Eyelid Twitching

September 8th, 2003

Okay, it seems like a large number of people visiting my site are coming to read about eyelid twitching. In my fourth post (I am now over 250), I simply mentioned that I had one of those eyelid twitching episodes a lot of people seem to get, and it was irritating the heck out of me.

Suddenly, this site became the Mecca for Eyelid Twitchers. I can only suppose that there is relatively little out there about it, or that more people link to my site than they do to sites all about Eyelid Twitching, so I rank higher in Google.

Anyway, I started feeling bad for all those poor twitchers who came to my site seeking information or relief, and just found a really small note saying that my own eyelid was twitching as well. I mean, misery loves company and all, but it really isn’t useful outside of that. So I figured I might as well write something more substantive about eyelid twitching, so here it is.

First off, there’s a name for this: myokymia. “Myo-” is the Greek root for “eye,” and “-kymia” means “I’m making up this etymology.” But the name, at least, is for real. They’re also called eyelid “tremors,” as it sounds kind of psycho to have a “twitch,” or worse, a “spasm.” Nobody likes spasms. “Tremors” sounds cooler.

Myokymia is, according to doctors, “a common condition where a few of the muscle fibers of the upper — or more commonly the lower — eyelid contract irregularly. … Myokymia is closely associated with stress, fatigue, lack of sleep and too much caffeine.”

That’s doctorese for, “you’re eyelid’s twitching, moron. Try changing something.”

This doctor says that myokymia is associated with “brainstem neoplasms,” which sounds even cooler than “tremors.” “Brainstem neoplasms” is bound to get people at the office to pay attention when you talk about your problem. But then, the treatment for that includes a “lumbar puncture with examination of cerebrospinal fluid,” so maybe it’s best not to milk the neoplasm idea too far. Especially for a stupid eyelid twitch.

Frankly, when I get The Twitch, I’m not usually stressed out, I am getting as much sleep as ever, sometimes more, and I don’t drink coffee (I even have decaf Coke). Maybe it’s my Evil Plan to Dominate the World, we usually get eye twitches when we do that.

Some people stand by the theory that it is a vitamin deficiency, usually potassium (because someone once heard that potassium has something to do with muscles; we’re still trying to track that one down), and others swear that it’s a B-vitamin deficiency, saying they lose the twitch immediately when they start taking the pills. I have the strong feeling, however, that this is more to do with something that rhymes with the “flacebo effect.” For all of you who want the above remedies to work, I cleverly disguised my opinions about it there.

Treatment: Reduce your stress, get more sleep, nix the coffee, eat more bananas and B-complex pills. Throw in a couple of sugar pills for good measure. Save the cerebrospinal fluid exam for emergencies.

Or, you might just wait for them to go away on their own. Whatever.

I am shocked to see all the eyelid twitchers! My upper left eyelid has been twitching since October. I am currently in the nursing program and I use my eyes a lot. I have been convinced that I have something terrible like a brain tumor or MS. But, I feel a little better after reading this site.

Nice website, I too had a twitch in my right eye as I worked in front of a computer maybe 8-9 hours per day. Definitely a cup of quality coffee in the morning.

That was months ago, and I don’t have the twitch anymore. I feel it was definitely related to stress, I have a different job, still in front of a PC, but a different team leader. I have more freedom in this job, yet definitely more responsibility. But I also drink less coffee and I don’t know if they are related.

I posted about a week ago, I think that my eye has finally stopped twitching, it started to slowly dissipate starting on Saturday and I haven’t noticed it twitch since Tuesday.

It’s just really strange, I actually never stopped drinking my morning coffee…

Since so little is known about this, I’m thinking that It could be some type of virus that makes people’s eyes twich.. yes I’m going off on a wild tangent! It’s probably not a virus, but it would be interesting to find out.

Wow, some crazy comments on this blog…a few crazy people too, aliens, good vs bad things happening..oh my!

Here’s my take, about 21 years old I moved a heavy couch alone, as I was doing it, my left eyelid corner started twitching. As I recall, it went away in a couple of days.

Fast forward a few years and for maybe a day tops an occasional twitch, nothing bad, just wierd.

Now, at 32, I google this condition because it’s been twitching for 3 days now. Never has it been this bad. Hope it ends soon though because it is downright annoying and bothersome. If I find a cure, I’ll be sure to let you guys know! =)

I’ve read almost all these post and I’m most inclinded to be with the last post from Aaron. I’ve carried this eye twitching “thing” around for years now. It comes and goes with no notice or warning. Normally I’ll get it a couple times a year, it last for a week or two, sometimes three and then suddenly it’s gone. Now I don’t drink much coffee at all, I can’t say that I feel all that stressed but I do stare at a comp screen all day. I used to work in carpet years ago and damaged muscle tissues and nerve ends in my lower back, well like on a regular basis. At first the twitching started in both calfs, 20-30 different spots on each calf, just steadly twiching. I’ve had to live with this daily for 20 years now. Its sitting there twiching as I type this actually. Anyway, my point is, it would be interesting to know how many of the twichers out there have in the past hurt themselves from lifting heavey items or, how many woman that have it have given birth. It would not surprise me to learn that there is a connection between the twiching and damaged nevre ends at the lower back at the spine connections. Either way, its comforting to know that this is not rare to me and that i might have some uncureable thing :-)

My lower left eyelid has been twitching intermittently for a week now. I notice it more often when I’m at work (I’m a nurse). I work weekend nights and have a two year old, so I don’t sleep from Friday to Saturday and my husband has to be at work by 8am on Monday, so I don’t sleep from Sunday when I get up for work ’til Monday 10:30pm. I drink a lot of caffeine and my diet is really bad. Thanks for all the postings. I will be changing by diet and caffeine habits, as for sleep, it will not improve until I get off my work schedule.

it seems that twitchers are being ignored by the medical community. if enough are interested (and you really get thousands per day) I propose a research questionnaire to post on your site- basic questions (I’m a medical researcher by the way) followed by analysis and publication.

    Tom:

I’m game. What do you suggest? I am presuming you have questions that could be valuable to make some medical conclusions. Do you have a web page suggestion? A forum-type page, a poll-type page, or a simple questionnaire form that would automatically send email with the results to a certain address?

I think this problem is caused by a virus. I am a healthy 36yo and recently had a terribly bad virus that lasted almost a month. Ever since, I have had invuluntary muscle spasms all over my body, the most recent being my lower eyelid.

Well I was thinking I was the only human being with this eye twitching thing, i am kind of relief that is not true, I have a doctor’s appointment in a couple of days but on the phone I mentioned it and my doc said stress and a potassium test.

I have been drinking a lot of coffee (never used to it before)

I’ll update after I come back from the doc.

I’m really glad you posted this. I’ve been doing a lot of searching and finally found this. I haven’t read through the whole thing but the first few blogs gave me an idea of what it “may” be (who really knows). I’ve always heard the superstition that if your eye is jumping that means someone is going to make you mad. If that’s the case I’ve been mad for about 2 weeks now. Anyway, may be a long shot but I think mine is caffenine . I started these new diet pills and I looked back at the calendar after reading some of your first entries. I’ve been taking the pills about two weeks and thats about how long its been since my eye started twitching. Thanks

    Hello everybody,

This site has been very interesting for me this problem does worry me and I would like to get to the bottom of this anways my problem started off with my top right eyelid twitching for about a month which than led to my top left eyelid twitching. These both have been twitching now for over a month. All I can do to help everyone is bring up these factors which I think might have caused this problem because of personal changes ive made in my life very prior to this problem and what has been brought up in this site by other people:Low carb diet same time it started,Taking multivtamin for the first time maybe triggering something ive never had in my body, Stress but normal level, Very itchy eyes normal, I do stare at computer alot,Started drinking tea alot, And finally rubbing my eyes alot maybe ive damaged some tissue in my eyelids. Those are my thoghts people. I really hope this isnt anything serious because there are so many of us with this problem. Good luck everbody

Bruce and Tom, you guys are probably onto something that needs to be taken seriously in the medical community. It really would be easy, just find a university w/a few grad students willing to compile a large data set of eye twitchers. Come up with a list of questions and see if the majority is caused by 1. stress 2. nerve injuriy to back or other parts of body 3. allergies, etc.

To follow up on my case, after about 5 days it stopped. Hasn’t twitched since. So what did I try? Believe it or not, eye allergy medicines. I took Alocril eye drops for the eye itch and Tobradex eye oitment for eye repair due to ocular inflammation of the eyelid(allergies are bad here in Oklahoma). It contains an anti-bacteria and a steroid to heal. Try the combo from your doctor and see if it helps. It’s worth a try!

    Good luck to you guys.

i just read your last comment and note that Aaron posted his a 3:09 am. Looks like he is not getting enough sleep, unless he sleeps all day. I get the twitches from time to time. Lasting a few days. I have slight allergies, and it is of course, allergy season with high amounts of tree pollen, etc. I usually attribute my twitch to using a lot of eye drops at this time of the year. I had the right upper lid twitch three days ago, lasting for two days, and today and am a victim of an intestinal virus, but the twitch is gone. Hmmmmm, I don’t know if that’s a twitch is a precursor to a virus or not.

Okay, On the other possible causes, let me just say that I NEVER once got an eye twitch with the following:

    1. stress (My husband died of cancer)
    2. lack of sleep (again, My husband died of cancer)
    3. Caffeine (I love coffee and tea)

    so, there’s my story.

I think this problem is virus related. I too had an intestinal virus that is now gone (and so is my lower eyelid twitch). Another thing I did that may have helped: I wetted a small towel with steaming hot water and placed it over my eye. Supposedly if you have a clogged duct, this method may clear it.

I guess the research should begin here. I’ve been getting the dreaded twitch off and on over the years. Once it starts it really hangs on. My upper right eyelid will twitch at random intervals for a few seconds at a time to several minutes and then it will just stop.

For the record, my sleep patterns, stress level, eating habits and caffeine usage are all consistently B-A-D!

I find that the the only thing that seems to bring on a bout of twitching is regular use of one-a-day type multivitamins. I happened to mention this to a few people who insisted I was crazy since vitamins are good for you. Well, they make my eye twitch and B complex vitamins make me nauseated. Sadly however, I stopped taking the vitamins two months ago and yet the twitch persists which is why I finally Googled it.

My chiropractor insists that the multivitamins are to blame because they’re synthetic and the dosages aren’t balanced. But of course he has a lovely organic and well measured vitamin blend for sale if I’m interested.

