendations, I’ll come back tomorrow!
I’m only 16 and I have lower left eye twitches. It bugs the heck out of me. Half the time I’m under stress and the other half I’m not under stress. When I’m talking to my friends and it happens it’s like I’m sensitive to light a tad bit. I love my life. I’ve joined many things and have very little time for me. I put other people priorities before mine. I help many and for those that don’t take charge I usually due to get the job done. But I’ll try eating the banana thing and if that doesn’t work well then I’m going to half to live with it.
strange a world populatiom getting taken over by eye twitching, ive been getting it for the past 3 weeks every couple of hours, how annoying is it grrr, not stress with me though as i meditate twice a day and use plenty of relaxation techniques , also diet, im t total, vegan and take plenty of vitamins ,i think the underlying cause is in front of our eyes (hahaha) maybe its to do with sitting at a computer screen that maybe the underlying cause, we wernt born with pc in front of us and well all the use of them maybe causing a world overload of twitchers.lol.xx
This is like slow torture treatment!!!!! It’s just annoying enough to make you go looney.
Has anyone ever noticed that when you stare at your eye in the mirror it stops???? And, starts again when you walk away? Oh yeah, drinking wine makes it go away also although this is not recommended while at work (unless of course you work from home like moi!)

im 17 years old and im think im going to stab myself in the eye it just annoys me if anyone knows anything about cutting eyelids off tell me and if it will stop the twitching i mean who needs eyelids right
Thanks for all your contributions. It’s nice to know I’m not the only one out here with twichy eyelid. Funny, the twitch seem to have gone since I started reading all these comments. Maybe I just needed to know there are others out there. Good luck to all the twitchers out there.
Great web site
I have a lower left eye twitch that is driving me insane! This is the first time the lower lid has twitched. Usually it is the upper one. I wonder if people notice. It happens every few minutes and lasts a few seconds each time. The crazy thing is that as long as I look in the mirror, it won’t happen. Ever! This has been going on for about three weeks now. Here it goes again. Crap!
My upper right eyelid has been twitching about 85% of the time i spend awake fore the past two months now. I’m a college student, so stress is there, but this just recently started to happen, and i’ve been a student for some time now. it seems to be getting worse. i usually end up grabbing my eyelid with my fingers to try and get it to stop… people think i’m crazy. dear god i hope this eyelid twitch goes away, as of right now i fear i will have it for ever!
hi, my right eyelid started twitching when i was tired a few months ago and it usually went away with a good nites sleep, but for the last 5 days its been constant,i havent had much sleep so i will try sleeping and im going to eat alot of bannanas.this twitch is bugging the hell out of me.
After about a month of twitching (mostly when I sneezed or yawned) it just stopped! I still don’t sleep enough and still guzzle coffee like there’s no tomorrow — but it just stopped. So that’s the good news. It’s probably just a spasm related to who knows what? It doesn’t seem serious at all – just annoying. SO fellow twitchers – I hope that is of some comfort to you.
I can not BELIEVE the amount of people with the problem I’m having! Upper left eye lid, for about 4 weeks now, driving me crazy! (Weird how mostly with everyone it’s the upper left, eh?) When it started I thought it was that I needed new contacts. Didn’t help. What I really think it is is too much focusing on a computer screen. Or when I read a book. Those are the times it REALLY goes crazy. Which is horrible because I need to use the computer for hours for work, have done that for years now. And I love to read for pleasure. Aaargh! Tried hot compresses, ice, nothing helps. Except closing them.
Well I might as well chime in!
My lower left eyelid has been twitching for 18 days now. The only time it stops is right after I’ve washed my face with a facial scrub – I suspect it’s only because I have the muscles around my eyes constricted – but then less than a minute later, it’s back.
I first suspected it was caffeine related, because I went on some kind of Pepsi bender. Eliminated that, and the twitch remains. I get plenty of sleep, and my stress levels are what they normally are, and I’ve never experienced an eye twitch because of it.
A lot of people here sound like their eye twitch is a minor inconvenience.. more annoying than anything else. Mine is visible from a distance of about 2 feet. When I saw a professional about it recently, she stared at it, then said “you poor thing,” as she placed her fingers on it to see if it was twitching as hard as it looked. It was.
My doctor put me on a new supplement called Cerefolin, and it was like days later when the twitching began. I suspected the medicine and stopped taking it for a few days. The twitch remains. It could be that I didn’t stop taking it for long enough, perhaps I’ll give that another try. He is giving me this medication to see if we can replace my monthly B12 shots with it. Perhaps that’s part of the problem, also. I was supposed to see an opthalmologist but they all said there’s nothing they can do.
I have some kind of nerve damage on my left side somewhere (I really need to find out what the results of my nerve study test were), and it gets painful at times, but I’ve had it for almost 3 years – no eye twitch until now. But in all fairness, I DO have soreness in my neck, and have wondered if that isn’t causing some of the problem.
If I end up finding some type of relief, I’ll make sure to come back here and post a follow-up.
yes folks we are human this is what happens to us when we dont look after ourselfs it is a way of saying slow down take some regular exercise and eat healthy it will even make the dog happy so there you go folks good luck and Happy xmas and new year.
Yay! At least here I can state what it going on. I tried telling my family about my eye twitch and they dont think it is a big deal. But my left eye-upper left corner has been twitching for a few weeks. Some days it doesnt but today it does this little dance every couple minutes for the last hour. I am already legally blind in that eye so it’s not that big of a deal I guess. It is just so darn annoying feeling that little vibration dance there. I dont think it is diet related. I am forced to eat right because I have an eating disorder history. And I get plenty of sleep because I am on disability and I don’t have to work. I am under some stress but my whole life has been full of stress so I dont know why my eye waited so long to be on the move. Just one more odd thing about my body I guess. Well good to know I am not a total freak.
TWITCHHHH!!!!!!!!! crap, it’s driving me nuts. I have had an under the eye twitch for about 2 weeks now, it’s totally the vein pulsing with my heartbeat. I swear, if it doesn’t stop, I am going to cut my eye out. My boyfriend said that it would be hot for me to wear an eyepatch anyway. I would say that stress is the problem, but I have been under stress for the last year…husband leaving me and my son for a 20 year old, moving from sunny FL to IL to go back to school, being flippin poor from all the debt I was in before…classes, cleaning the house, work..blah blah blah!!!!! I just want it to stop!!!!!! I’m 26 and I just want to be able to walk down the street and not squint to cover up the throbbing eye that wants to pop out at everybody it looks at!!!!!
Lovely site btw, it makes me feel like less of a freak to see that I’m not the only one with this problem!
kisses to all fellow Twitchers!

ps….is there an answer?? cold spoon? hot water?
Hello, there!
My name is Leslie, and I’m a twitcher. Yep, a twitcher. My left upper eyelid has been going about every 30-60 seconds, lasting up to 5 seconds, every day for the past two weeks (possibly more; not positive). It is the far left area of the lid, just below the brow bone. I have looked in a mirror when it’s happening and cannot really see a noticable difference in appearance when it’s happening, though, to me, it feels awful. There are times when I actually get a ‘tension’ type of ache behind the left eye, and often end up closing the eye and holding it closed with my palm to relieve some of the tension.
Me/My Lifestyle:
* I am 28 years old
* I have two jobs; one of them with a VERY high stress level (have had this job since September)
* I have not been getting much sleep in the past month
* I have just recently begun taking a standard vitamin
* I do not have a healthy diet, but I am a healthy weight
* I do not wear contacts or glasses
* I spend lots of my free time on the computer
* I have allergies/asthma and live in a moist climate
I wish I knew what was causing this. I feel for those of you who have had this for years, because it’s driving me crazy, veeeeery slowly.
Twitchers Unite!
Hoooray! I posted a comment on Nov. 1. My right eyelid was twitching like crazy and driving me nuts. Well, good news is it has stopped. It has been over a week now and no eye twitch!!! Bad news is I have no idea why it stopped but, heck, Im not going to complain. It feels good to have quiet and subdued lids again… Hope it stops for all of you too, guess no martians are going to land on my doorstep after all hahahaha
English is second languge to me so i want to write down simplly and shortly and I will try my best for explain how i treat my eye twiching.EYE TWICHING is big ploblem to me and i thing to all of you.First i did check with eye doctor they spend 2-3 hours to test but they said nothing wrong.I am not drink cuffee, not smoke, sleep well.
After,I try acupuncture with oriental doctor.first visit 50% off,2nd time treat 80% gone,twice a week.
Still not 100% gone but much beter,i am still looking for the reason.
(Is there hope for my right twitching eye yet?)
I hope I can find out thru all these postings why my eye is twitching. I drink one cup of coffee per day, sometimes never. I get more than 8 hrs a sleep a day, and I am not stressed out. I think it’s because I am straining my eyes because I need glasses. I live in a smaller centre and well I hope I can get in to see him before the next Xmas…LOL.
Oh yeah I just massaged my eyelid, and it’s still twitching…My eyelashes look wild when they twitch too, so if I am at work and my right eye starts twitching maybe the customer thinks I am flirting with them…HELP!
Just found this
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lindane
which is a possible (though hopefully an unlikely) cause.
Steve
YAY!!! It stopped! No eyepatch for me!! I started taking a vitamin and drinkin less soda, so maybe that was the answer. My boyfriend said that the nerve just died. Haha…someone must of got on my last nerve!!!
I’m sure I’ll be back…I’ve got 2 eyes
hello fellow twitchers, I have only had my twitch for about 4 days and i think it will drive crazier than i already am if it doesn’t stop soon. I don’t know how those of you who have had it for years have dealt with it for so long without having to be committed. I am usually a complete hypochondriac so i am very glad to have found this sight to know how common it is. Otherwise my mind usually goes straight to brain tumor as the cause of anything. LOL Thank God for all the other twitchers of the world for we have all united. :)Now how about that world domination plot that was hatched at the beginning of the message board!
I think we may have a shot at it.
Twitching and proud,
Stacy
I had a stressful, stressful episode two months back in Paris and my eyes began to twitch, which I took as a message from my body to GET OUT OF THIS. Its been two months, and I work a new job from home, so I get plenty of sleep, eat well, more exercise.. but the damn thing won’t stop twitching in my lower left eyelid.
Just to give an international twist to your site, the French have a different advice just to be different from the American potassium camp. ‘YOU NEED MORE MAGNESIUM! EAT DARK CHOCOLATE!’
So, there you go. The medical advice you always wanted hear except this time its not from a guest on Oprah Winfrey.
I bet someone from the chocolate industry spread this rumor.
good morning to all, (left eye twitcher)
hey, I will say that our annoying eye twitch may be two things. Mine is a very stressful marriage and the start of a new job 2 months ago. Lets factor not having enough money; never. As well as wanting things to change that just want. Two stepchildren who are teen age girls, a wife who has her on agenda, a son who acts as if he was still 2 instead of 8. I have a 12 year old daughter who is awesome in school and out. So why does my left eye act as if he was in the movie Dirty Dancing, Saturday Night Fever, Blues Brothers, or on stage with James Brown and Prince I don’t know. But i will say the first thing that I mentioned is marriage.
You must change your life style and outlook, but understand that the eye is always going to twitch there is no cure it will come and go i have dealt with it for 5 long years along, stress, depression, and anxiety also with the urge to WANT TO [edited for questionable content]. (just kidding) Laughter will also help in relaxing the facial muscles.
God Bless the twitchers
I just found this site which is run by a Vision Therapist I’ve seen myself, talking about the involuntary eyelid twitching and its causes and possible remedies:
http://www.visionworksusa.com/blepharospasm.htm
I’ve had those twitches too, from time to time…mine always go away eventually.
Good luck to all you eye twitchers.
Barbara
Lots of comments. We are going for the viral or environmental cause. Joe found this site because his eye has been twitching (lower right eye) for some time. He pulled his lid down for several seconds and it stopped. His wife (me) has had eye twitching in the past, but never enough to be a problem. However, why we are contributing to this blog is that I had an eye twitch (left lower) a couple of days ago a couple of days ago. He has been scraping paint, but that doesn’t explain mine.
Joe tells me to not spell quiver with two ‘v’s’ Apparently some really strange stuff happens in Google.
History: I have had eye twitches before, but I usually put them down to stress and they never were irritatingly long. Joe has had them too, but neither of us remember how frequently or how long ago. We are both senior citizens.