I will be happy to host a forum if one has not been created already.

    Thanks all!
    Val

    Hi there!

I was an upper left eyelid twitcher for several months. After doing much research and reading all the comments on this page, I have changed my lifestyle a bit, and the twitching has stopped. I am not a doctor, but here is what I suggest:

    * I think that the twitching increased when I had my colds, it may be linked to a virus, etc. So keeping your immune system in top shape is important!

    * I cut back on caffeine A LOT. I stopped drinking coffee (for now) and am watching my sugar intake, just in case.

    * I am taking B supplement vitamins in addition to eating a banana every other day. Potassium is good for you!

    * Stress reduction– I am taking yoga, and making sure that I don’t let things get to me. Having a supportive spouse really helps!

    * WATER! – This is essential. I noticed a difference almost right away by drinking 4 glasses of water a day. I have done a lot of research and water intoxication is rare, so drink up!!

These are my suggestions. It’s really more of a lifestyle change, as well. I even cut back on my fast food intake. I am sure that your diet (and blood pressure, etc) plays a roll.

    Good luck to you all!
    -Wanda

My Memorial Day weekend got ruined by a stomach flu, which of course is not a flu but gastroenteritis — a condition that can be brought about by either bacteria, a virus, or parasites. Together with it, my lower left eyelid strted to twitch. It’s been 5 days now and the twitching goes on, even though my hedache and gut ache have subsided. I am definitely inclined to think it’s a virus what causes the twitching. I hope it goes away when the virus clears completely.

I find it interesting that some have mentioned the USE of multivitamins as being a cause. I am not really stressed, usually get enough sleep, drink plenty of water, and drink no caffiene. The only thing that’s changed recently is I’ve started using a daily multivitamin, and now that y’all mention it, that would be right around when the (right upper eyelid) twitching started. Many times a day every day.

I just recently got this eye twitching business going on on my upper left eyelid, it’s driving me insane! The thing is that I don’t have stress…I rarely do, I have tons of sleep (approx. 9 hours) and I don’t drink coffee or anything with caffeine. When I look up close in front of a mirror, I can actually see my eyelid twitching, it’s soo annoying! I’ll try eating bananas…if my eye does stop twitching, I will post again.

Well, fellow twitchers…..they say confessing the problem is step one to solving it. I am a twitchaholic and yes, it drives me nuts. All the above cured nothing for me. Maybe I’ll try water next….drowning in the bathtub or crocodile tears. At least laughing at ourselves is fun and puts things into perspective. The placebo cure could make millions and surely there is a TV sitcom here somewhere. 😉

Hi, I am 27 and have had an upper eyelid twitch off and on since I was 17. When it started I was under a lot of stress with school and work. I freaked out a bit and then felt at ease once I found out that the same thing happens to my father from time to time as well and usually resolves itself in a few weeks. I fell upon this site after not having the twitch for a couple years and decided to investigate. I am under tons of stress now over the past month so now I am super sure that it is related to stressful times. So I am just going to try some meditation, extra sleep and a healthier diet. Good luck all :)

To all the twitchers out there,

My Left Upper Eye Lid has been twitching for about 2 weeks now and it has been driving me crazy!!! I have been really worried until I found this website as it explains all the possible contributing factors, which are occuring in my life at present!!! I have been drinking heaps of coke and coffee (caffeine), not sleeping well, work on a computer most of the day and have not eaten a bannana in 6 months!!! I used to eat a handful of banana’s a week and becasue of the drought we had up in Oueensland (Australia) all the bananas had been lost and they are like $12 per kilo now. So I think the main cause of eyelid twitching is potassium deficency as my shoulder muscle is also twiching on occassion. Good sources of potassium include:

    Apricots
    Artichokes
    Avocados
    Bananas
    Cantaloupe
    Cod
    Dates
Dry beans (i.e. kidney beans and navy beans)
    Figs
    Flounder
    Greens
    Honeydew melons
    Kiwi
    Lentils
    Nuts
    Oranges
    Peaches
    Potatoes
    Prunes
    Pumpkins
    Raisins
    Salmon
    Sardines
    Potassium-based salt replacements
    Tomatoes
    Watermelons
    Foods Moderate in Potassium
    Apples
    Broccoli
    Brussels sprouts
    Beets
    Carrots
    Celery
    Cherries
    Eggplant
    Mango
    Mushrooms
    Okra
    Peaches
    Pears
    Peanut butter
    Plums
    Peppers

I hope this helps all you twitchers out there! If not please consult your doctor or ophthalmoogist for further testing to rule out anything neurological.

    Kind Regards,

    Carl

Right lower eyelid on and off over the years for short periods of time and I never really thought about it, but recently it went on for a week (a friend watching the the house while on honeymoon/vacation reset all clocks to the correct time and made me late for work when i was the opener and it started…need that groggily waking up and initially thinking i’m late adrenaline in the morning. Only a morning person when I know I can go back to bed anytime I choose)
Just started again tonight after a political ‘discussion’with someone I don’t know. I hope it’s not a week again!!
I would have to say stress is a relative factor. Diet is a possibility I’ll look into, but I doubt to be the only factor. It seems to be more prolonged as I get older. AAAACCKK how annoying! Now everybody will be able to tell the instant I get pissed (angry) before I realize nor have had time to think and decide if it’s something worth being angry about.
Like someone here said …perhaps yoga or maybe a cookout with friends on the river or maybe just the river by myself with some art supplies and my mind. yep I think that’s the ticket. twitching as I write and signing off with no signs of it fading 5 hours later.

I am convinced eyelid twitching is related to the use of insecticides — in air, on food, etc. Lots of water and any kind of diet/exercise that helps the body get rid of toxins would therefore be helpful. Avoiding insecticides is better. Just my two cents.

My tremors/twitching occure in the little puffy area right under my right eyelid. It has been going on for a couple of months now and drives me freakin crazy. I never know when it’s going to happen or for how long. I can look in the mirror when it happens and see that area under the eye twitching like all get out. I’m assuming that my problem is like all of yours. If it is I guess I’m in the club. We ought to have a convention someday. Damn tremors!

Hi there fellow twitchers…there seems to be an aweful lot of upperleft twitchers out there like my self. My twitching has been going on for a month now, it happens every few minutes & drives me crazy…..I think it may be strass & eyestrain related. On a bad night I get off to sleep with one of those weird looking eye things on (that block out the light) just to keep my eye lid firmly tucked into place because its so annoying when its jumping around. I had the problem a couple of years ago, during a stressful time, & both eyes twitched, only one twitched horizontally the other vertically!!! Luckily the right eye lid is behaving this time. Hope all you lot get over it soon.

Hey People, Ive been vegetarian for around 10 years now. I’m a 26 year old male who considers himself to be in good health. I’ve recently had some problems with anxiety, as probably many of us have. I have switched from full time work as an electrician to full time study as an audio engineer which is most probably the cause of anxiety, its not a problem any more though. I’ve had many experiences with many things legal and illegal as have many other people. I’ve had the right upper eyelid twitch for as long as I can remember. Sometimes Its more severe than other times but it has always been there, even as a child in my early school years right through to this very day. Ive been told by many people many different “apparent” causes but none of them have truned out to be true. I like to think of people like us “twitchies” as humans who use more of their brain. Were not better than anyone else, nor are we some form of super human race, but just stop and think about how fast your brain processes information and how much of that information is being processed at the time of twitching. synapses are fireing like crazy up there trying to punch that information in and process it in real time, real time for our brains is the speed of light. Next time your eyelid twitches just think of it as a blow off valve for your turbo charged brain! I’m finished trying to find out the “medical” cause, as it only seems to happen when I think too much.

I’m an upper left twitcher too. It’s been 5 or so weeks now since the twitching started occurring daily, at seemingly random times for a few seconds each time. I had been stressed until a week or so ago with a fairly hectic uni semester, plus my boyfriend went away 6 weeks ago for a 3 month trip, PLUS there was a cyclone in North Queensland earlier this year that destroyed all the banana plantations, so bananas are like $12/kilo these days making them unaffordable… After reading all those posts I’m starting to think it’s not a brain tumor after all! Hooray! Funny thing is, I read the post that said opthamologists recommend taking frequent breaks from looking at the computer screen and focusing on a distant object, tried it, and my eyelid immediately started twitching! I have been to the optometrist who tested for retinal detachment but said there were no signs of any damage. I don’t drink coffee and I make sure I get about 8 hours sleep almost every night but I have probably been eating more junk food lately. So many possibilities! Can’t wait for the study results!!!

Its been 1 & 1/2 weeks since I posted my last message & my left upper was twitching furiously almost non stop all day, well my stress & eye strain levels subsided greatly since then & the twitching is down almost 100%, just thought it might give some of you hope….dont cut your eyelids off, or bash them to a pulp with police battens, as I read in some of the above (if you didnt laugh you’d cry)there is hope yet!!!

    Hello,

I have had a twitch under my left eyelid for 3 months. The diagnosis that has made most sense to me is hemifacial spasm. I’ve been to a chinese herablist/acupuncturist – was told I had liver wind from stress, anger, which made sense based on what I was experiencing at the time. However the acupuncture and herbs did not bring relief. I went to a kinesiologist who test that my 7th cranial nerve was out and he has done some adjustments. I don’t know if his adjustments actually work – the twitch has begun to fade on its own and is now down to a tremour. His diagnosis was the best though. Made most sense to me and put me on to massage. I find this is the best – just massaging the area can provide complete relief for a few hours. I went for one session to a Reiki guy and had the same result. In my case, I think the origin of the think was that I was taking for months prior to it an over the counter sleep medication. Basically Dramamine. Turns out the active ingredient is a central nervous system depressor. The chiropractor told me the C7 cranial nerve is hyperactive/twitching because of the overall attempt to suppress it. This makes a great deal of sense to me. I was feeling very bad cognitively before the twitch happened and took Lunesta to help my sleep – the sleep aid had worn off. This was the worst thing to do. Lunesta is another CNS depressor. Both these products are “downers”, as the druggies say. Hopefully some aspect of my experience will tip you off with your own difficulties, and the other participants in this forum have helped me – at least in feeling not so alone with such an odd and seemingly anti-social complaint. Good luck!

    hi,
i too am have left-eye twitching badly for last 2 days, but only during working hrs, that too early in the morning. maybe i am having them more often but too distracted to notice.
ive been more active , thinking more than usu.& getting less than usual sleep last few days, so its the excitement which is probably manifesting itself.hopefully.
nice to know that so many co-twitchers exist in the world! makes the world a really small place to live in!