Therefore, it can’t be anything serious (since we have both lived so long) for those of you who are concerned. The phenomenon probably has more than one cause – stress being a major one.
IMHO, it has nothing to do with the comment that was replaced with asterisks since we are only senior citizens, not insensate.

I might get a pirate eye patch. I’m going crazy and the only relief I get is when I close my twitching eye. I pratice driving, walking, working, etc with my left eye closed and it still TWITCHES but it doesn’t bother me nearly as much. When I try to get my fiance to see my problem so she (twitch, twitch … damn – it’s going again)can notice and care, it always stops and she can never see it. I just showed her and it stopped before she could see. for reference, I’m 37, male, high stress computer job, min coffee, workout some, just got engaged and stressed about the cost of the wedding! Good freakin’ luck all fellow TWITCHES!!!
Yedp> I’m another twitcher. Seems like a get some kind of twitch yearly, usually underneath the eye.
This year I have the twitch in the upper eyelid for about 6 weeks now. I’m really ticked off. Remember Inspector Clouseauu’s boss in the movie, The Pink Panther? Thats what I see when I look in the mirror. Its bad enough putting up with a variety of middleage ailments. Now nature has to add insult to injury by gibving me a frigging eye twitch.
Dang, whqats next? Incontinence?

My Lower left eyelid has been twitching for the past 6 days. My tremors last about 20 seconds, and it happens about 2-5 times every hour. I Sleep well, and I’m not under alot of stress, I don’t need glasses, but, I do drink between 3-6 cans of pop a day. However, I’ve started drinking pop 20 plus years ago, why does the twitching start when I hit 30?
Now, A week before the twitching occured, I can recall when I got poked in that same eye, which made my eye wet, and moist all day. Can this have anything to do with the twitching?
One month!! I can hardly take it. I’ve been to the neurologist who gave me a rx for Klonipin (anxiety med).. I went to the eye doctor who said the same stuff about caffeine stress and sleep.. He did mention botox but that would be a couple hundred dollars. I’m begining to worry about all these neuro problems ie. ALS etc… I do have random muscle twictching sometimes in my legs and arms but that is normal right? I’m so stressed about all the things it can be I’m probably just making it worse. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.. I need help!!!
Andrea … twitchoholic
My lower right eyelid has been spazzing out constantly for over a solid week now. I’ve had the occasional muscle spasm, but this guy is going off! I feel like a freak show; it is totally embarrassing because I feel shady, like I’m hiding something from people. I exercise, stay positive, and eat well. Okay, so caffeine is an important part of my morning. Besides that, I do not know what to change. The only stress I acknowledge in my life now is this obnoxious eyelid twitch!!!! Thanks for having a site that validates my frustration.
My twitch finally went away on its own after 3 months!
Can people who do get good results, please write back about what they tried?
Very good to have this resource for informal study!
Did anyone find that wearing an eyepatch helped? Less time on the computer?
Upper right twitch, now seems to have become a lower right twitch.
Started after a 3-day trip across the US and back, so some jet lag and extra stress.
It has been about 3 weeks now.
Stress, and maybe dry eye factors.
I AM GOING TO TRY:
More moisture:
open bedroom window at night (we have winter dry heat now),
use eye drops.
Will also take:
calcium and magnesium, (good for women anyway), and
potassium.
Note:
for those cutting back on Caffeine, try various teas, even black tea at ordinary strength, is less stressful than coffee; Decaffeinated coffee is not good for you for various reasons, including the reason of possibly causing increased bad cholesterol as shown in a recent US study,
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/4444908.stm.
I used to think that my occasional eyelid twitching started after eating a lot of oranges, (sugar related?)
Could also be due to the lenses of my glasses being out of skew.
I had this problem for two months last year… almost non-stop twitching. I was going crazy. Desperate for a cure I scoured the internet. One person mentioned fasting. I did not want to do that but after vitamins, eye drops et. al. I figured it was worth a shot. I went by the local health food store and perused the literature on various fasting/juicing diets. I settled on a simple one called the Master Cleanser. It is totally insane … you drink this lemonade made from special high grade maple syrup cayenne and lemon juice … it is pretty revolting stuff … but by day three the twitch subsided … day four it disappeared … I followed the fast for the full 10 days which is even harder than it sounds … although you are taking in about 1500 calories a day from the gross lemonade. Once you are done solid food tastes so good … by day 5 food is all I could think about … anyway I am sure this is not for everyone but it worked for me. Maybe it was just placebo but nothing else I tried made a dent in the twitch. HTH

Well, I’ve been twitching for almost a month now. I thought it was from a serious sinus infection that was effecting my nasal cavaties as well. Well I’m over the infection and still the twitching. I eat very healthy, natural and organic foods. I don’t drink cokes or caffeine very often, but I have been craving tomotaoes with tons of salt and dark chocolate. I don’t like chocolate, it gets me all mucusy. YUCK, but i’ve been indudlging. I do have finals coming up, maybe it is stress. Drives me crazy though!
Feel like I’ve been to a 12 step meeting for twitchers. I too googled and found this site. I do that every time I start getting jiggy with my eye. I am a RIGHT UNDER EYE TWITCHER this time. There have been times they have been going at the same time. I think it is stress, not enough water, too much coffee and using creamer (I just read that somewhere).
It is the end of a stressful year at work, I am planning my wedding and the twitch has come back in a subtle under eye “flutter” which I disguise by wearing real thick frame glasses. I thought of the eye patch thing too, but… no.
I have tried muscle relaxers, epsom salt baths, having a doctor inject novocaine into my under eye area, acupuncture, and a few other things.
KLONOPIN is the thing that seems to take them away. Plus it helps you sleep real good!
This time, though, I am opting to take extra time off over the holidays and relax, sleep in, exercise, and take care of myself. I also SIT IN FRONT of a computer for about 9 hours a day. I don’t think that helps.
Much love to all my twitching buddies out there!
Good luck and get some klonpin. Your twitches will be under control in 24-48 hours.
Hello twitchers.
I am a former twitcher…I posted a couple of comments quite a few months ago. I haven’t twitched now for quite some time. However, the area where I used to twitch (lower eyelid) is now permanently puffy, with a slight dark discoloration. Has anyone else noticed this type of thing?
I suppose it could be a coincidence, but I don’t think so.
Thanks,
Annie
I have had left eye twitching for almost a year. It started when I stopped working to take care of my two boys at home. My three year old is a trouble maker and my eight year old is mildly autistic. I also home school and sit behind a computer for hours. Talk about stress! I have tried vitamins, vitamin water with potassium, and vegetables. My doctor sent me for an eye check up, and I wear glasses now. Nothing seems to work for me. Maybe im allergic to my kids. ( just kidding) In my case if I go back to work maybe my eye won’t twitch. This twitching is annoying and its really fast. I guess its comforting to know Im not alone. Good Luck to all fellow eye twitchers out there.
Im so annoyed. This eyelid twitching, left eye started a month and a half ago. I got a CT of the Brain with contrast medium. It showed nothing.
Just my luck, the day of the CT the twitching STOPPED. I was so happy. Stopped for 3 weeks. It came back lastnight
I am so peeved off. I must have multiple sclerosis. I am 23 yrs old.
Depressed and peeved,
Emily
Emily:
I hope you didn’t get the CT scan just for the eyelid twitching! Nor that you thing you’ve got MS just because of the twitching either. It just happens, is all. Me, I started getting it again the past two days when I’m going to sleep at night. Sometimes it’s just the one day, sometimes it stretches on for weeks. It’s just one of those things. Don’t worry about it, and it’ll probably go away even faster.
Wow, I had no idea there were this many fellow twitchers. My upper left eye lid has been twitching for about 2-3 months now and thought I would try to reasearch this irritating condition. I was sure that I was dying from some kinda brain tumour or something ^__^….doesn’t sound like it now. Maybe I need to cut back on the pot of green tea I drink a day. LOL I will let you know if that works. o.O It is rather strange that most of the
twitching comes from the upper left eye lid….hmmm.
Ah, well, I guess I will be heading over to CVS now to buy B6, D and manganese supplements. I’m sorry, I lied. I’ll end up going to Rite Aide.
I have gotten twitching anywhere from my lower eyelids (one or both) to my eyebrows (one or both, sometimes in concert with the eyelids, sometimes now) since I was senior in high school. I have had both eyebrows jumping since Tuesday (it’s Saturday) I have a pretty constant level of self-induced stress (I tend to overthink things, to put it simply), but I think that my decision on Tuesday to start pounding coffee all day at work caused the twitching. That, and I have started running five miles on the t-mill every other day. So I probably have that calcium/sodium imbalance as my new exercise has caused my body to lose its ability to balance itself. I have never been in athletic shape (though I’ve never been fat); my goal is to get into athletic shape. I’m a 26-year-old white male, btw.
I have only read about half of the entries on this list, but has our site moderator thought that there are so many of us that we could really learn more about this if we got some numbers on how many of us are stressed, how many of us have experience life changes, how many of us drown ourselves in caffeine, etc? Maybe a web-based suvey?
Oh I’ve also been eating less and weirder…random snacks (lots of pistachios, actually) and more eggs than normal.
Bottom line: I’m friggin ecstatic that I am not alone. As I converse with people at my friend’s office Xmas party tonight and see their eyes dart to my eyebrows as they twitch in HUUUUUGE strokes, I will be comforted by the thought that others are going through the same thing too.
Much love
D
I don’t know why you guys hate it so much. I’ve been having this eye lid twitch thing for about 4 years now, and I’ve simply come to enjoy it. The twitches occur only at irregular 4 hour intervals, so when they come around, I relish my time with them.
Its quite enjoyable to look at it twitch in a mirror, or get someone else to press their finger against your eyelid whilst it spasms. Its quite funny!
Anyway, happy twitching twitchers!
I guess I will have to join the club. My left upper eye lid
has been twitching frequently for a couple of months now. I did not read all of the messages above, but I read many and it seemed to me that the vast majority of the twitchers are the left eye lids. Hmm? Some body a lot smarter than I am may be able to make a scientific correlation about that.. left brain vs right brain people, maybe? Who knows. I will try some of the remedies cited above.
Your page still rates the highest on google, and if you ask me, it’s for good reason: Yours is probably the only honest and unbiased survey of this apparently common but (let’s face it, pardon the pun) frightening condition. I think your advice is solid and true and I have started myself immediately on a stringent diet of 250mg sugar pills four times a day, taken with a shot or two of rye, just for the stress y’understand. My eye still flutters like a half-burned Old Glory ina hurricane, but it don’ bothr me so mushh.
Also, thanks for this page and this chance for everyone to comment. By Jimney Krickets, when I start up my “Eye Tremorists’ Weekly” I’m making a b-line straight here to scrape up the charter subscribers!
gerrrrrrrr its really annoying, especially when you cant see it, but feel it. (Well actually seeing it twitch would be scary!)
My mom always said left meant good luck and right…i dunno. For me its the right, hope that doesn’t mean bad luck! :/
Oh I have yoga class tonight, if it is stress related, maybe yoga will help!
My upper left eyelid started twitching about a month ago, it’s pretty annoying but it only happens about 3 times a week now. I drink at least 4 cups of coffee a day, don’t excercise much, and have a horrible diet, but I’m almost positive it’s caffine related. The last couple times I got it was about 2-3 hours after slamming a Mountain Dew. I also have a very high stress job. About 13 years ago I was diagnosed with epilepsy (haven’t had a siezure in about 7 years) so I asked my neuroligist if this was related. He said no and told me to stop drinking so much caffine and start taking vitamins.
Well,
I am here to share my story, starting about two months ago.
It started about once a day, in my left eye, for a few seconds, and increased to every hour for minutes, and when I was really tired, it was simply continuous.
I had no special stress when it started, just the ususal work-family, so I went to a neurologist who said everything is normal, and that it is probably due to stress.
However, I suddenly thought that I quit drinking coca-cola, just a month before it happend (switched to sprite…) and when I got back to drinking some coke, it *vanished*, totally!
I saw some posts talking about coke as a cause to the problem, but has anyone noticed it might improve the situation?
Mike
WOW,
I thought i was going nuts until I found this site. It’s funny because I drink mad amounts of caffine!! J/K
It’s final’s time and I’ve been stressed out studying… I still get PLENTY of sleep, so my upper left eye lid has been going nuts. I thought it meant that someone is talking me, but then I guess it’s stress related.
HAHA, ETC club for life!
Hello fellow eye twitchers. I’m so glad I found this site, it’s great. My right eye has been twitching since Thanksgiving Day so exactly 3 weeks now. It started out mild but the past day or so, I seem to have it about every 1/2 hour during the day, especially at work. I agree with the people here about dry air in the winter and especially working on the computer all day, I think that probably has something to do with it. I am going to look into getting more calcium, magnesium and potassium. Do some of you wonder while you are talking to someone if they can see it? I wonder that but I doubt if it is very noticable to others. I hope not. (LOL)
i have an upper left eye twitch too! im going out of my mind trying to get rid of it! the last time i had it was in the winter, so maybe the weather does have something to do with it.
I’ve had twitches on and off for about 10 years now but for the last 3 months the upper left hasn’t stopped twitching.
If I close my eyes tight, yawn or sneeze I get upper AND lower on BOTH sides going all at once every time. Only the upper left continues after a few seconds though, wierd!
It seems to me there is no definable cause. I have no stress that bothers me, and on the rare occasions I do the twitching doesn’t get worse or better, it just stays the same.
I don’t touch caffeine and don’t smoke or even drink much alcohol. I also had twitching before I ever used a computer.
I’ve tried potassium, magnesium, water, multi-vitamins, none of which made any difference – I do have a fairly balanced diet anyway.
No-one else in my family suffers from it either.
I guess Botox is the only true cure but it seems a bit like brute force to me and is only a temporary fix.
Like some have mentioned above, I’ve just learnt to live with it. Great site though, happy twitching!
Hey Mike, re: the Coke… I would guess that Coke might be addictive, since it has loads of caffiene and sugar in it. Maybe the twitching was a symptom of withdrawl? Just an idea. I can’t see how anything in Coke could possibly be good for you!
My story – I started on a really strict eating plan in February. Fell right off a couple of weeks ago and I have been eating terribly. I don’t like my job, and am not sleeping enough. Started drinking coffee with sugar in it… terrible. So I’ve been twitchy all week! Maybe longer, I’m not sure. Once I’m off work I will be getting a pass to the gym and going to the health food store.
I get twitches every so often, but this has been the most persistant twitch so far. It’s amazing what your body will tell you if you listen to it, mine is saying ‘eat right exercise quit smoking’ incessantly… I will!!
I’m a teacher and I just thought that my high school seniors were getting to me. When it started, they were out of control. However, I am now on Christmas break and my lower right eyelid is STILL TWITCHING! I’ve been getting sleep, my shopping is done, and I’ve been drinking Fresca. I just wish it would end. I’ve been joking that it is a brain tumor, but I think I will just try the vitamins – okay probably not – I’ll try the bananas, because I am going bananas (and there it goes again…twitch…twitch..twitch…)
Thanks everyone!
Two weeks ago we had our family photos made. Trying to remember how to smile so my smile doesn’t look crooked, now I have to worry with my eye. Only one picture out of 18 looked normal Thanks be to God!!!! I also have tried the south beach diet. I wonder if I do need more bananas and b-vit hummm. Im a stay at home mom of one homeschooled child. Maybe thats the stress. I twitch 10 of the 14 hours I’m awake. It started in my left and is now in my right. I’m thankful its not in both at the same time. I wonder if accupuncture would work?????? I think I will make a trip to the Health food store.
I have an upper right eye lid twitch. It has been going on for about 3 weeks now .I don’t drink alot of coffee am under some stress since it is the holidays, and get about 6 to seven hours of sleep a night. But I also take crestor for my cholesterol.that is a side effect of crestor.Something about your muscles. But the doctor always told me it just occurs in the leg and its pain.Any medical students out there,or medical personel that would know more abour crestor and eye twitching.Nice to have this sight and to know I’m not alone
this is truly annoying, bottom left eyelid constantly twitching like mad… must… solve…. this….! gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah
It came back :(…..stress from finals and having to let my ex borrow my son for a month….MAKE IT STOP!!!!
Stupid left eye lid has been twitching on and off all day for 2 days. grrrrr. What frightens me are the posts here that say they’ve had the problem for months or years. I’m definatly stressed, always, have been an insomniac since, god, forever it seems like, hehe. The twitch didn’t start till yesterday though. Probably has something to do with the computer. The night before I was on the computer from when I got home till late, I had worked all day (staring at a computer) and driven in 1 1/2 hours of traffic before. Probably something to do with staring at a computer, then tail lights, then computer again till I went to bed. eek, won’t do that again.
Hi everyone, I have to say I was worried when I noticed my right upper eye lid twitching about 4 days ago almost nonstop with a few breaks between. After reading some of your stories out there I am now really worried! I can’t imagine this going on for months or even worse, years! I am a maternity nurse and I am 6 mos. pregnant, I think it is related to the pregnancy (decreased potassium and or calcium), I do see women with Bell’s Palsy that is pregnancy related. I just hope that this stupid eye lid twitching isn’t a “tremor before the big one, Bell’s Palsy”! Has anyone heard of a connection of the two?
from a fellow ‘twitcher” with a sense of humor about it:
a twitch in time saves nine.
life’s a twitch, then you tarry one
elton john song: the twitch is back
husband to wife(or wife to husband): all you ever do is twitch, twitch, twitch.
etc. yes, you guessed it i am the victim of an unlucky upper lefter.
perhaps we can start a group: twitchanon
: )
Hey Shauna, I wouldn’t be too worried about the twitching. I got mine (right eye) on Thanksgiving day, thought it would never end (Posted on this site Dec. 16th). I am a very nervous person and type for a living all week at work. Anyway, my twitch stopped almost a week ago. So it lasted about 4 weeks or so. Maybe it will come back, who knows. But I’m glad it has stopped for now. Becky
It’s a little weird…most of you guys out there have the left eye twitching problem – For me, it’s the right eye and I can actually see the spasm as it moves across my upper lid. It is sooooo annoying and has been going on for 3 days. I’ve had it before on different areas of the eye. It comes and goes every couple of months.
I recently got over “pink eye” — correlation? maybe – maybe not. I also (poor, poor me) have “dry eye” and use drops for that at night. I wear glasses and contacts.
The spasms happen more when I remove the contacts.
Very, very strange huh?
Good luck to all — it is nice to know that I am not alone!
CJ
My right eye started twitching about a week ago and hasn’t stopped yet. I drink just one cup of coffee in the morning, get at least eight hours of sleep every night, and am not under a great deal of stress.
I’m going to see an eye doctor next week…I have never worn glasses, but wonder if I need them. My girlfriend is a doctor and thinks it might be eye strain that’s causing the annoying twitches.
It’s REALLY annoying. Happy New Year.
Interesting that males usually have the twitching in the left eye. Mine is in the left eye as well. It started about four months ago when I went on the graveyard shift. I have it at least a couple times a day. I drink coffee to stay awake at night. I also have a high stress job as a supervisor on a production line and work 5-6 days a week at 12.5 hrs a day. I wake up at least a couple times during a 6.5 hr sleep during the day. The twitching is annoying and I hope to be back on the normal shift soon…I guess if all I get is a twitching eye from all this I should consider myself lucky…
I’ve always found that when I get weird a twitch anywhere and try to show someone, it stops. So I’ve applied that logic to the incredibly annoying twitch at the left corner of my left eye. It’s just sort of a mind over matter thing. Stop what you’re doing – relax – let it stop.
This is the only relief I’ve managed since this started a month ago. Relief lasts 20 minutes or so and then the twitching resumes. There’s also a constant irritation in that eye, but I can never find a stray lash or anything.
Sometimes it gets really intense and a tiny muscle on the right side of my nose starts in as well. Then it’s like two parts of my face talking morse code to each other.
Aside from the banana a day, I have all the “risk factors” (who isn’t completely stressed out?). I also gulp a fistfull of heart pills every day and use lots of artificial sweetener. I was really hoping my google search would blame it on medication or Splenda®.
This blog is great! But what we really need is a survey with a zillion questions. Then run them all through the discombobulator…
Hi,
I have a left upper lid twitch, seems to worsen with chocolate. Don’t really know, I am going to try the water cure though. I also had broken blood vessels in the other eye and both eyes are always dry. Anyone see a connection there? Oh, twitch seems to worsen with vitamin C. Someone said vitamin A for dry eyes, didn’t try that yet… Thanks for the company, yes it helps, eye problems can give you panic attacks, and I am a worrier by nature anyway, thanks for letting me share..
I had eyelid twitching on my right eye for months and tried everything. I even went to the eye doc who seemed quite alarmed at the condition. Finally as a fluke I went to a chiropractor for some back and shoulder pain and mentioned it to him. He said, “Oh that is related to a specific vertebrae in your neck”. He checked it and low and behold that vertebrae was wacked out. He adjusted me and NO MORE TWITCHING! Now whenever it acts up again I just go in for an adjustment and it does the trick!
I had the eye twitch for a few weeks and can sympathize!
Try drinking TONIC WATER for a few days. A friend of mine (who is an MD) told me about it and it worked! The twitch is gone (perhaps, a coincidence, but it won’t hurt to try it)
I hope it helps!
Upper Left Eyelid Twitch, maybe it’s a result from all the drugs I used to do, anyone else have this issue?
We are just going to have to live with it… It could be worse… we could all be blind for gods sake!
Hi I am A right eye twitching over worked over stressed mother of three… well four if you count my husband. I have been twitching for 11 days now and it is making me crazy. You should see the stares I get from my clients. I am however thankful that it is just an annoying little twitch and I am not going blind or anything life altering. It is nice to know there are others out there and seeing how this is my first “battle of the twitching” I don’t have any tried and failed solutions. I do know that my life has been this way for at least the last 5 years and I have never had more than a twitch after exercising before. My solution to my twitch…. Pray.
Good Luck to all my fellow twitchers.
hi everyone!!!!it is great to know I am not the only loser!!!listen!!people who were complaning about their 3 days eye twitching I have a surprize for you:) Mine started 9 months ago and it is still with me go on and off.It is driving me crazy!!!!I am a resepsionist I have to talk milions of people everyday looking to their eyes. You know how it feels when it comes while I am talking the guests.I do not have stress problem at all until it comes. However when it starts I do have one!!!I have it and it is not leaving me alone…How about going a date with left upper twitcing eye lid?I dont wanna even talk :)) It is the one of the funniest and annoying eye problem ever:)

Hi. my name is Lindsay. I am 14 yrs old and i have a twitching disorder. I would like for you readers to read my post to see what i have had and goes on in my everyday life. I have had it for 6 yrs now. I can tell you that it sucks really bad. I dont like having it. Having people ask me all the time y do u do that, y do u blink so much. things like that. i dont like it. i juss try to ignore it and say i dont know. i had it two times. I was about 6 or 7 when i 1st got it. but then it stopped. i know that it is something u do when you start to fall asleep. Well my mom did it in her sleep and i did it. then when i tried to stop i couldnt. i dont know if it runs in my family. Today i was in the office and i heard a math teacher talking about it. and she said that if your a teen that you’ll grow out of it and then it will turn into OCD. Sometimes i dont feel like every body else. That like… im not normal. And that people star at me. Sometimes people will see me do it in class and they will look at there friends n say ” o that grl lindsay does this all the time.” n they will start blinking. It does bother me a lot. I have a very mild twitch. i wont do it rapidly. I will do it once n a while. but its where u can notice it. My twitch is mostly in the eyes. n i will move my head. But i dont do it that much any more as i did a child. Thank you.
Lindsay
Hey everyone!