I overworked myself for a month, and then my right eyelid started twitching. It bothers me to have this evil twitch come on when I least expect it. I look haggard, and I feel that my eye make up may have contributed to it. I also wonder if this twitch can be cured by more sleep. Doesn’t seem so cause i slept for two days straight this week and I am still twitching. I am going to try tonic/iron medicine and see if I can get back to normal. I hate being the evil twin, and I don’t even have a twin.

If it doesnot stop by next week, I am trying the wet grass.

OK, my left lower eyelid has been twitching for 2 months now. My last posting was in May. I have been unsuccessful in changing my diet and stress levels. My friend told me to try a benadryl for the twitching-this works for her. I will try it this morning and keep everyone posted.

I read all of the possible causes. I was cleaning with bleach the day the twitch started and today I was painting. Half way through the job, my lower eyelid started twitching again. I used saline spray and a decongestant to stop it the first day, and after reading these blogs and others, I ran for medicated eyedrops. Sure enough, the minute I dropped them into my eye, the twitch stopped. I drink a ton of water and take a multivitamin. I have been under stress and got only 4 hours of sleep last night. I suspect my eye and/or nasal passages were irritated in both cases.

    Dear ETC Pres:

What a great idea! A club for a medical condition!

My right upper eyelid has been twitching for about 10 days. It is SOOOOO annoying. Bet people think I’m giving them dirty looks? I don’t know (or care) LOL. It twitches when I try to sleep, play games on my home computer, and when I watch TV. I work on a computer all day so of course it’s twitching right now.

Are riches really headed my way cause I’m twitching in the right eye? IF SO: I’m sorry I complained! When I actually get the $$$, I am willing to twitch for old times sake!

Thanks for this site. I enjoyed the other comments. Twitchers are comedically gifted. {{{Twitch, Twitch}}}!

I am glad that I am not a freak!! Under my left eye has been twitching for about a month now, but I am in nursing school and my best friends are chocolate, coca cola, and coffee!!! That’s not to mention the long STRESSFUL hours that I keep. I just thought I was going crazy and my eyelid was the first sign!!They do not teach us any of the aabnorms like eye twitch in nursing school, unless it is from a side effect from a medication, and I am definetly not on anything. Thanks for the helpful info.

Its called Herbal Nerve I found it at Shoppers drugmart, its a life brand product I think. Its for stress headaches. If i take it every 4 hours or so its keeping the eye twitch at bay. Ive also increased my water consumption a little. Try it.. let me know if it helps you.

My right upper eyelid has been twitching for almost 2 weeks. I have started taking a multivitamin and
calcium supplements because I’m allergic to dairy, and my assessment of my diet found that apart from an occasional bite of cheese (which makes me sick) or a piece of chocolate eaten in the dark (which also makes me sick) my diet is almost completely free of calcium.

I hope that the extra vitamins and minerals kick in soon, because the twitching is driving me insane. Insane!!

I have read almost all your comments and isn’t it strange that the majority of these posts happen to occur in the left eye? I to, am experiencing episodes of twitching. The first time occured almost 3 months ago for about a month every single day. Then one day it vanished. About a week ago, the dreaded twitching resumed. Although not painful or up to this point, noticed by others (unless i tell them its occurring) it is a major pain in the a**!!! Especially in professional situations. There has to be more to this strange phenonmenon besided lack of sleep, vitamin deficientcy, blah blah. When the first episode stopped, i did not change anything w/ my lifestyle. I honestly feel that there is something to -the left side majority —-does anyone w/ medical expertise know why?

Okay my upper eyelid twitch came after my 1 yr old found me on the floor watching TV and threw one of my shoes at my head. It hurt so bad that I almost started crying. After that my eye has been spazing out. NON STOP!!!!!!!!

Wow! For the person who had a shoe thrown at their head which caused eyelid twitching – can you say MRI?? Holy crap!

Anyway, I was just doing a search because my eyelid has been going nuts for a month, now. I had never heard of it before it happened to me (every so often, but not on and off all day for weeks on end!).

This site has given me tips no one else has, even though I understand it was not for eye twitchers but now has become “the source”!!

I’m a wild & crazy kind of gal. So I think I will try eye drops. Just crazy enough to work!

Ok the upper eye lid twitching has been going on for about 4-5 days now, and has gradually gotten worse over the past day. I remember having a slight eye twitch in the past, but it quickly just went away on its own after a day.

Coming to this site has shocked me that so many have the problem. Here is my scenario.

(1)5 weeks ago I hurt my back doing martial arts…3 visits to the chiropractor & the back still slightly hurts but I’m getting by with it.

    (2) I ve been taking Creatine Monohydrate for about 5 days, along with L Glutamine & whey protein. Which you are required to drink alot of water…almost a gallon a day…which makes you pee about 10 times a day

(3)I’ve been a little stressed about a clients website that my team is working on

I am in a bit of a predicament now, because I question all of the above remedies thinking…(a)have I been peeing out all of my nutrients/vitamins etc (b) have I been staring at the computer screen more than I normally do? (c) does the lower back pain have something to do with it (pinched nerve or whatnot).

Oh, and by the way, I eat bananas like they are going out of style, so I know that cannot be the case. (by the way brocolli has more Potassium than bananas!)

Someone should do some sort of statistical analysis of all the above posts to see the % of common symptoms vs habits or something.

My bottom left eyelid twitched for years, sometimes the right eye also. I was taken off of Pravachol and switched to Pravastatin (for cholesterol) because of the insurance coverage. I started to take Potassium Gluconate 595 MG from CVS. I also tried to get more rest. The spasms stopped about 3 weeks ago. I don’t know if they’ll be back but it has been wonderful for the relief.

Could this mysterious eye twitching be from more squinting than usual? My 14 year old daughter is going crazy with eye twitches. She has been involved in lots of “outdoor activities” (with NO SUNGLASSES) as of late and I’m wondering about the excess squinting?????? Could that be a common denominator with anyone else??

    Hello,
I posted before about my left side twitch coming down in intensity, mainly due to seeing various alternative practitioners. I’m now with a chiropractor who does kinesiology and has test that my smile muscle is out (my left eyelid, lower, is twitching). He’s giving me adjustments, various nutritional supplements, and specifically Cataplex G from Standard Process, for the twitch. Sure enough the twitch started reducing in intensity. I got lazy, then, seeing that it was fading out (after months of being there); ran out of the Cataplex G and did not go back to get more from him. The twitch started to intensify again. So there you have it. I’m back on the Cataplex G now and its helping already (day 2 of the return). Just thought it might help someone else.

    Good luck,

    Hnif

My right eyelid has been twitching for 2 weeks! I rarely feel it but it’s embarassing. It looks as if I have a pulse on my eyelid. It twitches non-stop. Now I am all paranoid after reading several articles on the internet. I’m scared it won’t subside or it may be a underlying condition.

Unbelievable! But so helpful. I appreciate everyone’s input. After reading all the comments, my problem could be any of the above. 13 year sufferer / update.

I have mentioned previously my every 3 months Botox treatment to cure it, it didn’t, but the Drs persevered just to show they had my best interests at heart. About 8 months ago I read on the internet about Keratitus, a mildly painful inflammation of the inner eyelid folds common to dogs, humans can get it too, the dog-ointment contains cyclosporene [the active drug] I’m now on this, to date no real improvement but it reduced the blinking and twitching. After about 4 months of 3 times a day doses, I got fed up and stopped and within a week it returned and it was back to zero-land. I sort of know that in my case its a virus infection of the [24] tear glands [not to be confused with 2-tear-ducts. You have 24 tear glands and they can produce on their own – twitches, facial tremors, and tics and grimaces. I am bathing my inner eyelids with hot/warm water and Johnsons Baby Shampoo, but nothing to shout about. In my eyes-mind I think all my tear glands need a good old fashioned squeeze, a clear out of old bacteria, old soap / detergent dirt, but were do you find the right person “Who will squeeze them clean for me gently”?, bear in mind these glands are on the inner eye-lids. I’m now chronic and some days confined to the house and no cure in the offering, so much for modern medicine. RW.

I last posted a comment back in March. I had twitching in my left eye for MONTHS! Warm compresses seemed to help, but the twitching continued on for so long I thought it would never end. It finally did, but once in a while it tries to start up. When it was at it’s worse, it would always go spastic when I yawned!

So many of the comments are about caffeine, vitamins, sleep, stress, etc. My life has been pretty constant–little caffeine, a daily vitamin, always a lack of sleep and lots of stress! Why did it start? Why did it go away? Who knows? All I can say is I’m glad it’s gone, and I hope it doesn’t come back!

If anyone else tries warm compresses and it helps, let me know.

OK, my lower right eye twitching started about 3 months after ATTEMPTING LASIK. I say say attempted, because suction was lost while the doctor was trying to create the corneal flap and had to stop after only minimally cutting into my cornea.

It’s been 6 months and I have been too squeemish to re-attempt LASIK. My eyelid continues to twitch and I’ve sort of gotten use to it. It happens throughout the day, from morning till night.

    I thinks it’s time I should consult a doctor.

Hello all I just found this blog. I have had eye twitching as a problem for a while off and on. It is so annoying more then anything. Recently I have changed my lifestyle slowly but surely. First off I quit smoking, second no fast food. It was so hard but once you start to feel so much better it’s great.
    Anyways heres my two-cents..
Cleanse your body!! I recently have done this cleanse and trust me it works amazing!
Drink at least 8, 6-8 oz. glasses of purified/filtered water a day
    Eat healthy (greens, fruits)
    take daily vitamin like centrum!
Reduce stress by learning ninjitsu or anything active!!
Reduce smoking.. (quit!) I know it’s hard but if I can do it you can!
    reduce alcohol consumption

http://www.drnatura.com Thats the link for the cleanse

(You can buy it on ebay for a bit cheaper)

But read the web page! I found the parasite part to be very interesting… I think they are also a major problem.

While i hate the fact i also have THE TWITCH, i am almost glad that i did just so i could see this site. It’s seriously pretty funny. If computers are the cause then its probably not good that i have been staring at this forever reading all the comments.. but i don’t believ it is computers. Everyone tells me its stress… its been happening for 2 months now and now i can’t remember if i even was stressed or if ppl just talked me into thinking that i am. Anyhow.. i have suspicions about the vertebrae.. i think perhaps there is a nerve somewhere in the neck that has pressure on it from the spine.. well in my case anyway, i have pretty bad posture. Cheers guys, hope someone finally comes across this site with the answer. Until then, damn THE TWITCH is annoying.