I dont know if my post had sent yet but… its about me. I have the lower right eyed twitcher. Being 14 n middle school and having this problem… lets just say sucks so badly. I sometimes cry about it wishing i didnt have it, y me, y did i haft 2 get this. Once in school all thses boys sent me and my friends letter. well.. they were having a convo. about us. They said that i am a twitcher, ugly, fat and a lot of other things. I dont know y they haft 2 make is such a big deal. Its not like they are going to get it from me. I have a boyfriend. We have been going out for 3 months. What i like about him is that… he doesnt care about me twitching. Even tho i dont really do it that muuch. At least i dont think he cares… lets hope not.. people that make fun of us.. sayin that its weird.. well.. they dont know what we go threw everyday.. ppl have had it for day, months, yrs, or are now juss starting it. I have had it for 6 yrs.. maybe even 7 yrs. i started it when i was in maybe 2nd grade.. maybe even 1st grd. im not totally sure.. its one of those. I dont like how ppl make fun of it. when i get home from skool.. i will be really tired, i get stomach akes..(not sure if i spelled that right not.. sry).. but.. its a hard thing 2 deal with in a teenagers life.. in adults.. i dont think ppl mind as much.. im not sure.. well… im gonna go.. comment me on my things.. if my 1st post doesnt send.. then ill prlly try 2 type it again…
p.s. sry about it being so long… bye
can the twitching be related to sinus infection????
My left lower lid started twitching a few days ago, at the onset of a sinus infection. It seemed to start when I sneezed and now if I squeeze my eye shut tight, I can make it twitch..NOT that I want it! While I don’t really think there’s a cure for the twitch or even a logical explanation, it’s comforting to know I’m not alone!
This website is hillarious! I think it is so funny that people are really having serious discussions on eye twitching. I love it! My lower lid has been twitching for days! I think it’s just an anomoly. I came to this website looking for answers. Instead, I have been laughing my socks off. At least it took my mind off of my eye twitch. Love the blogs. Keep up the good work!
WOW, IT’S SO GOOD TO KNOW THAT I’M NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS S…PROBLEM,MINE JUST STARTED RECENTLY LAST WEEK AROUND THE TIME I FOUND OUT MY UNCLE PASSED AWAY,MY LEFT UPPER LID TWITCHES LIKE CRAZY AS A MATTER I HAVE SEEN MY EYE DANCE FOR ME, I TRY TO SLEEP WELL, EAT GOOD, OCATIONALLY DRINK,I DON’T DRINK COFFEE(BUT I DO A FAT BURNER WITH EPHEDRA 5 TIMES A WEEK FOR 3 WEEKS THEN STOP FOR ANOTHER 3 WEEKS JUST AS BAD OR WORSE).i HOPE SOME DAY IT WILL JUST PUF IN THE AIR & BE GONE, I WEAR CONTACTS ,DON’T RETAIN ENOUGH TEAR I’M SCREWED, ALSO I FELL LIKE MY EYES ARE VERY DRY FIGURES,I’M GOING CRAZY WITH THE TWITCHING….ARGGG.
Wow. There seem to be a lot of “lefties” here. I too have the upper (lefty) eyelid twitching problem. Mine started at least six months ago. Sometimes yawning initiates it. Other times, I wake up in the middle of the night with it going as rapidly as ever. So much for the fatigue and stress hypothesis. I think it is just a “thing” and many people have it and we just have to deal with it. I teach middle school, so Lindsay, you’re not alone in m.s. I’m sorry the kids make fun of you, but that is life in middle school. Just hang in there and smile and act like it doesn’t bother you. It’s not near as much fun to tease someone if they act like they enjoy it
As for me, I’ll just continue to deal with it. As long as I don’t start screaming curse words in public, I think I’ll be okay. Hang in there everyone and remember, it’s just a “thing” and it will pass. And it could always be worse.
I think this epidemic of eye-twitching is a result of the Gov’t experimenting on the general population. Yes,they randomly drop eyelid-twitching chemicals in the water supply and see how it effects employee absenteism, the economy, and global warming trends. Don’t take the vitamins!!! The myth about vitamins was propagated by the Gov’t. It’s a ruse to get us all to take the vitamins which are actually chemicals of which they want to conduct experiments upon the guinea-pig-general-population. Fight the good fight! Bare the twitch! Don’t fall prey to the vitmin ploy.
Just kidding. I think its just a part of life we all get a little taste of now and again.
Ok, I am glad I am not the only one!!!!!!
But I still feel like a freak. I have a mega busy stressfull lifestyle (although i dont feel stressed). And my left eyelid upper and lower comes and goes, so irregularly that I can not really describe a pattern. Going on holiday saturday, if it doesnt get better I am gonna go see a doctor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i dont like having it. wut does it come from?.. i always wonder y did we get it.. we most of us have it then y doesnt everyone else have it.. or if we just dont have it. but then i guess that wuldnt b us.. we wuld all b the same.. witch i want.. not twitching every few seconds.. im twitching right now.. i juss dont want it.. no matter wut..
Lindsay. I’m sorry kids are making fun of you. It’s good you have a nice boyfriend. Being a teenager is tough. I’m a 52 year old lady and still remember cruel people from school. Keep your strong self esteem and remember, people who make fun of others are just insecure themselves. You sound very mature. Ignore them and enjoy your life. My twitching isn’t visible to others. Have you been to several doctors to get their opinions? Hang in there..it gets better!
Gonna try the Vit-B pills now. Placebo effect eh? We shall see.
right eye [male] twitcher here. it’s been happening DAILY since november 2005 at all hours of the day. i’ve cut caffeine entirely, i’ve increased bananana intake, back on my multi-vitamin with cardio and jogging… drinking water like a camel preparing for his last great hike… and it’s not gotten any better.
i’m just eligible for health insurance as of this month, so i guess i will take my issue to a doctor for a professional opinion..
it is definately starting to put a damper on my life, it irritates me in class. it interferes with my work, and it keeps me from falling asleep etc. etc.
I have had undereye “fluttering” off and on for over 13 years now. It was first written off as a side-effect to a medication I was on but then it continued long after I was taken off that medication. It was gone for the most part for a few years until I was put on Depakote for epilepsy and migraine prevention. Now I get it quite frequently. As much as I hate it (first, it is irritating because I can feel it twitching, and second, because it is noticable), I am both seizure- and migraine-free. I will, however, try some of the tips you have all suggested. The stress relief, though, is not likely any time soon, as I am preparing to take the bar exam!
Wow a lot of twitchers out there, so nice to know I don’t suffer all alone. My upper eyelid started twitching a few days ago. Hasn’t done it in years. Glad to hear this brings me good luck, lets hope the lucky event happens soon and the twitching stops, cause needless to say it is very annoying. I am eating my centrum chewables as I read this. I keep them on my desk but still forget to take them. Oh well. Happy Twitching!
couple of years back when i wanted to put on muscle using creatine my eye(upper lid of my right eye) started to twitch. I discontinued using creatine and so no more twitching.
couple of months back, I started using cytogainer (weight gainer which has a minimum level of creatine). After using it for 3 weeks regularly I saw muscle growth as well as my eye twitch. So, I discontinued using weight gainer 2 weeks back, but my twitching has not come down.
I think I might have triggered some thing in my nervous system because of that 3 weeks of creatine. Hopefully I don’t have to suffer all my life. In case I have some improvement or solution I will surely share the news with all of you.

I’ve had lower right eyelid twitches throughout the day for two weeks now. Yeah.. Kinda annoying. I’ve done my share of research and I think I’ll start trying to boost my mineral intake. I doubt there’s a relation but I also have a very ITCHY DRY SKIN type rash on my left upper eye lid??? Is there anyone else out there with a smiliar issue. I tried unscented expensive facial cremes but it just burns and doesn’t seem to help much? I’ll post my result and cures if any arrise. I’m about to head to the store right now as a matter a fact and drop some cash on some potassium, calcium, and magnesium in whatever form available as long as it stops this TWITCHING!
I had to see my neurologist last week for a problem with a nerve in my shoulder. I just happened to mention the “twitch” I have in my left lower lid. He said they can inject botox into that area to relieve the twitch. Umm..I think NOT! Funny, right after that discussion, the twitch is gone! I know it will be back though, but it’s nice to know I can come to this site and find a great read with other twitchers!
Hi:
I’m glad that I found this Board. I’ve been looking for answers to my eye twitching problem for years. My doctor just says, “Don’t worry about it, it’s nothing”, but it is hard to believe that nothing is wrong when I have had twitching for years. It must have some cause. Given the number of people who have posted on this Board, its amazing that the medical community doesn’t have any answers or an explanation.
My twitches began when I was about 12 or 13. I would get twitches in my fingers/hands and around my eyes. They did not last long, but I remember them. I had some bouts with twitching in college and law school, but it was very infrequent. The frequency increased in my 30’s when my life stress increased, so I’m sure there is a stress connection. I don’t think that is the only cause though because I get twitches even when every thing is going well and don’t always get them when I’m under stress. My diet is horrible and I don’t have time to exercise as I should, so I’m sure they are contributing factors to my twitching problem.
The twitches could be in my eyebrows, in my eye lids or right at the rim of my eyelashes. I’ve had twitching on my right eye area and my left, above the eye and below,on the sides of my nose, around my mouth and have had periods where I had simultaneous twitching on both the left and right sides of my eyes at the same time. Sometimes the twitching would be visible to others, usually its only noticible to me, but people can tell I’m experiencing some weird sensation. Sometimes the twitching will vanish for months, but will invariably return. Right now, I’m twitching on my left eyelash rim about 10-20 times a day for about 5 seconds. No one else in my family has twitches so I don’t think its genetic.
If I put my finger on the twitch it seems to stop. I’ve also had temporary relief by placing hot, moist towels over my eyes, pinching my eyelids at the twitch site and lifting the eyelid from my eye. I like tonic water so I will try that suggested cure and will also try chiropractic therapy. Sometimes it is very difficult for me to find a comfortable sleeping position. If my neck is not in the proper position, I’m miserable the next day. I never considered that this could be the cause of my twitching, but I’ll check it out.
I really thought I had MS, a brain tumor or some other medical problem because the twitching was not just in my eye area, but in my face and extremities, but everything has checked out. I do get multiple sinus infections through out the year, so I believe there is some kind of a virus/sinus infection connection involved.
Having a place to vent about this is a BIG help. THANKS
Here is a link to an article by Dr. Ben Kim. He says eye twitching is due to overworked facial muscles.
http://chetday.com/twitchingeye.htm. What a relief.
Since my twitching is not just limited to my eye area, it seems that I may have something called benign fasciculation syndrome, so maybe there is hope for me yet. If not, there’s always the option of getting a botox shot in the eyelid. (lol)
Thank you for the opportunity to discuss this.
I think mine is caused by USPI, from which I suffer. Unidentified Skin Parasite Infection affects many people who don’t know they have it as well as those of us who have no doubt. Long considered to be a delusion of sufferers all over the world, it has recently been documented to be, in fact, a parasite. The national association’s website is very helpful in describing other symptoms in order to discern whether or not one has them (the critters.) Unfortunately, there does not seem to be huge interest among the medical community in treating it. Perhaps it has too recently become a “respected” ailment for many doctoral dissertations or research grants to have addressed it. If even just some of those exposed to standing, stagnant or contaminated water develop symptoms resistant to traditional treatment, maybe increased attention will bring about some relief.
Hey all! I, too, have been suffering from an ultra-annoying and unrelenting eye twitch for over three weeks now in my upper left lid (yeah, what IS it with that upper left??). I have been to the opthalmologist and neurologist, and have had blood work and a CT of my head done. Both doctors have attributed it to stress (the opthalmologist gave my lubricating eye drops too), although my neurologist wants to give it a few more weeks and if it is still there will do some further tests (I believe MRI and EMG).
Hopefully, this will subside for us all! :o) I have cut out caffeine (I was a coffee ADDICT), started taking a multi-vitamin with B6 and 12, magnesium/calcium supplements, and potassium supplements. I am having HEAVY anxiety over this twitch (I am convinced it is due to a disorder or disease) so my neurologist gave me some Lexapro for anxiety. I have been taking that a week now. Oh yeah, have been drinking a few bottles of water a day, since I was a cola addict too! Figure it can’t hurt any!
So far, NO relief. *SIGH* It truly is stressful. I wish everyone here the best of luck!
I would Like to say Hi to all The Twitch Clan..
I’m 25 and my left eye has been twitching longer than I can remember..OMG I hate it!!! It comes and goes, but whe it comes it drives me crazy.
I’m always stressed, and drink alot of coke so maybe thats why it happens. So for all of the eye twitchers out there..it usually goes away when you dont think about it. Yeah that sounds easy do you…lol
Again…great to see not alone…not much to add to the debate except to say that this twitch is soooo annoying. Mine just started out of the blue..upper right and twitches every 5mins…
Please take it serious guys, its a growth industry, who’s www theme song should be “Lets Twitch Today Like we did last Summer”. I claim vice-presidency of this small group, since I have had it since 1993, 13 years, here’my latet thoughts:
[1] It could be caused by the mite that causes Dandruff. Dandruff is linked to eczema and the dreaded skin-scrat [THE ITCH] Now here’s some bad news, dandruff can spead into your ears, and your ears canals are connected to your eyes and nose. So that explains why your eyes itch.
[2] Another cause is pollen and pollen that links upto Mast Cells. Do a google search on Mast Cells and Pollen. In this search you will find an oitment/gel/ drops called CROMLOYN mentioned, its not avaiable in the UK, but sounds promising. I must get some.
[3] A mad idea: I put a luke warm water bottle on my eyes and held it there for 10 minutes, guess what the itch stopped for a whole 9 days. About 2-3 days later skin flakes came out of my eyes, I collected them in a poly-bag, they look like dandruff flakes, or scaly skin, I got about 6 sizable flakes about as big as a match-head.
[4] Another mad idea: For the last 3 days I’ve been dipping a cotton-wool bud / stick, in neat Cider Vinegar [ a good disinfectant and germ killer] , and poking the wet stick in my nose and ears. So far minor relief, my eyes feel more comfortable and slightly improved. Do not put it [cider vinegar] in your eyes for G-ds sake. Using a cotton wool bud means the amount put inside these sinus channels is minimal. I reckon it will creep into the right areas and cleanse them out.
[5] Another mad idea, I think you can treat our condition via your 2x ear canals and 2x nostrils, I do not think its an eye-condition but a sinus infection illness thats got out of control and been neglected. The twitching is caused by something, its an acquired THING. I’m saying its an itch caused by something like dandruff mite. I’m convinced we catch it through our ears and not eyes.
Must return to work, pass me those 8 blocks of U235 will you and a map of were Bin Ladens hiding.
About 13 years ago we parked in a layby facing a large field of oil seed rape, a crop used in the UK for making cooking oil. The winds was blowing pollen towards us and it smelt wonderful, like sniffing a bunch of flowers. The next day I took ill and became so ill an emergency doctor had to be called, she diagnosed an heart-attack. In hospital they found my heart was perfect, but 6 other people had been brought in collapsed with the same condition, it was HAY FEVER.
Since then my eyes have not been right, twitch-twitch and 100x blinks. I read [www] Oil seed rape dust and pollen can attack and damage the nerve coverings, they call it the MYELIN SHEATH. Do a serach if you wish. Another WWW search revealed that some Japanese Drs had found saline solution with a drop of sucrose added [liquid sugar] beat botox and stopped the twitching. Search words> Japanese doctors saline / sucrose. [RW]
Stress, huh. Sounds plausible to me. I haven’t varied my banana, vitamin, coffee or sleep consumption, but, lately, I have been binging on work stress and long hours. Resultantly, I have two moods; angry or tired.
My left eye has twitched incessantly now for several weeks. I am relieved that it’s OK to ignore it. I’m OK that I can claim my next step is a cerebrospinal fluid exam–it sounds like an excuse to take time off of work.
Hey, back to the important detail of my left eye… is there any significance that, you know, like the palm/ money deal?
Hello twitchers…
I had a twitch for 4 months in my lower right eyelid. I looked through this site – and tried all the suggestions (thanks everyone). Nothing helped, however. Not vitamins, stopping coffee, soda, etc. The crazy thing is that I finally figured out it was all due to my mental state. Here’s the funny part:
My wife and I took the bold step to start sleeping with another couple we are friends with. Yes, swinging. I didn’t want to think that my twitch was because of this exciting situation, even though it started about the same time. After four months I found out it was because we were keeping it a secret from everyone. The moment I “outed” ourselves to a good friend, I felt a change in my eye, and about three days later the twitch was completely gone and hasn’t returned.
So…I know this is just my story – but if you’re keeping some secrets, let them out and see what happens!
I’am a twitcher. Started about 6 weeks ago. Went to the
Doctor & she said it would go away. That was one month ago.
It seems to be getting worse. What started out a lower left eye twitch has now become a whole left side of my face twitch.
Sometimes I hold my hand on my face so whoever I’am talking to doesn’t see it. Then I noticed today when it started …I closed my eyes & took a slow breath & it immediately stopped.
(for that episode anyway). I’ll try the minerals & more rest. Glad I’am not the only one. Well, I didn’t see anyone one else
with the whole left side deal going on. Best to all of you.
Just found out that dogs have an eye infection TWITCH thats caused by chronic inflamtion of the inner / upper eyelid area, in the eyelid **folds**, its called KERATOCONJUNCTIVITUS in dogs. I followed this up with a Google Search [for humans] and discovered that Allergan have a new drug on the market called RESTASIS for this human version of the condition, which is chronic nonstop twitch-twitch, twitchers. Its for persons who’s eyes always sting and feel inflamed and blink a great deal. Any Blepharospasm sufferers out there who read this please note the RESTASIS name, your Blepharo might well be an incorrect misdiagnosis and you need these tear correction and anti-inflam drops.
I am just getting over a nasty cold and sinus infection and my lower right lid is going like mad every few minutes. OJ and bananas aplenty, so it isn’t just potassium. I am wondering if sinusitus just prevents something from draining properly? Had this once as a teenager and actually managed to rupture a vein in my right eye – nasty looking bloodspot appeared that took more than six weeks to drain, ruined my social life. God bless the twitchy!
Hey,i came across this site while doing a search on my very own eye twitching problem. I have twitches in both my eyes from time to time and its so very annoying to the point that i feel like crying or just pulling my eye lashes out. I dont know what causes it, my mom goes if your left eye twitches that means something bad is going to happen and if your right eye twitches that means something good is going to happen, my dad says its stress and my sister says its because of the cold weather. Its been happening to me since i was a kid and i honestly dont think there is a way out of it. Life huh!!!.. Its complicated as it can be already without having to add some eye twitching to it…lol….ah…
I’m a freshman in college and I’m laying in my bed trying to read my book and my bottom left eyelid wont stop twitching!!! It’s been doing it for about a week now and it’s driving me crazy. I haven’t been getting the potassium, I do get enough sleep, and well for the stress….I guess you could say I’m pretty stressed. Finals are in two weeks. Is there anything to do to cure this problem? Maybe even make it stop for a few hours?
On the otherhand, I am studying to be a nurse, so if I figure anything out or hear anything from my professors on the subject, I’ll definitely come post it!
my upper right eyelid has been twitching constantly for about 2 weeks now. just yesterday i noticed my lower lip ( mid section) had a slight twitch also. dont know if this is stress related because i’m worrying about the eyelid twitch. all sorts of things going through my mind – als, ms, etc.
has anybody else experienced these symptoms..i regularly drink alcohol and smoke so think this might be a contributing factor…any commnets are helpful.
Eye Twitching, I have had it before and always thought it might be from being stressed and over worked, or maybe stress from a relationship that isn’t going as perdicted. At any rate, my left eye twitches alot recently, it’s the left eye, lower lid by my tear duct. Anyhow, the only different thing I’ve been doing in the past 6-8 weeks is that I have been drinking an awful lot of coffee and my twitching has been around now for a little over 4 weeks. Plus the caffeine is making me feel hyper and anxious and I can hardly catch my breath sometimes. I read that caffeine can cause I twitching…
I am switching to decaf……….I’ll let you know if it stops.
Hey y’all. I am an upper lefty. I tend to have dry eyes and read somewhere that could be a culprit. 2 drops did just seem to help actually! I have a feeling that there are probably multiple causes. But for me, my coffee intake is low, diet is very healthy (although mostly vegan I am aware of B’s) Another thought was that I am becoming quite nearsighted in my other eye (possible causing my left to work overtime? By the way kiwis are a fun source of potassium too. The fruit, not the bird. Peace.
I’ve had a lifetime of ‘on and off’ twitching. While reading all these posts, I realized that I haven’t had a twitch for ages. The only thing I’m doing differently is drinking 6 glasses of water a day – each glass being followed by a little salt, otherwise the water rids the body of sodium. I know its said that too much salt is bad for you (heart attacks, high blood pressure, etc.) but I’ve also read that salt (and pure water) is an absolute necessity for life. I know that I used to have a deficiency in both. There’s lots on the net about these subjects so its worth doing a bit of research if you think you don’t have enough salt and/or water in your body. I’m writing this here only IN CASE it is the reason why my twitches have disappeared because, otherwise, I haven’t changed a thing. Good luck!
AWESOME!!! I am not the only one!
I don’t remember where I heard it from, but it stuck in my head that when upper left eyelid twitches, it’s good luck, and bad luck with the right.
My upper right eyelid twitches much more often than my left, and it always leaves me feeling scared.
But now I have read the opposite, hopefully I can put the superstition behind and just accept this annoying thing.
Thanks to all the Eyelid twitching brothers and sisters!
Hi all! The muscles under my left lower lid twitches from time to time. I’m thinking that perhaps I am squinting or otherwise tensing my eyes too much when I use a computer monitor. I’m starting to get farsighted as I grow older so it’s getting harder to focus close in.
I’m going to try some prescription computer glasses that make it easier to focus closer in and consciously relax my eyes at least once an hour. With practice, I think I can maintain this relaxation when I work. Though I don’t usually notice that I am tense, if I take a few minutes to try and relas, I suddenly realize that I have been tense.
I am amazed to find this web site and see that it has been “hit” so many times since 2003. I have had my left upper lid twitching for months. It has happened almost every year and starts around Thanksgiving. I know I don’t drink enough water. So, I will increase that and take more calcium and B complex. I am also on the computer way too much so I will see if that helps as well. Thanks for having this site available. It does make you feel part of a crowd!!
lol So funny I decided to do a google search today because my eyelid is driving me nuts!
Didnt know it was such a big thing (eye-twitching).
I’ve been “suffering” with this about 4 or 5 yrs now. Long before I started using PCs regularly. But after reading these comments I wonder if it is sleep-related. Because I usually sleep for 3-4 hrs everyday as I’m a university student and have “re-programmed” my body like that to keep up with skool.
But it is very annoying when I’m in class trying to concentrate on the lecturer’s convo and my eye begins to twitch uncontrollably and I feel so self-concious!
Hopefully doctors can come up with a suitable solution to this. *sigh* *twitch twitch*
Trinibagonian who’s fedup
hey iam harry i looked up this i have been eye twitch free for than a 4-8 mths what the hell is going on pepole
Hi, lower lefty here and like many of you, I did a Google search just now looking for a solution to my twitch. I have had twitches on and off for years and always assumed it as due to stress/lack of sleep.
However, about 5 days ago I had a moderately big night out involving some LSD and have since had a major lower left lid twitch – and it’s huge. It happens of its own accord, when stimulated by me touching my eyelid or when I blink… and it’s majorly visible!!
I assumed it was due to the drugs, as I actually got more than enough sleep over the last week or so. Or perhaps because I have recently started wearing my glasses when using PCs (which is all day, every day), but now I am thinking it’s all due to bananas?
Until about a week and a half ago I was having a banana smoothie for brekkie at least four times a week, for the last couple of years at least. I forgot to buy bananas last week and haven’t got around to buying any since coz I am slack.
So I am off to work in a minute and I will be stopping at the fruit store on the way. I will post again with the result of my experiment, but if I don’t, you can assume I went to the doc about this and have since had a lumbar puncture/spinal tap/botox injection……
Grr…Argh…
I came to this site thinking I was going to find out something serious about my eye twitching. I thought I was having symptoms of a stroke. Come to find out its nothing but a twitch, an annoying twitch!
I guess I should be happy. Of course it could have been worse. Right?
Right eye twitcher here. Been going on for about a month now, a couple times per hour. I have had them before, but never for this long. I can induce the twitch if I clentch my eyes shut. Not that I like the twitches enough to want to induce them, but I thought it was interesting that I could make them happen. I cut out the coffee a few days ago but have not seen an improvement yet. I have been taking a good multi-vitamin for about 6 months now, so I don’t have a potassium issue. The only diet change that I have had since the start of the twitch is Wheat Germ. Can vitamin E be the cause? I doubt it, but for the hell of it I’m going to cut out the Wheat Germ for a while. Good luck out there. May we all be twitch free someday.