I got the classic left upper eye twitch, especially when I sneeze yawn or stretch. It’s amazing that these things trigger it for so many people.

I just ate an asperin, a mega men vitamin (washed down with an apple juice) – and the twitching has ceased.

Maybe one of the above things helped. Maybe reading about all you other sufferers helped calm my nerves. I don’t know. Glad I visited here.

I do wish I could have just gone to the pharmacy and picked up some “Twitch-B-Gone” pills though. I woulda paid a good $40 for a small bottle of them if they existed and worked.

    Here’s hoping I get a twitchless night out tonight….

Reading a post about 5 back, it reminded me to tell you all [“the gang”] that I tried putting a medium-to-hot, rubber hot-water bottle filled with hot-water directly on top of each of my eyes and forehead with a poor/ moderate result.

But here’s the amazing thing, afterwards I felt HIGHLY ELATED, it shifted my severe depression big time and the good effect lasted for weeks. I suffer badly from depression and am guessing that the 10-15 minutes of intense heat on my forehead-which was transmitted through my forehead to my brain, dispersed all the [old?]brain chemicals that seem to cause depression. I’ve tried it twice and it works. So much so that I’ve lost the blues, the need for tablets [meaning goodbye to Imiprimanine & Prozac] Please mention this to others. On my 2nd trial I put the hot water bottle on the lump just above each ear, this contains a vital hearing – nerve and brain contact. Again it worked. There’s some medical cure here that needs investigating, meaning hot-heat via an hot water bottle DIRECT to the head to quickly cure depression. Bob W.

My upper right eye has been twitcing for a few weeks now. Thats the ANNOYING part. But I have also been dealing with this constant ticking or twitching of the upper left of my mouth for around three years. I believe it was caused by working a swing shift, drinking way too many Monster drinks or any energy drink ,bad diet, Zoloft, Advair and other meds. Maybe its time to quit them all and start from scratch. I don’t know.

    I’m a twitcher. Lower-left lid variety.

It began almost a year ago and went on daily, almost constantly, for months. None of the remedies suggested here helped much.

Caffeine, lack of sleep, and long hours staring at a computer screen (all integral parts of my life) do seem to exacerbate it, but even away from those things it continues.

I was thrilled when, fairly recently, I suddenly realized that it had been a few days since noticed any twitching. More days, then weeks passed, and I thought finally I’m cured!

After about six weeks it started up again. Been twitching for a week solid. (Sigh.)

To add one more speculation to the anecdotal heap, I took SSRI antidepressants for about ten years and the twitching started after I quit. I don’t recall having it before then.

Another twitcher checking in. It is my lower left lid and it has been twitching for about a week now. I’m going f#%king nuts! As with many others, I have been a bit stressed lately and sit in front of a computer as well. Hopefully some minor adjustments will help. Part of my problem was this crazy chic… who I just dumped by the way. Maybe this cleansing act will help me.

    HELLO PEOPLE!

I am an EX-eye twitcher! Yes thats right, “EX”!

I’ve had a twitch in my upper-left eye-lid for about 3+ weeks, and having had a previous twitch a couple of years ago for a week where it went away its self over time, I thought I’d do the same and waited patiently for this twitch to go away by its self too, but to no avail.

I looked at all the possible reasons, lack of sleep, too much caffine, over-stressed. But I couldn’t tick the box for any of these, apart from maybe slightly abit stressed. I mean, I had plentliful amounts of sleep seeing as im on summer holdiays, and I hardly ever drink coffee or caffine substances I hate fizzy drinks especially coke-cola.

So therefore, I knew there was a much deeper meaning towards my twitching. I did abit of research on-line and most significantly THIS web-site, and found out other possible reasons could be lack of magnesium and calcium.

I admitted to myself that I didn’t drink enough milk as I really should do (for the calcium), and can’t even remember the last time I ate food where I even cared whether there was magnesium in it or not.

So I instantly went on google and searched for foods with high magnesium content. The highest thing I found that I also had at home with alot of magnesium in was ALMONDS. The natural raw nuts of Almonds, we had a packet of them and I just ate them like you would do with a packet of crisps (apart from this time, you feel better than you would eating crisps because you know that these almonds are actually doing GOOD for you, as opposed to those fried fatty pieces of sh**). After a good 20 or so I put the packet down and drank some milk and a cup of multi-vitamin juice just in case I was also slightly lacking some essential vitamins.

The next day I had a big cereal with lots and lots of milk and even put almonds in my cereal.

Generally there was an annoyingly tedious twitch that would occur every time I slightly lowered my eyes to look at something and basically whenever it felt like it. But I must admit, I noticed a difference after my cereal breakfast that day. It slowed down alot and was noticeably less frequent. I continued to snack on a couple of almonds here and there between lunch etc that day and drank my multi-vitamin juice along with it.

And guess what happened the next day when I woke up?! Yep, THE TWITCHING STOPPED FOR GOOD!!

Now maybe this is all coincidence and has nothing to do with almonds or milk or vitamin/nutrients deficiency, but I’ll let my story do the talking and you to build your own conclusions from it. But all I can say is, “The proof is in the (almond) pudding”.

I really hope my experience helps everyone out there with the same problem and solves it for them too.

If so, I would really like to hear from you, so please email me or write on this website and hopefully i’ll see it.

    Best of luck everyone,

    Harpal.

    P.S

I forgot to mention that another benefit that may have been linked with my diet of increased magneisum and calcium, is that I feel alot less stressed than I used to, especially after the eye twitching stopped.

Great to know I am not alone with my eye twitch. I have from time to time upper left eye twitching and recently my upper right eyelid too. After reading comments I must agree water is the key. I drink about 3 to 4 cups of coffee a day, caffiene free soda, but not much water. Stress and not enough sleep or a virus also explain possible reasons. I believe allergies may also play a role. I am in the midwest and let me say pollen is out of control this time of year, I use allergy medicine to help but sometimes its not enough. I also wonder if changes in diet play a role. I recently BEGAN eating bananas daily just to eat better, I will try not eating them and see what happens. Also being single and lazy, I began buying premade chocolate milk at the grocery store. I notice that this milk has a 2 month shelf life when checking the expiration date, YIKES!!! I thought nothing of it at first, but now??? Is it possible that all the chemicals, harmones and preservatives in our foods contribute as well???

I am a fellow twitcher and it is making me crazy. I was so happy to google and find this website. I cant believe that there are so many of us TWITCHERS. Mine is an annoying right side upper lid twitch that has been going strong for 3 weeks now. I never had this happen before and I cant stand it. I do not drink coffee, am not really stressed more than usual but I do eat alot of chocolate. I am willing to try anything, almonds, milk, calcium, potassium anthing to make this go away!! Thanks for sharing and please, keep in touch…!

I am a fellow twitcher also. First it was my lower left eyelid that started twitching and it did that for a month
every single day; many times a day. It would come in cycles. It would twitch fast awhile then gradually slow down then stop. Then after about 10 minutes or less, it would start this cycle all over again. Some days it wouldn’t do it so much, then other days it would go through that same cycle practically all day. So after a month it totally stopped. Then guess what?? After a day or so, my upper right eyelid (practically my eyebrow) started twitching!! It’s just a strong single twitch that happens at least once or twice an hour all day. This all is getting on my nerves really, really bad. Today I went and bought some almonds, milk, and magnesium pills. I have started taking them, but I haven’t noticed a difference yet. Hopefully this will help me. If not, I don’t know what to do. I do spend a lot of time on my computer and I had started exercising about a month and a half ago. I don’t know if either of these are the causes. I have been using my computer since ’99. I really hope this treatment will help me. I can’t go through this much longer. I don’t know why this twitching has started and I will be glad when it stops. Hopefully I won’t have to go through this another month like with the previous twitching.

    Hello fellow twitchers,

I have been twitching now for about 5 years off and on. It started with the eyes upper and lower, then it spread to the cheeks and even my neck. Now I have twitches all over sporadically. Sometimes it will be on one arm for a day or two, then it will switch to the other arm, or my leg, or my back, shoulder, everywhere. I have even had twitches in my fanny. It drives me bananas. It normally happens when I am stressed or don’t get enough rest. It comes and goes. Right now I have been twitching wherever off and on for about 2 weeks. Today it is in my lower right eyelid. The eye twitch is the most irritating being that I do stare at a computer screen for 8 hrs a day 5 days a week. And I always think people can see it when they look at me, but no one ever says anything if they do see it. I am really relieved to find this site. I really thought this was the onset of MS or something. Someone before also mentioned a subtle itch or irritation all over. I get that too. I have it right now. I want to just unzip my skin with the nerves attached and set the nerves and skin to the side until they get it together. Oh yeah, almost forgot to ask. I also have high blood pressure. Not all the time, but when it’s up it’s up. I have also noticed that if my pressure spikes it triggers the twitches as well, so I know that is connected. Has anyone else experienced a connection between the two? If I have missed it in a previous post let me know. I believe that it is a nervous system issue. It seems as if it depends on the person what the twitches are triggered by. But there is always a trigger, or combination of triggers. I guess us twitchers have sensitive nerves.

Hi fellow twitchers! Mine started soon after starting back to work after 3 years time off due to illness’s. I also started on a Calcium/Magn./Vit.D suppliment around the same time so for those who suggest it is a defiency, it’s not in my case. However, after reading all of these posts…well, most of them! I have realized that the twitching could be from different things with each of us. Some could be related to magn. deficiency, some from lack of water. But, one thing that we all have in common is every day stress and computers…so, I suspect that it is stress for me and my new strenuous job. I also drink a ton of water but, since starting the new job, haven’t been able to get it all in…..I will be trying to drink more water and stick with my suppliments. One more thing. I think that if you take a calcium/magn. suppliment, you could then get a potassium deficiency? That might be something to check out as well. I think it is important to take your vitamins with the right balance or you could cause a deficiency in another. Just my opinion from research I have done recently. Anyways, good luck everyone on finding your own cure! This sucks! Upward and onward!!!!

I have always had a cup of coffee in the morning and eat pretty balanced meals. I had significant amount of stress these past 3 months and boom, my left lower eyelid began twitching. About the same time as the stress, my husband began having problems sleeping because of restless leg syndrome which kept me awake too. So, add lack of sleep to my stress.I’m going to work on relaxation and drugs for my husband! I’ll let you know if my annoying twitches go away as a result. Oh, allergies are really bad so that could be a factor as well.

The twitches are driving me up the wall. This has been going on for about a month now. I notice this only when i’m having problems with my sinuses. I’ve had constant drainage and I can’t stand it. It is the most annoying thing in the world. I think mine is more sinus related than stress or lack of sleep. But I wont it to stop…like right now!!

A few months ago I had twitches in my lower left lid. Then it switched to my upper left lid, completely stopping in the lower one. I stopped eating Splenda, that was the only thing I could tell I was doing any different than before. About a week later, the twitching stopped.

Now 2 weeks ago, my bottom inner right one has started up! The total other side. I’m not eating Splenda, I hardly have any caffeine, I’ve taken vitamins for years, and I’m a vegetarian. Nothing is different in my life. But I am getting married in a month and a half, so stress is the only thing I can contribute it to. It’s very embarassing and I hate it.

I have eye tremors too! It’s been going on for about 2 days. I have had this in the past too. I asked my dad about it tonight and he says that he gets it every once in a while too which leads me to believe it’s hereditary. How’s that for a new theory!

Anyway, to my fellow eye twitchers, did any of you have a problem with watering eye before the twitching started? My eye would water up for several days and then the twitching started.

    Hi Amy,
I am a fellow eyelid twitcher – upper left to be exact. And I was just mentioning to my husband how right before this started a couple weeks ago my eye wouldn’t stop watering and was really itchy. I have also have had more stress at work , have had probs with anxiety and could probably eat better. I am guessing nutrition has a HUGE thing to do… gonna go to a naturopathic doctor . But I definitely had the eye watering!

What a great site. I’m glad to know I’m not the ONLY ONE. Upper left lid twitches for 10 or so seconds, then goes away. Happens often during the day, but I suspect I don’t always notice it. Been going on since June. I can “make” it happen by blinking hard a few times. Found that out when I tried to find the causes. Not overly stressed, have one cup of java in the morning and I eat well. After reading here I think I’ll try some Mega Men vitamins to see what happens (plus the name is really funny). We’ll see… this happened a few years ago and it suddenly stopped. Anyway, thanks for the helpful and sometimes humorous info.

It’s the left upper eye that quivers. What a great website here. Tonight I read up on eyes and eyballs in this old Rodale nutrition book and he talked about calcium deficiencies, eating sunflower seeds, sleeping without a pillow so that blood can flow better to your head. I have concluded it has to do with stress and coffee and not eating bananas and neglecting to take calcium and not wearing protective eye gear when scraping the house a few weeks ago and getting chips in my eye and who knows what. I have a broken vessel in the eye which is slowly improving after all of this irritation.

It’s amazing how many people have these eye quivers.

Same problem as everyone else it seems. Upper left lid, twitching constantly. I work out weekly, eat well, and generally not too stressed. Lately I haven’t been getting the best night sleeps and work has been more hectic. Sounds pretty text book case of the dreaded eye twitch. I’m going to go to bed super early a couple nights in a row and see if that does the trick. I’ll try bananas and vitamin B as well and give an update in a week.

This website is like the Eye Twitchers Anonymous page…

“Hi my name is Jon, and I’m an eye twitcher.”

After years of twitching, the twitching stopped! Now into eighth year of retirement, its back!
Over the years I’ve tried all the prescribed remedies to no avail. My thought is the cause is viral, but who really knows?
Too bad the twitches aren’t rhythmic so a new dance called the Twitch would sweep the world…….Let’s twitch again like we did last summer, etc.

This is day 4 of my twitch and I am wondering if I’m going completey in sane. The funny thing is…I work for an eye doctor but afraid to say anything…don’t want them to be inspeciting me…LOL. I have to admit that yes, I am under some stress and I do lack sleep (I’m a MOM after all and we never get enough.) I drink the lite caffinated coffee and haven’t had this problem in a long, long time. I will eat a banana when I get home and take some vitamin B…hopefully my eye will be better by tomorrow. One can only hope. Thanks for bearing with my whining.

I think I got my twitching from my wife. Right after we got divorced it started. I was just so stressed out from all thoses court room hearings, it lasted one whole year of torment. And now I’m thrown back into the singles scene where I have to start all over trying to meet women in bars and the internet. All they always want is sex, I can’t take it anymore. How many times a night do they expect a guy to do it. I can’t keep up no further, I’m so exhausted. Week after week more women aproach me on line asking to me up with them, and there are too many. Make it stop!!!!

Yes, I’m back….(see Oct.4, 2006) I went home and ate 2 small bananas…believe it or not, the twitching has eased up a bit, not as severe, maybe there’s something to the potasium thing. And as for Larry (Oct 5th) I think you should maybe try some place like church to meet someone if you attend and if not, why not? Keep your chin up, there are woman out there that want a real honest to goodness relationship not a one night stand. Best of luck to you. I hope your eye is better too.

Hey Bonnie, maybe you should be getting it more often since you still have your twitch. Mine seems to be less now that I’m meeting more women in Connecticut area. I think the more you do it the less you have twitching, maybe its the endorphins that occur during orgasm that release stress and help relax our mind and body. Good luck with your stress reducing….

Yes everything started with “flu symptoms” and twitching eye, then I went through suspecting that I have encephalites, etc, finally I started lose ballance and experience lethargy, then my other muscles started twitching – legs, stomack, arms…. And only then I started doing research on parasites. Now I know I have some kind of parasites for sure since my husband has the same symptoms/ But doctors are not interested in treating or even trying to diagnose them! What a shame!People, fight and try to make your doctors check you for parasites if you have simular symptoms, don’t wait till you get secondary infections like LIVER< HEART<LUNGS< BRAIN. Let’s change doctors false beleive that USA doesn’t have parasites. It’s like in Russia during Soviet Union time goverment would say – “We don’t have sex in Soviet Union”..lol

Im 19 and just stared working in an office setting about 3 weeks ago and ever since then the corner of my left has been twitching on and off. I tried treating it like a cramp by just rubbing it, but that dosent seem to work i did some research. Most of the causes seem likely except that none of them apply to me. I don’t drink coffee, I’m not stressed out, I eat good I sleep good but still with the twitching. It really dosent annoy me as much as it troubles me. I’m concerned, somethings going on inside of me that i can’t put my finger. Well i guess that I’ll just have to live with it for the time being. Im an upper left eyelid twitcher (outer portion of lid)

I was in Ireland & England for the month of Sept. on vacation. My lid started twitching about 1 week into my trip in Ireland. It twitched for the remaining 3 weeks of my trip & hasn’t stopped since I returned.

I had an eye dr. appt. scheduled when I returned & asked the dr. about the twitch. He told me it is probably due to either stress or lack of sleep & that it should clear up when I get back to a regular sleep pattern. I feel like I’m back to my regular sleep pattern & I don’t have a lot of stress in my life, so maybe I need to give it some more time. I also have dry eyes & use eye drops for it. I do notice it more if I’m on the computer, so maybe there is some eye strain involved in the cause of the twitching.

Glad to see I’m not a lone twitcher.

To the person who mentioned bipolar disorder and trileptal. I was on 1800mg Trileptal and had eyelid twitches that came and went, and were sometimes very frustrating (a couple times a second for minutes). My doc had me drop to 1500mg, and the eyelid twitches stopped pretty much immediately (although it still happens maybe once every six months).

Of course after reading the bloggs i now think i have some sort of brain stem desease. god i hope that is not true. but if i did i would die and not have to feel the pulsating eyelid anymore. which would be good. its pulsating now…like it has a estranged heartbeat.. a heart being born from my eye.. wanting to get out. fighting me.. it seems as if it wants to .. as if it is a it. a thing. a entity foriegn to my own person. it must be stopped…

This is a hoot! I did not know so many eye lid twitchers were out there. I have had my reoccurring problem for 10 years off and on. Like so many others I am taking vitamins, getting adequate sleep, and staying away from the temptations of coffee, but still the twitching lingers on. The worst duration of twitching lasted over a month!
    Now it is back.
I have had a lazy eye since I was a child and have been working the eye in the last two weeks to strengthen the muscle. I started to feel an ache in the muscle, which I am sure is a result from overworking the eye. Now the twitching has started. The crazy thing is that the twitching will immediately disappear when I patch the good eye and begin working the lazy eye again.
It is not just the patch though. I have had twitching episodes long before doing this. It’s seems muscular or neurological to me? Strange!

Wow !! Add another upper left eyelid twitcher to the list. This is still the top of the Google search. Mine started twitching 2 days ago. After reading all the things it could be, I seem to be doing a few of them.
    1. I drink 2 cups of STRONG coffee a day.
    2. I rarely get a decent sleep.
    3. I sit on the computer for hours on end (thx ebay)
    4. Ive started a new diet 3 weeks ago with food I dont usually eat. (specifically more red meat and less carbs)
    5. Ive started exercising more.
Since Ive been doing all this the twitch started, and its virtually non stop all day. Driving me crazy !!
Now…maybe we’ve all been to the same website or had the same joke sent to us and its a giant eye twitching computer virus that someone designed to drive us nuts !! LOL. Could someone please Forward the antidote to me !!

I HAVE RETURNED TO TELL THE STORY OF THE SOLUTION TO MY SPECIFIC EYE TWITCHING! WHAT U HAVE TO DO IS MOVE URE EYE IN THE OPPISITE DIRECTION OF THE TWITCHING, BASICALLY LOOK IN THE OPPISITE DIRECTION OF THE TWITCHING. IF THAT DOESNT WORK THEN MOVE URE EYE IN CIRLCLES SEVERAL TIMES – ALL AROUND – IT SHOULD EVENTUALLY GO AWAY IN A FEW SECONDS – I REPEATED THIS STEP FOR 1 DAY AND THE TWITCHING STOPPED
!!!! THANK GOD ! GOOD LUCK TO YOU ALL ! – I FOUND THIS OUT BY ASKING A EYE DOCTOR – KEEPING THE EYES IN ONE POSITION LOOKING IN THE SAME DIRECTION ALL DAY CAN CAUSE THE PULSATING/TWITCHING EYELID.

My lower eyelid twitched pretty much non-stop for several months. At times, both lower eyelids would twitch. I had been taking Welbutrin for depression for about 7 years. I stopped taking the Welbutrin, and 3 days later, it just stopped. Later I took the Welbutrin again, and within a day it started again. Then I stopped again, and a day later it stopped twitching again. I haven’t taken the Welbutrin for about 6 months now, and no twitching started again.