It’s got me beat and I’m going from England to Lodz Hospital in Llodz City, Poland to have my eye drainage canals closed by cauterisation. I suspect severe inflamamtion of the inner eye lids and skin folds and sockets.
I put a warm rubber hot water bottle on my eye sockets for 15 minutes and it stopped the twitching and blinking for a whole 9 days. The twitching started again on the 10th day but the “hot water bottle trick didn’t work” the 2nd or 3 rd time I tried it. Here’s a strange thing, I tried putting the hot water bottle behind my ears [on the rear ear bump/s] it did nothing for the twitching – but stopped my Tinnitus for 3 days. I say stopped, but to be correct it reduced the noise from 8 to 2 on the Richter noise scale. I tried the Quinine Soda water, thank you, but obtained no great relief.
TWITCH DIAGNOSIS:
There’s a fluttery twitch in one eye, there’s a twitch with a blink in both eyes, there’s a twitch, with a blink and a facial grimace, and there’s a twitch that involves a long slow blink and a twist of the lips and a face screwing session, or you can go for Gold and have the whole lot 10 – 20 times a minute. And stress can trigger it off, and Magnesium doesn’t work, and I used to be a Vitamin B1 fan, so could it be an after affect of too much VIT B1?
[DEFEATED AND DEPRESSED]
It’d be interesting to see a study based around just the comments on this blog – there’s data going back several years. I keep seeing lots of instances of upper left eyelid twitches (which is what I get) – I wonder if there’s something about our brains that predisposes us to twitches in a particular area of the eye?
After a spinal tap about four years ago, I was diagnosed with MS – since then, I’ve been eating more healthily (lots of bananas, too 😀 ). I do know that I don’t get enough sleep, and I spend too much time in front of the computer, and I reckon that’s probably the cause for me. This one’s been going for two weeks so far. Maybe I ought to get to bed early tonight?
Be strong, fellow twitchers!
I didn’t get any twitching all day yesterday. So I thought maybe it was a little twitching from the chickenpox episode I just got over (I’m 34). I did have a little pock on my lower right eye; but, not exactly in my eye. It was just on the lip of my lower right eye. I’m supposed to go back to work tomorrow after being couped up for ten days. Today I got a little twitch; but, after reading these blogs it simply just stopped. We’ll see what happens throughout the rest of the day. I’m definatley going to save this blog and read the stories everytime my eye starts twitching. Hopefully it won’t come back, and if it does…we’ll I don’t feel too bad now that I know everyone else on this blog is on the same cruiseliner.
P.S. One blogger mentioned the 1/2 facial spasm started after the twitching, I think during my research that was called 1/2 facial something….it’s a little more serious and if you have that…go see the doc.
These posts are very helpful. I’ve gotten twitching below my left eye in the past, usually in February after some sort of cold or sinus congestion. In both cases the twitching passed after a few months and the beginning of warmer weather. This time, I’ve got right eyelid twitching which again began in Jan-Feb after a sinus infection. Very annoying. Have tried ignoring it, but to no avail, so after reading everything posted here I got to thinking about other muscle twitches I’ve had in the past and how I resolved these through stretching and exercising that particular muscle.
Physical therapy tries to regain control of a muscle spasm by retraining the muscle how to work…over and over until it heals. The trick is, how do you exercise the eyelid? For the last few days, every time the twitching started I would “close” my right eye as hard as I could and hold it until the twitching stopped. Then slowly open. If the twitching started up again, I would repeat the process. So far this seems to be working. Twitching is less severe and less frequent, and when it does occur it’s not as jerky as before. I plan to keep this up and see how it goes longer term.
Chronic twitcher here, My lower left eyelid/face has been twitching for over a year off and on. I’m on Tegratol which works when I take it, but now I’m looking for a permanent solution!! HELP!!!
I have had this before now I really think it involves the brain and perhaps tooth decay because I have a cavity and feel unusual about the pain when it started happening I think Magnesium will help and so will bananas…
Another remedy could be just been alone in a really peaceful place thinking about nothing and concentrating in your symptom and trying to control it…
Best Wishes,
God Helps.. too
I prayed with my heart and asked for forgivness and it STOP COMPLETLY
I must say how appreciative I am for this forum, it has helped me realize I am not alone with my twitching. Mine has been going on since November, primarily the upper left, between the eyelid and the eyebrow. Occasionally I get it in the same spot on the right side. Very rarely do the two twitch at the same time. They tend to vary in intensity, and on a very rare day not at all. Since the end of January, I have had it spread to the upper right eyelid itself, and the one above that on the right has all but disappeared. I never get them on the lower eyelids (at least so far). I also get twitches in my legs, primarily in the calfs. Before this started, I had an extended sinus infection, possibly virus-caused, but never got that checked out.
Of course I have Googled and Yahooed the internet for every last bit of info I can find about eyelid twitching. I get at least 8 hours of sleep each night (except when the twitching keeps me up in the middle of the night thinking bad thoughts). I have dropped caffeine from my diet (was a habitual diet cola drinker) and replaced that with lots of water (I was also thinking the aspartame in the diet cola was a factor). The only stress I can think of is the constant wondering when the next twitch will hit.
I boosted my potassium with bananas and raisins, and my magnesium with supplements. No obvious change in the amount of twitching with that.
I’ve been to the optometrist, internal medicine doctor and the opthemologist who all basically told me that it “should eventually go away” and they didn’t have a magic cure. The opthemologist did mention the Botox route, but he hasn’t used it since he was attending the Mayo Clinic which was many years ago. Part of the reason for the expense in Botox, he explained, is once the container of it is opened, it must be used within 1 day or it’s no good.
I have had some blood tests run on the basics (metabolism, cholesterol, thyroid), but no red flags there. Blood pressure is slightly elevated but nothing that warranted being put on medication.
I must say the only time that I’m pretty much guaranteed I won’t get any twitching is when I go for a daily walk. Something about that makes whatever is causing the twitching get distracted with all the other muscles being used.
I am also exploring the potential it is alergy-related. When I was out of town during Christmas and again a couple weeks ago for a few days, I had almost complete days without twitching while I was away. I am experimenting with my diet, too, to see if anything triggers it. I don’t relish the thought of another dead-end trip, this time to the neurologist. Yes, I do hope this goes away soon!
My eye is twitching as I type this. I really think mine is from repeated dental issues I have been having. Frist a cracked tooth, then it got infected (negligence on my dentist’s part), switched dentists & had a 3 hour root canal, then had bone lengthening surgery. Currently have a temporary crown while the bone grows back – then comes the real crown. When I touch the crown, I have pain, so I’m thinking I have another infection in the pulp. I also have facial swelling on that side when I wake in the a.m. I really think this messed up one of my facial nerves! Auggh! it is pissing me off. Very annoying.
It has been driving me mad for about 2 weeks now – upper right eyelid flickering constantly, day and night – I think it is to do with looking at a computer monitor for too long, and I have been quite addicted to a PC game for a couple of months. I know I should stop…
Its my right upper eyelid which has been flickering for a couple of hours every day for more than 6 months now. I have been on a low carb diet for 6 months now but I do have atleast 6 bananas everyday. Should I try salads instead of bananas???
Such a relief! (Kinda) I tend to be a bit hypersensitive when things go wrong with my body. Knowing that this upper right eyelid twitch is a common thing makes me feel a little better but geez I hope it doesn’t persist!
The funny thing is I think mine was brought on by stress as I was a wreck yesterday before it started. As the day went on I relaxed but then got annoyed all over again because of the constant twitch. So much so that it kept me up all night and I am totally sleep deprived right now. And the eyelid twitches on!
Another oddity: When I finally did try to lay down and close my eyes last night, the twitch went from a few times per minute to rapid fluttering. Weird.
My left eyelid has twitched off and on for a couple of months. I do drink lots of caffeine, but I always have for the past several years.I do think that the artificial sweeteners may be a factor, because I have been drinking diet soda recently, whereas I used to drink regular pop, and the twitching has been worse lately. I am also intrigued by the possibility that it could be a viral thing, as I have had some issues with cold sores this winter.I’m a bit of a hypochondriac, so I have pondered the possibility of multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, etc., but it looks like I can probably lay those fears to rest.
What a relief to see that other people actually suffer with the same annoying twitching! I’ve been twitching (lower left eyelid) for about 5 years now on and off. It’s definately stress and sleep related for me.
I’ve tried yoga and morning meditations to relief stress. At night I’ve tried relaxation tapes. They work for me in order to get a better night’s sleep. I’ve also tried tonic water – it has some natural muscle relaxer in it – but you have to drink quite a bit of it to experience any relief.
I think it’s better to take care of the root of the problem (stress/fatigue) rather than mask it.
Thanks for creating a board like this. It’s truly great to know I’m not alone!
Hello everyone.Glad to be here.We are not alone at least.I am 27 y/o and i have this left lower eyelid twitch since last summer(8/2005).I’ve been under too much stress because my wife has a problem that is not cured yet(plugged ears). Her father was sick and he is untill today. We are a family spending too much money at the doctors.Anyway,i’ve tried magnesium complex and natural tears because i have that dry eye condition, vitamin B complex and still nothing. Now i’ve noticed a pulse under my left eyelid that maybe causes that twitch. My neurologist gave me some pills called kratium and i’ve started it today.I hope it is only stress.Good luck everyone!!
Thank you for your site.I’ve had this twich on my botton lid, very annoying. I had an appointment today where the other person brought it up….he apologized but mention he felt I was winking at him. Made me feel self conscious. Well I think I take plenty of vitamins, excercise almost every day, hardly any caffeine so it has to be stress. don’t eat banabas though, no very fond of them, but I guess Ibetter start, maybe it’ll help. Thank you everybody for sharing your experiences. Twich, twich……
Hello fellow twitcher’s, I’ve had my left upper eyelid twitching now since November 2005 and now my right lower lid twitches too. I’m also getting floaters in my eyes that are getting worse. And I see these squiggly things that are constantly moving in the background with burning sensation. I take magnesium and bananas and multi-vitamin. I’m only 34 and I feel like I’m going blind. Does anyone out there have the same symtoms???
Hallelujah!!! I found that damn term for blinking-flickering-pulsating-twitching-eyelid! It’s myokymia, thanx to this odd blod started in Sep8’03! I spent 40 minutes googling fot it. So much junk – no answers.
I’ve been under twitchy-eyelid spell for couple of weeks now. My fiancee had the same for couple of weeks a month or so ago. So, add “infectious/contagious” to the list as well.
I’m healthy, eat healthy food. Except for last 3 years I have:
-my regular one cup of coffee every morning at work to wake
-always getting not enough sleep
-stressed out as hell
-burntout as well
-getting cold feet about my wedding in May (that’s for last couple of months though)
Anybody got problem with getting married with eyelid phenom?
SF, CA
*giggle*
I came here via a google search for eyelid twitching.
I like the idea of calling them tremors. Very serious sounding.
Hi All, Same as everyone else here, I too suffer from the occasional eye twitching of mainly upper right(Good News Kind). According to my doctor, It is mainly from lack of lubrication and the drying effect of the heaters at my house. Although my stressful work (computer systems engineer) and staring at the computer screen has alot of contributing factors too. Oh Well, It has stopped for now and I have learned to ignore it anyways. Good Luck to all my fellow twitchers
Hiya,i’ve had this twitch on my upper right eyelid is so annoying, the asian saying it that if your eyelid twitches something bad is going to happen, so i’m quite worried. but I don’t think this is the case. I’m suppried theres no real quare for this.
I had this twitch in my upper right eyelid a few months ago. It finally stopped and now it has come back again. I quit smoking 6 months ago, have been dieting and have been off caffeine for 3 weeks. Stress is not out-of-the-ordinary. Thought I was having a stroke.
Now I’m thinking it may be part of some third-world country’s plot to take over the world by sending electronic pulses in the air to us super-intelligent beings to make us so pre-occupied with “the Twitch” that we’ll never notice that our society is crumbling at our feet.
Thanks for the enlightening!!! Good luck to all.