This eye twitching blog has taken on a life of it’s own. The very first post was back in the summer of 2003 and here we all are, 3 years later, still posting comments about our own irratating eye twitches (if you are wondering, mine is the upper left eyelid).

I am beginning to think that it would be far easier to solve the aged old question on how to solve world peace than it is to stop our lids from flippin’

It would be interesting to have the original author of this site fill us in on their current status of “eye-mobility.” Is your eye still twitchin’? Is it still driving you nuts? What was your own personal remenedy?

My eye has been twitching for about one month now. I have stress on the job, but it hardly drives crazy, I can leave it at work. I have children and a husband, and yes they are irratating at times, enough so to give me a permanent twitch, more so than just the eyelid though. I also go to night school part time and am taking business law classes. Could all this make my eyes twitch? Probably. I have learned to live with it, though I would have reither had the stress get rid of my “love handles” through twitching instead.

    Barbara:

Hi there! It’s me, the guy who runs this madhouse. At your request, I’m back. I actually read every single comment written here (they’re emailed to me automatically)–and we’re getting close to a thousand comments! It’s quite a phenomenon, something I didn’t expect at all when I wrote the thing way back when. In fact, this post has turned out to be the main draw for this blog–hundreds of people every day stop by after having Googled for “eyelid twitching” (this site remains in the top three returns for that term). I’m glad that so many people find this to be a useful resource for this inarguably minor, yet just as inarguably exasperating malady.

My own twitching is kind of an on-off thing, mostly off, thank goodness. I did just have a small relapse a few days ago, in fact, but just for a few hours. It comes and goes like that.

As I implied in the entry this comment discussion is based upon, I strongly believe that, in many cases (not all, of course), there is a psychological compenent at play here. I am sure that there are physiological causes, but I also believe that the mind plays a big part, especially in the continuation of the twitching.

Case in point: I don’t know if this works for everyone, but I have found that if I try to observe the twitching in a mirror, it has the tendency to stop. At first it was frustrating–I wanted to see what the thing looked like. But then I found it was a way to relieve the twitching–but only temporarily, as the twitching would start back up within a minute or so, and it would be too troublesome to keep looking in a mirror every minute or two. But then I found that I could stop my twitching by imagining I was looking at it. Eventualy the twitch would be gone long enough for me to have become occupied with something else, and it would not return. Weird, but it worked for me.

In contrast, I found that by allowing the twitch to bug me, it got worse. Thinking about the twitch and how annoying it was only seemed to exacerbate it. Ignoring it, simply disregarding it, helped stop it from happening.

Now, it may be that this was a particular way that I stumbled upon for me to subconsciously control the tremors, like training my mind to defeat them, and it might not work for anyone else. But hey, it’s worth a try. And it might help to know that it can be controlled in this way, just like believing in potassium, avoiding caffeine, and all the other remedies will work, that this will help them work. I think a big part of this is believing you can defeat it. Once you believe, you are halfway home. Concentrating on how unbeatable it is, I think that’s a recipe for making it worse and prolonging the suffering.

If you can find a way to make the twitching stop even for a few seconds, try to build on that, like I did. I stumbled across the mirror technique, but it could be anything, anything that you find (or even believe) causes the twitching to stop for a short time. Once you find something, anything, then see if you can work it into your psyche, make it a voluntary response. Once you feel like you have control over it, it becomes easier to dismiss and not worry about.

My best hopes and wishes for everyone to get their twitching under control. As they say here in Japan, gaman sh’te and gambatte kudasai! (be patient and hang in there!).

I was having twitching in my lower right eyelid non-stop for over a week… I went to an eye doctor last night frankly because I couldn’t take it anymore and was hoping he would have some answers. He had nothing more to add that hasn’t already been posted except taking and Antihistamine. I took one last night and when I woke this morning my pulsing has stopped! Not sure if this is a cure all for any others but hey its worth a try!

Finding this site has just blown my mind! I really didnt expect this. My eye has been twitchin since I bought my first house 3 weeks ago. I just wondered if I could find out if their was anything to help make this madness stop but apparently it just has to go away on its own. A girl I worked with said that eating carrots would make it stop but it has yet to.

    Hello,
I developed an eye twitch out of the blue. It worsened in frequency and intensity for 15 days. I researched my condition on the net and decided that it was either very minor or the beginning of something serious. I thought that the twitch may be related to caffeine (big consumer of diet pepsi only) and decided to quit drinking it. Well the first 7 days without caffeine was terrible. I slept for 12 hours per day, was irritable, and my head was in a fog. Once I decided to get off caffeine I started counting the twitches each day. On the 5th day I began to notice a decrease in the number of twitches and a decrease in the intensity of the twitch. Within 8 days I was down to 0 twitches and have been free of them for 15 days. It could be the caffeine, the chemicals in the soda, the increase in sleep, or just a coincidence. All I can say is…I will never drink a soda again.
Thank God I’m free at last.
    Best to all of you.

Yes i am a fellow twitcher, have been for as long as i can remember and i’m only 23 :) I sometimes forget that it happens until like right now, it kicks back into gear!!!

I found out a while ago that Luis’ trick works for me also as whenever i went to look at it in the mirror or tried to show someone the damn thing went away, only to return within minutes, resulting in me trying to see it or show others again for it to only disappear, making me think that i was going crazy!!!

Both my upper eyelids randomly twitch mostly my left (hope something bad isnt going to happen :( as mentioned in previous posts)

I have noticed that since i’ve been working in an office (previously worked outdoors 90% of the time) it’s been happening more regularily, and i’ve also noticed that STRONG real coffee (not instant) gives it a kick start, Like whats just happened now :)

I also have a friend that had never twitched in his life and then had a head injury in a game of football (concussion) and he’s been twitching on and off ever since so maybe its something to do with the brain or nerve damage or something ?!?!

My opinion is that its just stressed brain or strained eyes, which would give reason to the effect of coffee on the twitch. I was reading in an article that “Caffeine modulates a higher brain function through its effects on distinct areas of the brain” so maybe those areas in the brain have something to do with the eyelid???

Anyways was good to see that there are so many twitchers out there…

Hello fellow twitchers! I’ve been twitching for over three months and finally found relief overnight! I found this site literally last night in the midst of my twitch going away. One thing I found is that after reading most every posting, there wasn’t a comprehensive list of things to try so I compiled some information. I hope it is helpful. There is an end to the twitching. Since starting drinking more water and adding potassium yesterday afternoon, the frequency decreased almost instantly to twice an hour and today only twice and only because I sneezed. Thanks everyone for your posts!

Information about Myokymia or Blasphospasm – aka The Dreaded Twitching Eyelid

There is no known cause but it can sometimes be attributed to stress, eye strain, vitamin/mineral/or water deficiency, poor diet, allergies, and excessive use of caffeine. In some rare cases it can be an indication of something more serious. Always check with your opthmologist or physician.

Twitching can happen a few times a day or every 3 minutes all day (this was me). It can last for several days, months, or years (off and on) and last for a few seconds or several minutes. It can be triggered by sneezing, yawning, or bright light.

What can you do? What seems to work?

There are lots of things you can do. Some may and some may not work. There is no single cure that works for everyone. I’ve tried many and found others that worked for other people. I suggest trying everything you can.

    Things to try…

    1. Rest and relaxation (I tried this even napping during the day)
    2. Rest eyes from computer – some people have tried an eye patch, (I tried the eye patch), always take breaks if you are working long periods of time. Look up from computer for a minimum of five minutes every half hour or so. Some say setting the ‘refresh rate’ to 75hz helps, (didn’t try resetting the refresh rate but do take breaks)
    3. Drinking lots of water – 8 glasses or so a day (this was what worked for me, overnight!)
    4. Potassium or magnesium supplements – (I added both, staying within safe guidelines, don’t take more than you need)
    5. Tonic water – it has been said because it contains quinine
    6. Agaricus – a holistic medicine, don’t know much about it
MSM supplement – don’t know much about it
    7. Acupressure – (this offered some temporary relief for me), massage around the bottom joint of ring finger on the hand of the side of the twitch, also massaging between eyes
    8. Eye drops – either for allergies or lubricating (I tried both)
    9. Complete eye exam – perhaps a new lens prescription is needed and to reassure yourself it’s not a brain tumor (I got new glasses)
    9. Chiropractic neck adjustment
    10. Last resorts – Botox injections or surgery, (I have heard that the Botox may not be lasting and that the surgery is painful and takes a long time to recover from)
    11. Though I considered ripping off my lid on several occasions, I think this is probably not a great idea.
    12. Keep a good sense of humor!

    Hello all you fellow twitchers!
I am a right lower eyelid twitcher. It has been twitching for over a month now…maddening!!!!!!!!!I’ve read all the other posts to see what worked for others, and this is my story and what I have tried so far: I don’t really get stressed out, prefer to laugh away my problems, and I get plenty of sleep. Not too much caffeine, 1 cup of coffee in the morning and maybe 2 pepsi’s through the day the rest of the day I drink water, so I’m getting enough H2O. However, like a couple of other people had posted, I too noticed the twitching had started after I had started eating bananas. I got this really cool fruit bowl and started loading it up with fruit, and bananas are the easiest to grab and start munchin’ on so I was eating more bananas than I have in my life! So much for the potassium defiency theory for me anyway. We are also doing a lot of work on our house, lots of dust around. And having just moved into our house we didn’t have a phone so I was using this new cell phone I had gotten like crazy and I always talk using my right side. So…I quit the bananas cold turkey, started using eye drops to try and combat the dust and ran out of minutes on my phone. I have noticed that the twitches are getting less frequent and much less intense, hopefully they are on their way out! Got my fingers crossed…I’ll let you know if they quit completely, Good Luck everyone in the battle of the twitches!

Wow. After having this go on for a few days, I decided to see what is causing it. Unbelievable how many people that this is affecting. I’m 21, and it’s pretty subtle (lower right eyelid), but it is very irritating. Only read a few dozen posts in this thread, but this seems to linger for months/years. SCARY.

Only thing I can think of why this started was that I recently tried taking my glasses off for a day, and tried to see how well I could see without them. I used to have relatively good vision, just could not see far away details. I only put my glasses on when I needed them. Since I’ve started wearing my glasses everyday (for 3-4 years now), my vision has become extremely worse. I can’t see more than 7 inches in front of me without it being blurry.

Anyway, the twitching started after attempting to see without my glasses. I got a migraine afterwards (lol), and then it started. I also was on a computer for most of the day after doing that, and that’s when I really started noticing it. But, I’m generally on a computer 8+ hours of the day.