So many twitchers .. who knew? And so many in the left eye … my upper left eyelid has twitched since October. For several months, it twitched many times an hour and also felt irritated. After a trip to the eye doctor, eyedrops, and no relief, I went again. This time I got a different eye doctor, and his only suggestion was that it appeared I may have some plugged oil ducts which would explain the dry irritation. He suggested warm compresses, which I tried, and it helped a lot! I know the irritation and the twitching are connected in my case because they started at the same time. Always lots of stress, but I wasn’t sure that was the whole answer. All I know is that, for me, if I put warm washclothes briefly on my closed eyelids am and pm, it keeps the irritation and twitching down to a minimal level instead of constant.
Who can control the constant stress we all seem to be under? If we could just slow down …
try massaging your temples to stop eyelid twitching. it worked for me. it’s based on Trigger Point Therapy whereby muscle ‘knots’ and spasms refer pain from one part of your body to another (ie from your temple to eyelid). more info about this intriguing concept if you look it up on google and go to triggerpointbook.com where you feel pain isn’t necessarily where it is coming from. doesn’t make much sense but even if the whole thing seems a bit crazy, just try massaging your temples. it’s worth it! and it doesn’t take much time or effort. good luck
I am so glad I found this page. My left upper eyelid has been twitching for a while now and I am quite worried. I have stopped coffee but unfortunately cannot give up looking at computers. Has anyone found a solution? Please help!
very surprised to find so many people out there with this thing.
is this an epidemic? virus spreading throughout the globe ?
pulsating microchips implanted behind our eyeslids by aliens?
well, I´m a lower left twitcher. Pretty constant for a month.
I did a word search of this entire document to see possible difference in left vs. right eye frequency. The frase “left eye” is 50% more frequent (222 times) than the frase “right eye” (150 times). Seems like a statistical difference whatever it means.
Kind of glad to find all of you fellow twitchers in this world. Cheers.
Reading more of all your comments from this list (didn’t have time to read them all the first time on!), there are so-o many suggested causes, but I only drink one coffee a day, drink lots of water, my stress is so much better than when this started, I’m trying to get more rest, I already take vitations, etc., I don’t use computers much.
I’m the one that got much relief from the warm compresses on my eyes, but even that doesn’t always work. The twitching isn’t even what bothers me the most, it’s the itchy feeling which made me think allergies, but the eye dr. wondered at my only having it in my left eye …. 5 months now and counting … allergy medicine made no difference. I’m convinced there is some answer, so I’ll keep reading both previous comments and any new ones.
Keep venting … it does help to know I’m not alone .. I feel bad for you twitchers who have trouble driving and where the twitch involves more than a little annoying quivering .. that would be hard to take!
Happy St. Patrick’s Day .. try some green beer?
Hello,I’ve been here again.Anyone noticed a pulse under the eyelid?I called a neurologist and he said its a kind of an overtensed muscle active.Ok i am under stress. This pulse maybe is the cause of the lower left eyelid twitch. The Frequency of that pulse is 2 times(pulses) per second. If anyone had the same please email me and share your opinions with me.Thanks
I have had the twitch on the lower left eyelid as well for the past 2 to 3 weeks and it really bothered me at first, especially when I was talking to people at work…I’m in sales. I feel very self-conscious about it, although I think it is hardly noticeable, to others, anyway. I just today searched “eye twitch” and am starting to put together the possible suggested causes with the new things going on in my life. I am a student taking an important class for my degree and have been studying hard and stressing about an important test. Along with that is the increased coffee consumption to be able to stay up late to study. So there is the stress, caffeine, and less sleep. And then to top it off I started tanning about 3 weeks ago, and I sweat quite a bit in the bed and have not increase my already less than adequate water intake. That was about when the twitch started. So it all sounds about right. I bought some bananas today and as soon as they turn yellow I will start eating them and I am going to increase my water intake. There’s not a whole lot I can do about the late nights of studying and the stress kinda goes along with my life right now, but hey, it’s all good. I will let you know how it goes! It’s good to know there are others out there!
My right upper eyelid began twitching a year ago (April 2005), about a week after getting a live MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine. It has not stopped. It is worse in sleep and just upon waking, and remains fairly constant throughout the day.
After experimenting in every way possible to determine what could be causing this, I have come to the conclusion that it may be connected to the viral vaccine.
According to my Anatomy textbook, viruses are made up of proteins that are very similar to our own myelin sheaths (the protective protein around our nerves). Consequently, when the body makes antibodies to attack the virus, they can sometimes mistakenly attack the myelin sheaths as well. This could result in a twitching eyelid.
But even if this is not the exact mechanism that brought this twitching on, I am fairly sure it is related somehow to the vaccine, since the timing of onset is so close.
I’m so excited to be part of the club… 😉 My twitch is on the lower lid of my right eye. I’ve never experienced this before about 2.5 wks ago. I remember the first one I had, I was like, damn… this is annoying! And I still have them! I have also been getting more migraines than usual the last few weeks, so I’m wondering if it has something to do with my eyes being sensitive to light? Another strange occurance is that I’ve been thinking about vegetables a lot lately. If you knew me, you would know this is odd. This leads me to believe it is some sort of vitamin deficiency. Hope our club gets noticed and some more research is done… so we can all be cured of the obnoxious twitch.
GOOD LUCK TO ALL!
Well this is a pretty good explanation for eyelid myo…
whatever
I went thro a couple of sites and the info is pretty good.
this damn condition has plagued me know for like days and i feel like goin insane.
thanx a lot luis you have kinda made me better with ur blog
Hey thanks! I’ve had a twitchy eye for weeks, and now every time I notice it…. I laugh.
For some reason it occurred to me today that I had not had an eyelid twitch for almost a year. That was a very pleasant thought because last year I was going crazy due to constant eye twitching. I stumbled upon this site, and it was more informative than anything else I could find. After reading all of the posts, I decided that I was probably suffering from too much stress, too little sleep and too much caffeine. Well, none of that was going to change in my life, so I focused on the potassium theory. I started eating more bananas and taking a daily supplement. And my twitch went away. I can’t say if the potassium really worked, or if it was the placebo effect, but I didn’t care. My eyelid stopped twithing. At any rate, I just wanted to post my experience to let you know that there is hope.
interesting to see that a lot of people complain about twitches after sinus infection. I have had long time sinusitis since September and have now had constant – but constant – from waking to sleeping twitches in the upper right eye, feels more like pins and needles. Anyone else suffer from this?
Just off to eat a banana….
Hi Everyone,
Like everyone else listed I am glad I am not the only one with this problem. My lower left eye has been twitching for about 2months. It starts in the morning and continues until I go to bed. I am one of those that get a migrane about once a week. I also have dry skin that drives me crazy in the winter especially at night. I am a pastor and like everyone else under constant pressure. It is so nice to know that I am not alone and perhaps someday it will quit.
I have a lower left eyelid twitch and i am taking now ginsana pills. The ginseng is natural antistress root.I feel better now.The twitch is coming everytime i sneeze. Its strange but it makes sense if my twitch is caused from an overetensed muscle activity.
i use to have eye twitches evry now and then but they started getting worse and worse. NOW THEIR CONSTANT!!! it wont stop in my top rite eyelid and its soooo anoying and obvious to other people! but it got worse ever since caffine and energy drinks became my new favorite thing and i have been staying up late and geting up early and stress started to increase. i hav not had a banana since i dont know when but now that i know this, im gonna be CHOWIN DOWN on those things! im glad to know im not the only one… is there anyone else thats younge and has this?
~june
lots of stress after i read up some scary stuff on the net. in fact parts of my body also twitch – is that also some kind of deficiency? first it was my lower right eyelid. now it is upper left eyelid. should i be very scared? i’m extremely tense. do u think a facial could trigger it off?
I am a 51 yr old woman and have had eye lid twitches since I was a teenager… so a very long time now.
Whenever my left eye lid (upper or lower) twitches… I ALWAYS have a good day and many times receive something positive… a letter, a gift… something.
Whenever my right eye lid (upper or lower) twitches… it ALWAYS means something bad, or negative or something that may not go right will happen.
This has ALWAYS been the case with me.
But… I don’t have to have these eye twitches to have good or bad happen… many times my eye lid doesn’t twitch and the good and/or bad will happen.
Anyway, I hate it.
Upper left eye twitcher here…been going on nearly 2 months. I do wear glasses and am curious how many others wear glasses or contacts. I’m so stumped. I’ve done the vitamins. Cut out caffiene and nicotine and all other extra curricular activities (Alcohol)…hasn’t changed. Of course there’s worry of some brain problem, but haven’t hit the doctor – which is always the case.
It’s odd that there are so many upper left eyelid twitchers…there has to be something to it. It’s annoying as heck.
This is my second post. Wanted to share that my upper right eyelid twitch has been gone for two weeks. Going on the “strain” theory, I realized my eyeglasses tend to shift down on my nose causing my eye to go through gyrations trying to focus. So, back to the optometrist to have the glasses adjusted so they stay put. For two days after that the twitch became more like rolling waves. Then it was gone. It was gone a whole day before I realized it. I’ve also started eating bananas, getting more sleep, etc. But I have a feeling the eyeglass adjustment, at least in my case, may have done the trick. Good luck all.
It is comforting to know that there are others out there experiencing the same problem as me. For almost 3 months now, my right eye, the right upper lid to be precise, has been twitching. It twitches everyday, and is clearly noticeable since the eyelashes on that eye move left to right constantly. I’m not sure what caused it, and I haven’t had any luck in getting rid of this annoying nuscance! Any tips on calming it down? I find it hard to read at times, and study for my classes because when it twitches so violently at times.
Okay, I admit, I came across this site because I Googled “twitching eyelid”. Mine has been going on for 2 days now. The spasms last for about 20-30 seconds, and occur every 10 minutes or so… This is sending me completely over the edge. I do plan on using the brainstem neoplasm theory to my benefit though.
Interesting about the B-complex theory because I’m on a health kick and have recently started drinking dried wheatgrass and ingesting massive amounts of B vitamins via Royal Jelly. I ran out of the Royal Jelly and haven’t had any since Monday morning – the twitching started on Tuesday.
Wow. Can’t believe so many people have this too. Mine is so rare I usually forget about it, but today it’s been twitching uncontrollably. Searched for lower eyelid twitching in Google and got this.
…And congratulations, Adam–yours was comment #777 to this post!
Quite frankly, I was amazed at the response to this. I can only suppose that there are not too many web sites out there on the subject, and somehow I got the attention of Google through wording or something.
All I know is that each month between 8,000 and 10,000 people visit my blog for this post alone. I never expected that.
So thanks for visiting, commenting, and participating!
Hey,
A million thanks to this website. I was beginning to get worried about my left eye twitching so often…moreover because…there’s a popular superstition in India…which says twitching of the left eye is a presage of sorts that tells you about bad times to come….tho I’m not quite a believer in all this…I wanted to know the true reason so I can relax…
My left eye starting twitching around christmas time this past year. I was driving my two older kids on an 8 hour drive to see their dad. I didn’t really think anything of it, but it was annoying!
It went away for a few months, and has come back now. If i put evrything into perspective, my diet stinks, I’m a little overwight, I’m 34 yrs old, and I’m now on Effexor for my stress. We just started a new business, and the stress level has been extreme. I’m always on the computer, whether it for work or leisure time. When the trip to drive the kids was in place, I remember them bickering alot the whole time, which caused me to constantly raise my voice at them. (Stressful) My sleep pattern has been all messed up lately, and more so being on the meds now. I read alot of posts here, but not all. Has anyone mentioned smoking? I do smoke, and I’m crazy for Dr.pepper. lol that’s about the only caffeine intake I crave. Thanks for this site to read about. I know I’m not the only one out there. So when I bring this issue up to my doctor again, he can’t say I’m crazy!
By the looks of things I think there might be an alien conspiracy to this eye-twitching thing! :] Maybe it is a plot to take over the world one eye twicher at a time…….All joking aside, my eye twitching problem started a few weeks ago and has been driving me crazy ever since. I stay away from caffeine, take many vitamins and supplements but I do have moderate stress and live in a very dry climate. The same ol’story as everyone else except here is the weird part. My husband has had his eyes twitching for about the same amount of time as me! What is going on? I’m guessing we either are not eating any bananas, (which I know he has been eating) or maybe it might have to do with the fact that neither of us has been drinking enough water during that time. Which I think in conjunction with both of our stress levels and the dry air around us does not help either. Otherwise, maybe something out there is watching us :]Do-do-do-do-do
Hi all,
I know this won’t help most of you but maybe some…
Since reporting my twich here three months ago I’ve stopped taking Welbutrin – the twiching stopped a couple weeks later and I’ve been twich-free for about two months.