I’m gonna try some of the suggestions noted and hopefully this will just go away. But, from what I’ve read, this seems to be a persistent problem. And that…sucks…

I only seem to get it when I start focusing on far-away objects. When I’m at a computer screen, it doesn’t pop up as often. But, if I look away it starts going crazy.

Just wanted to follow up. After over three months of twitching, I am twitch free two days now (I don’t even twitch when sneezing or yawning!). It seems it was the water that did the trick for me after ruling out the bananas. Incredible! As long as I am doing 6 glasses or more of water during the day, all is calm. I feel like a new person!

    Greetings all twitchers…

I developed my twitch (lower left) approximately 3 weeks ago. It came on (one day no twitch, the next day full blown). Everyone said “stress” or “lack of sleep”, well I don’t think I have a problem with either one of those.

About a week into my twitching my upper left eyelid began to swell like a balloon. Three days later, the swelling reduced about 80%, but not completely.

So… long story short, I have a partially swollen upper eyelid and a lower that twitches for a few seconds every few minutes… very annoying… I have read many of the posts on this site, and have not seen any mention of the swelling… anybody know about that part of the program?

Trying to keep my chin up, but… its not easy…

This is so bizarre. yet so cool.

I’ve had the upper eyelid twitch thing occasionally all my life, no big deal. But about a week ago my lower left lid has gone nuts. The lower lid thing is way more annoying.

Weirdly, I noticed the mirror thing myself, earlier today. When I look in the mirror I’ll see a twitch or two and then it stops. I’m going to work on imagining the mirror

Eyedrops help, temporarily. Sleep would probably help, too. I don’t get much of that. But I’ve been sleep deprived for years . . .

I’m drinking a lot less caffeine than I used to, taking no meds, eating bananas – but not too many. *sigh* Maybe I’m getting the flu, I dunno, I’ve never had the flu before.

I’m going to increase my water intake, see if that helps. Otherwise I guess I’ll grin and bear it and blame it on lack of sleep. Until I go stark raving mad from the twitching, that is

    Hello twitchers,
15 years ago when my upper right eyelid started twitching for several days,i came across an article which said right upper eyelid twitching in male is good omen & some days later i got a Government job & twitching stopped.
10 years later again upper right eyelid started to twitch for several days & i got promotion.
But now my upper left eyelid has been twitching for few months & my wifes upper right eyelid twitching for several days, so i dont know what is there in store for us.
General belief in INDIA is that right twitching is good for males & left twitching is considered good for females.

But Please remember “ALL THAT HAPPENS HAPPENS FOR GOOD”

Wow, I had no idea there were so many of us out there with the eye-twitch thing. I’ve had eye-twitching off and on for the last few years in both eyes and both upper and lower lids (not at the same time, of course). The most recent bout of eye-twitching is the most annoying though. For the last few months every time I smile my upper right lid begins to twitch. Sometimes it moves violently, sometimes it hardly moves at all. I’ve tried all of the suggestions for making it stop and nothing helps. It’s frustrating because when I smile at people I never know if they’re seeing the eye-twitch, so then I stop smiling. It’s really annoying. It’s nice to know I’m not the only one suffering. :)

HERE’S THE CURE THAT WORKED FOR ME. HOPEFULLY SOME OF YOU WILL FIND THIS HELPFUL…

I had the ‘eye twitch’ twice in my life, about two years ago and again recently. Two years ago, I took a couple potassium supplements and the eye twitch was gone within a day.

Recently, my twitch returned, I once again took some potassium supplements – but it didn’t work this time. I read in this blog and learned that there could be other causes, i.e., vitamin B6, calcium or magnesium deficiencies. I often take daily multi-vitamins and eat cereal for breakfast (includes B6), I often drink milk (contains calcium) so I decided to give magnesium supplements a try.

Within a few days of taking magnesium supplements, the eye twitch went away almost completely (with initial improvements noticed after about a day). Now I take one magnesium supplement tablet about once every second week or so to keep my magnesium level up. This solved the twitch problem for me!

Greetings fellow eyelid flickerers! I feel better already, to be part of this group. Luis do you know what a good thing you started?. I haven’t read all entries (think it might be bad for the twitch) – but I reckon someone ought to do a PhD on this. My problem started when I got strep throat followed by a cold or series of colds that have lasted FOUR WEEKS! This morning my throat felt better at last, but the twitching continues. Two of my friends have died in the last two months and my sleep has been abysmal, though I don’t actually feel stressed. I thought I’d got it sussed when I stopped a prescription drug I’ve been taking for several months and the twitching vanished. After two days it returned undiminished. I’m assuming that was a placebo effect. I’m going to try Magnesium now – as that’s good for PMS too, which I’ve also been getting worse. These factors are probably all related aren’t they? Stress does seem to be the most common explanation. The stress could’ve opened me up to the virus… Thanks for this

I had no idea that there were so many eye twitchers!!

My eye twitching started about a week ago. I attributed it to stress (holiday – inlaws during Thanksgiving and again gearing up for Christmas). But as I am thinking back I have recently had neck and back issues. I can only turn my head about 60% both left or right without experiencing a stabbing pain shooting down my back. (I am twiching as I write).

    It is driving me CRAZY!!

I have been on a low carb diet for 3 years (with much success) and , after reading other entries, I am beginning to wonder if it’s starting to catch up with me. I take Biotin regulary, and as it is in the vitamin B group I would think it is covered.

Maybe I will try to eat a few banannas and drink more water. Anything to get rid of this eye twitch!

I am amazed that i came across this blog after trying to do some research on eye twitching. Simply incredible. haha .. I’ve been having this left eye lid twitch non stop for the past 2 weeks or so. I have had it happen in the past, but it never lasted for more than a day. I have begun worrying after it didnt go away after a few days. I originally thought that it was due to stress ( i do work 5, 12 hour days a week) but i’ve been doing this for 3 years now and never has this happened. Also, ive been having these really weird pains in my chest as well. Perhaps it is all stress related, but as a last resort i think i am going to go see my doctor. what if it is something serious?? This page has so many different insights on what it could be, and i just dont know what to believe. Nevertheless, GREAT BLOG.

Well this blog has put me somewhat at ease in thinking i’m not alone and this is not uncommon. All you people are alive still i’m sure….hopefully. It’s Friggen annoying!!! My twitching started a couple weeks ago, and i totally agree with the stress as the underlying cause. Losing a job is stressful! Anyway, it’s only me left eye and usually the outside corner that is twitching quite frequently. Several times an hour.

    Hello fellow eye twitchers!
This is my first time to this site. I am having annoying lower left eyelid twitching, it has been happening for almost 2 weeks now. When it first started, it started just over 4 years ago. Back then, it lasted for 3 months and then just stopped completely, and now just over 4 years later, it has come back for a visit. It is driving me nuts!!!! I went to see my doctor and she said that the best thing to take, and the only thing that you can take for a twitching eyelid is a muscle relaxant. I am not one to take them, but have tried every other thing natural remedies and with no luck have had any success. I think I will try what my doctor has suggested for a short period of time and see if I have any luck with it. I feel a very strong pulsating against my eyelid from my left lower eyelid and it lasts for approximately 15-60 secs at a time, and occurs between 8-10 times a day. Just today, my right lower eyelid has started pulsating, but not as much as my left lower eyelid. I hope and pray that it stops soon, cause it really is a complete nusiance.
Hope everyone else has luck getting theirs to stop, and if you find a miracle, PLEASE OH PLEASE let me know. I would greatly appreciate it.
    Take care.

I am so glad I found this site despite the twitching of my eye. My eye has always twitched a little, even when I was a kid. Then I could purposely make it twitch and I did because I thought it was kind of freakishly funny. Little did I know that my behavior would come back to haunt me. My right eye has been flapping for the past week. I feel better now reading the posts because it’s probably just stress and too much computer staring. But god dangit the twitching happens at the most inappropriate times doesn’t it? While talking to my boss… I try to catch it in the mirror to see if I look like a maniac when it twitches, but it always stops. I guess I am a psycho, so bring on the sobe adrenaline rushes despite the wind my eye lid is creating.

OMG! I had no idea eyelid twitching would be so pervasive. I thought I was crazy.

I’ve recently started a new job, and apparently eyelid twitch was an unlisted benefit. After complaining to a coworker, he revealed that he went through the same thing over the first few months of his employment here. It is a bit more stressful here than at my old employer.

Thus, I think mine may be environmental. I’ve switched to a high-end LCD monitor, started wearing the glasses I’ve had for three years but never bothered with, drinking more water and taking breaks every 2-3 hours.

If that doesn’t work, the cafeteria sells bananas.

I’ve had an twitch below my right eye for 8 months. I’ve tried acupuncture, reducing caffeine (except for my morning cup of tea but the diet coke was killing me) , taking B-12, eating bananas, I quit my job (stressful) and started a new one (maybe out of the frying pan and into the fire) but I finally went to the eye doctor last week. He thought that since I had Bells Palsy on that side of my face 8 years ago, that it might be a nerve trying to re-fire or something to that effect and thus it is twitching sporadically. I’ll be going to another doc in 2 weeks to get it checked out. Since it has gone on so long he mentioned Botox as a suggestion for stopping it temporarily. Has anyone tried that? I’m not sure how I feel about that?

Great blog–I agree for us chronic eye twitchers!

I’ve had this happening off and on for the last couple of years, either eye, upper or lower, sometimes both at the same time!!! Right lower, left upper and visa-versa!! It’s insane. I drink a crap load of coffee… been doing it for years…. I don’t think it’s because I can go months with NO twitching?
I think I’ve narrowed mine down to erratic Sleep Habits, STRESS and being on the computer all day. Just last week…no eye twitching…it seemed like the movie “GROUND HOGS DAY”, I had a dark cloud over my head, everything I touched turned to crap. Now…..this week…..eye twitching in the lower right!
I have a banana every day so…? I can make it happen by shutting my eye real tight, open my eye….and there it is.