Since Welbutrin is used for depression and smoking cesation I’m pretty sure it messes with your natural stress chemicals in some way.
Good luck!
People will sell you tinctures, bananas, pills, surgery, injections or anything they can to earn cash from you whilst you could be going insane and willing to try anything.
I think that eye twitching is caused by squinting too much. Your eye muscles become tired. You can get too much sleep and squint whilst you are sleeping. You can get too little sleep and squint then too. You can squint in one eye if your monitor is off to one side. More sleep, more bananas, more pills aint going to make you STOP SQUINTING!
Perhaps try tea bags over the eyes, or a herbal calming tablet to help you sleep more restfully so you don’t squint in ya sleep. I haven’t tried muscle contraction exercises either. Perhaps, if you’re not afraid of the wrinkles, you could try contracting and relaxing the affected muscles a few times, a number of times a day to strengthen them.
‘Squinty and Twitchy’ are trademarks of the Iddy Cartoon Corporation.
Idris
(P.S. squinting and twitching can be caused by other things too though)
So, stop over-tightening the muscles around ya eyes people! Thought I should perhaps explain what ‘squinting’ is to those who might not have heard.
Id.
OK Twitchers…have any of you had this twitching, tingling sense across the bridge of the nose? It has been going on for about a month at random times, several times a day, and if I look in a mirror realllllllly close I see movement…can actually see the twitches…WTF! And the bridge gets really cold…even if I am the hotty that I am. I used to get the eye twitch thing pretty regular, lower right eye, but not anymore…not for about a year..and BOOM…the nose starts getting into the act. Anyone, anyone?
I didnt realize so many people share the same annoyance. At the present time my diet is good i excerise daily -knowing this drops cortisol levels and other stress hormones. Just recently however i have been preparing to study for an MCAT exam -medical entrance exam – and since, i have been experiencing this persistent eye tic for 3 weekes now.
The verdict, well i imagine its stress, coincidence, i think not. anyway, thought i would add my own experience in support of the stress theory and give my results. Stress = tics.. In physics the actual formual is “stress / strain = modulas of elasticity” where the modulas of elasticity is a contant for a specific substance, in this case eye mucscle.
I don’t know why, I found it so comforting to read that eye twitching is a common problem for many people…I guess I don’t like to be a freak. It is a saying that if your right eye twitches then you’re going to hear bad knews. I’ve been hearing bad news ever since I had the twitching problem…and it’s so irritating. So I planned on getting rid of the twitch…maybe my luck would change. I drank a bottle of contrex water (rich in magnesium), put a cloth of green tea and ice water on my eye and took a nap on the sofa…thinking of sea horizons and imagining the stress draining out of me; when I woke up I was feeling stress free and twitch free…hope the bad knews stops coming too…I’ll keep my fingers crossed. Best of luck for everyone…
Lower left twitcher here. Just wanted to add that my twitching also followed a nasty sinus infection, and would often trigger after a sneeze. The idea of stressing, or flexing, the twitching muscles only made the problem worse (for me) – or just triggered more twitching. The twitching occurs in my lower left eyelid, closer to the inside of my face–toward my nose. I live in Southern California and surf in fairly polluted water constantly. I know that’s probably the cause of my sinus infection in the first place, but wonder if somehow it’s linked to my twitching as well. Anyway, good luck to all those other annoyed twitchers out there. I’m off to purchase some bananas!
It started about a month ago (The right upper eyelid twitching), maybe a frying pan in the side of my head could make it stop, maybe a fork in my eye. Please make it stop
good luck to all who have this
I’m 20 weeks pregnant and my left eye started twitching at about week 14 while I was vacationing in Florida. I don’t drink coffee, no alcohol (temporarily that is!) I eat very well and am taking pregnancy vitamins. This problem is bothering the hell out of me!! I am curious if anyone has had this problem during pregnancy.
Both upper eyelids started twitching May of 2005 but only upon closing my eyes. Every single time I close my eyes they pulsate or flutter miles a minute. I have seen two neuro-opthamologists. One suggested stress but my life is less stressful than prior years. The other one actually told me to be grateful that I just have a twitch, that people have real diseases out there. I have eliminated all caffeine and get plenty of sleep. I have had a Brain MRI to no avail. I have also added ringing in the ears. Does anyone have the same type of spasm?
About a year ago my upper left eye started to twitch. It went on almost all day for about 2 months then went away for 1 year. Now it has came back same spot and it has been a little over 2 months. I have tried the bananas-didn’t work. I tried the tonic water-didn’t work. I tried a multi vitamin-didn’t work. I am going to try drinking more water. If that don’t work I will just cut my eye out.
Well i think it might actually be the world domination idea… every sicne i started planning both my top eyelids are twitching. haha
So should i believe the right eye is bad news or good news… or will i get alot of money?…. Since my left eye is twitching too…. Does that double me up on th ebad news… or good news? Will i be double rich? The Lotto in FL was 80,000,000 last night… I didn’t win… that rules out the money….
I have been suffering an upper left eyelid twitch now for almost a month. THis condition comes and goes, I think the last time I got it was a year ago. The funny thing is, it seems to happen usually around the beginning of spring each year, which leads me to believe it might be some type of allergy. Not sure. The other thing I’ve noticed with the eyelid twitch is that the rest of my body has this peculiar itchy feeling, very subtle, but it’s like a restless sort of feeling where I fidget and I feel itchy all over. Does anyone else out there experience this? Maybe thats just a stressed out reaction to the twitching itself…like I’m stuck in a box and can’t get out. Seriously though, can i just say how annoying this twitch is? It is so distracting that it affects my ability to listen to people and to focus on certain tasks. What a bizarre condition. If I could harness the energy from my eyelid, I could power 12 flashlights for a week. Its like somehow a little vibrator found its way into my eyelid and now its just hanging out there doing its thing. Why isn’t there more medical research happening into this very irritating and indeed life-altering affliction?
Ive been twitching in my eyes but it has now spread throughout my entire body. i take centrum performance that has lots of b vitamin stuff in it, b12, b6, and biotin
im doing modeling and its affecting me so bad that u can it in photos
i dunno what to do… my roommate told me to drink a bottle of gatorade.. it did stop my twitching for the day but 2 days after they came back! \
im embarassed to ask my doc about it… any suggestions
I can’t believe this poor guys blog has become a message board for eyelid twitchers!
Alas, I too have a major eyelid twitching thing going on which started last night/morning around 4 am. I went to sleep hoping it would stop but it’s still going at it today at noon. The reason I felt that I would post is this:
about 12 years ago I got “Bells Palsey”. I was only 26 and it was a very scary experience. Bells Palsey causes one side of your face to stop working. It paralyzes completely. You cant lift your eye brow, move your eye lid, flare your nostril on that side and so on. The mouth droops terribly on the affected side. Your face feels numb. One side of your tongue is dead to taste. I walked around looking like I had an injection of novacaine in one side of my face. I hated it. I was frightened that I would stay like that forever. I cried a lot. I prayed a lot. Many issues that I had never thought about before came up, like “Will my husband still love me? Is he afraid to look at me? Does he still want me?” I’m the mother of 6 kids. At the time they were still pretty young. One day I noticed a bunch of kids staring in the window at me! My boy had told them that my face was “falling off” (he was 6) and of course they all wanted to see. I dreaded going into public to shop, etc. as everyone stared at me and asked me what happened to my face. I would notice my husband looking at me from the corner of my eye and then quickly look away when I turned towards him. I know it was scary for him too, and we were both grappling with my new look but I have to say that throughout the experience he was the most supportive and loving husband anyone could hope to have. At night he helped to put this thick “eye laquer” into my eye so that my eye wouldn’t dry out in my sleep. (It couldn’t close so I had to tape it shut at night) He often kissed that side of my face.
The day before it happened I noticed that my eyelid was twitching horribly. It was annoying as hell. I noticed that my tongue suddenly felt burned…you know the feeling it gets when you burn the hell out of it on hot coffee or something? It felt burned on the one side and I lost taste. (I assumed I had burned it on my morning coffee) I also noticed my nostril twitching slightly. I became intensely tired and fell asleep in the car while I was reading and the kids played in the school playground. I woke up, drove the kids home and noticed that my face felt strange. I looked in the mirror and lo and behold, it was dead on one side. I was scared to death. My best friend watched my kids while my mom and I went to the hospital. I thought I had a stroke. I was never more scared. My heart was pounding with fear. A long time nurse happened to be at the hospital ER that day and since my pulse was racing and my blood pressure was up, she began to grill me about whether or not I had just used cocaine or speed! She told me to admit what I had done and it would be better for me! I was angered by that…really angered. I wanted to slap her! She was rude and uncaring. You know, I too have experience working in an ER with frightened people,(I later got into the medical profession) and to this day I have never met anyone as horrible as that nurse was to me on that day. I understand that people can be hard to deal with, especially if they are frightened and hurt…but there is NO excuse to treat anyone with rudeness and disrespect!!
I happened to be extremely lucky that day to have a Doctor who happened to be filling in for our usual local physician. He was an older man, but he had seen this before. He immidiately knew that I had “Bells Palsey” (which, by the way, is NOT terribly common) and was able to calm my fears…somewhat. I was given an immidiate injection of the steroid “Prednisone”, which is believed to help with the inflamation of the lining of the specific facial nerve that is affected with Bells Palsey. He told me that since I was young I “MIGHT” get my face back. That if I were older, or elderly, the chance of regaining my facial movement, etc. back was much, much less.
I prayed daily. I did these excersizes daily where I tried to force my face to move. I tried to force my eyelid TO TWITCH. I tried to force my nostril to move, etc. NOTHING. I was pretty bummed out. I also used hot moist towels to sooth my face as it always felt extremely tight on the one side. One morning about 7 months into the HORROR, I noticed my nostril actually twitched! I practiced harder. A couple of days later, I had probably 95 percent of my face back. I was so grateful! A month or two before this happened to me, I had been in a crappy mood and I mumbled to my best friend what an OLD HAG this checker in the grocery store was being to me. (yeah, I know…what a whiner, right?) THe woman happened to have a type of palsey that caused her head to shake from side to side. (no, she didnt have parkinsons) I had said something mean about her palsey to my friend.
Lets just say, I am a changed woman.
Hi All,
Here’s my 2 cents.
I’ve been getting infrequent twitches (both eyes) for years. Although they feel strong to me it doesn’t worry me because they are almost invisible to others. There is a pattern, however; it almost always happens after a few late nights, usually involving drink.
This weekend I had twitches, this week I’m detoxing. For me it’s a predictable pattern: get run down, get twitches. It’s my bodys way of telling me to get a bit of sleep once in a while…
Remember that stressing and worrying about it won’t help; just accept it knowing that others rarely if ever notice it, unless it is severe in which case see the doc.

My left lower eyelid has been twitching for almost 5 weeks now, and it’s really annoying. I’ve tried massaging my face, and taking relaxing baths… but it’s to no avail.
I will stop the coffee and eat a banana a day, but if it persists any longer I will see my doctor.
It hasn’t been the first time I’ve had an eyelid twitch but the only other time I’ve had this, it went away in a week.
Has anyone else had a twitch for this long?
Thanks for noticing all us eye twitchers, its hilarious…and you actually went and did some research…in fact, i dont need to refer to any other site.
But it was hilarious, I was reading the blog and it was funny to think there must have been thousands of other brethren who’d come to your site looking for a damned remedy to the twitch.
PS: still unsure about the cause, i too sleep regularly, hate caffeine, love tea, take multi vits, eat bananas…yeah mebbe i have supressed stres from work…and 12 hrs min on the comp..
dunno.
Where i come from, there’s a local remedy. Stick a tinyyyyy piece of paper on the eyelid…nono, thats for fluttering eyelids..not the twitch that can be felt, but not seen
. Its like a sudden gush of blood
owell
peace
I totally agree with Murdock. I’m feeling extremely irritable alongside my upper left eye twitch ( which has now spread to my right eyebrow!) I’m feeling like elton john at princess di’s funeral (the famous eye brow dance when singing candle in the wind). I do hope it goes soon. Mind you, i’m suffering form cystitis at the moment. Could they be linked?