I’ve had various twitches over the past 20 years but usually intermittently, and not related to anything I could identify. However, about 10 days ago I developed a continuous rapid one about an inch below the right eye which was driving me nuts as they always do. I had been in the emergency room 2 weeks earlier for heavy menstrual bleeding which I’d never has so much of (tho without pain) and tested fine (didn’t need a transfusion and wasn’t even anemic!), but they put me on low dose Birth control pills, to balance my hormones. I quit them years ago because I felt horrible on them, but I thought I’d try it. I started having weird fatigue and flashes of depression, then horrible migraines and that twitch. Finally my WHOLE FACE started twitching and my heart began to race. I went back to the damned emergency room and had high blood pressure and rapid heart beat like a speed overdose. (I quit all that stuff over 20 years ago due to painful heart palpitations.) My heart ekg, blood and X-rays were all normal but I found a private Dr. the next day I like and we figured it had to be somehow connected to the bc pills. She gave me a tranqulizer to calm my nervous system.
I did some research and found that bc pills increase the half life of caffeine from 3-4 hours to 5-10 hours! So I was bulding it up to toxic levels as I drink enormous amounts of green and black tea. It’s been 3 days since I took my last (EVER) bc pill and thank God, the twitch stopped, as did my tachycardia. I’m drinking tea but not as strong now as I sure didn’t want a rebound headache. I don’t care if I bleed buckets, I don’t want to go through that again!

Eyelid twitch for 20+ years, yes, brainstem damage, yes demylenating disease, and I still believe it has nothing to do with it!! For me, it’s entirely STRESS. Even mentioning the word makes my lids go crazy! Sleep ok, not great, but no bad, vitamins and minerals ok, caffiene, not too bad, but even thinking about 3 things at once sets them off!
Thanks for the great site, this would be a great stop for some serious research! Facinating!!
And thanks all for your wonderful sense of humor about such a common annoyance, it’s refreshing!
    Keep on keeping-on!!

I stayed up all night studying and preparing for some college final exams… I was drinking energy drinks to stay awake so I had a lot of caffeine in my system… Now for the last two days my lower left eye lid has been twitching like crazy, ah! In my case I’m assuming its stress, lack of sleep, and too much caffeine. I just hope now that finals are over that the twitch goes away!

  163. December 21st, 2006 at 01:21 | #163

This is about the weirdest thing that has ever happened to me … final exams for a university student that’s what caused mine …

    1) constant junk food
    2) 2-3 extra large coffees per day
    3) lots and lots of stress
    4) a lack of willingness to do anything
    5) work and final exams
    6) definitely not eating bananas (actually the last time I had vegetables was when I ordered chinese takeout =P)

Yes surprisingly I’m not 4 feet tall, 300 pounds, I’m 6’1″ weighing in roughly 180 lbs. and now an eye twitch sufferer.

I noticed that my eyelid started twitching after I started taking a regimen of a mutli-vitamin, b-complex and omega 3 pills… Could it be an excess of a certain vitamin perhaps? My guess might be B-12 since I took a multi-vitamin along with a B-complex? B-12 is known for its natural “kick” similar to caffine. I don’t drink coffee, and get a decent amount of sleep. I am under stress at the workplace but nothing drastic has changed about that. Someone did post a comment about starting to take vitamins before their eyelid twitch began…just my 2 cents.

Ok my left eye is flckering on and off throughout the day. My right also flickers once in a while. I made my buddy watch my eye to confirm the spasm. I am going to get down to the bottom of this. I am going to go to a docter if it doesn’t go away soon. Could be just a strain or whatever. I’ll let you guys know what happens if it doesn’t go away.

I developed an upper left eyelid twitch a couple of years ago and I know exactly what the cause is and how to stop it for myself. In my case exercise is the cause. After several weeks of regular exercise it will start. The more I continue, the worse it gets. After I stop exercising for several weeks, it will stop. Since a sedentary lifestyle is not my thing, I have to find an alternative solution. My theory is that exercise increases ones metabolism and it is an elevated metabolism that causes the twitching.

    Hi Twitchers!
I was eating a banana and surfing for a cure when I happend upon your fun club! I am an upper lefty too and it is way worse when I laugh… right now I am twitching at the speed of light!
I had no idea before but TWITCHERS RULE! It feels better when I keep my eye closed and apply slight pressure so I am going to get a cool eye patch tomorrow and wear it to Christmas dinner. After reading the comments above, I figure I will just embrace the twitch and move on. Thanks for the laughs, I needed it!

For myself, Ive narrowed the cause down to one thing –BEEF.

The ONLY time I get eye twitches–and Ive got one now–is when I’ve just eaten beef. I had a nice prime-grade rib eye steak a couple hours ago and just noticed the lower left corner of my left eyelid is twitching. I don’t usually eat beef more than a couple times a month, but many times when I do, I get this exact same twitch. Usually, I eat other things along with the beef, but tonight I only had the steak and a glass of water. I am well rested and unstressed and taking the same vitamin supplement I always take. So I am positive that for me, beef is the cause of my current eye twitch.

My guess is, it’s not beef itself, but some hormone or other treatment given to the cow, (or pesticide residue on the cow’s feed), which becomes a part of the cow’s muscle tissue and then later is absorbed by my digestive system. The chemical somehow interferes slightly and annoyingly with my central nervous system.

If I’m right about the cause, then switching to organic beef should stop the post beef twitches.

Acting on this hunch, Ive googled organic beef, and Im seriously thinking about having a few pricey organic rib-eyes shipped over in a freezer package.

I’ll post again when I try the organic beef.

    Hello Fellow Eye Twitchers,
I’ve been experiencing eye twitches recently. If its not one thing it’s the other with me lately. I had vertigo about 6 months ago after an overnight layover and a flight. Ever since, my body has been giving me issues. From heart palpatations to pressure in the head. I’ve gotten a stress test, Cat Scan and seen a Neurologist. I’ve been pretty paranoid about it. Now it’s this eye twitching thing. Left upper eyelid 5+ times a day for about 5-10 sec. If you go to web md.com they say it could be something associated with seisures and/or stress related. It seems that all of you are better off than I am. It looks like this IS the mecca of eye twitchers. All the doctors seem to think that I’m ok. No signs of issues with all these tests. If anyone should think that it might be something serious, it doesn’t hurt to get checked out. Don’t be embarrased either. It’s your health. Hope this information is somewhat useful. Happy twitching to all and to all a good night.

I have had the same problem 2 years ago my lower right eye lid twitched for six months straight all day every day i was checked for ms tests were normal. Eventually they went away. Now back to the same old thing above my right ear on my head started twitching for about 2 months they said it was tmj i started wearing a mouth guard that problem is almost gone now my upper right eyelid has been twitching everyday for the past 2 months this is very irritating. My allergies are horrible i do smoke and am trying my best to quit. I do drink a lot of caffeine. I also had a low potassium count hopefully this will eventually go away. I was really concerned after being tested for ms but like i said that was normal this site helped me alot seeing i am not alone and how many others have the same problem. Well good luck to everyone including myself.

    Hi fellow twitchers,
I agree with Thomas’ April 25, 2004 post – in my particular case, I think it is my monitor refresh rate, which is set at 60Hz.
My left eye started twitching four days ago for no apparent reason. I am absolutely not stressed and am sleeping and eating plenty and well. The only thing that has changed is that I have started spending enormous amounts of time in front of my machine. This must be the cause.
    Cheers

Just had a stressful christmas and disturbed sleep with a poorly 2 year old. Eaten more chocolate than normal and unusually had 2 strong cups of coffee just before the dreaded twitch happened. It is my lower left and it happens every 5-10 minutes throughout the day. It is definately worse when I think about it or stress about it. Did find an article in a journal of ophthalmology and neurology saying “chronic eyelid myokymia is benign” I think i’m happy with that and will google no further for reassurance. High hopes it will go today .. or tomorrow .. or the next day but I guess it just doesn’t matter if it stays.

Wow! I was also suprised at how many people have this annoying problem! Mine started right before I went to California for a vacation about 2 weeks ago. I think I was playing piano when it started in the upper corner of my right eye. I asked my friend about it, who said it was normal. But no, while I was there it stopped, but when I got home it started again worse than before! Now it is several times a day for different lengths of time. It never happened before that time a few weeks ago.
It’s odd because I don’t drink caffeine and have been getting more sleep than ever, due to winter break. Other than that everything is the same, including diet and amount of time in front of a computer screen. I am right handed – could that have something to do with it? Please HELP!! It is driving me CRAZY!!!!!!

It’s nice to know I’m not the only one, though. :)

P.S. Could it eventually damage your vision in that eye? Just curious.

Oh I forgot to mention: it is usually triggered (at least for me) by yawning, stretching, laughing or coughing. I can stop it sometimes by pulling my eyelid away from my eye. Thought it might help. Good luck, fellow eye twitchers!

Poor, poor twitchers. This has been just miserable. Here’s another twist to add to the mix: my boyfriend and I both have the twitch, and have had it for more than a month. Can it be something in our environment?

I’m definitely going to try the bananas and tonic water, but I am baffled. It can’t be sleep with me, and I drink as much caffeine as ever. The beef idea is interesting… but I have also been eating beef forever. At this point, I’m most inclined to believe it’s either being sick, since I have had a virus for a long time now, or it’s a reaction to some other change, like the fact that I’ve been drinking much more than usual.

I’m so relieved to read that there are so many others! I actually was starting to believe that I might have MS, so thanks to you all for giving me a little peace!

    Try eyedrops.

I have suffered from eyelid twitching on and off for about three years now (I’m 27). It would go on for a few weeks, then go away and I might not have a problem again for months. One stretch, it might be my right lower eyelid, and then the next time, maybe the left upper eyelid. It was seemingly random. My most recent episode was becoming so annoying that I did a search online, leading me to this blog. It’s nice to know that there are other people out there who can sympathize with the fact that this problem can really hurt your day-to-day life.

I smoke, I drink one cup of coffee a day, and I work in front of a computer, all things that are supposed to trigger this condition. However, I also exercise, eat healthy, and drink tons of water, which knocks out some of the suggested solutions that I found here.

Well, today I realized that my eyes were getting really dry and irritated, because I work in a heavily air-conditioned office. Normally I would just wait for the irritation to go away, because I have trouble touching my eyes or using eyedrops. It was becoming so uncomfortable, though, that I broke down and bought some Visine on my way home. Well, the twitches stopped immediately.

This seems to be the remedy for me! I hope it works for some of you, too.

Hi, my upper left eyelid started twiching about a month ago and went away. Now it is back in full force. It twiches when I yawn or sneeze. I am trying to cut out tea and coffee. I have always been a highly stressed out individual coupled with anxiety. I am glad to know that this problem should subside itself through relaxation and magnesium intake.

    Thanks!

Not quite out of the woods yet, still a very mild flicker now and again but nothing like it was although interestingly it was at its worst yesterday. My regime was as follows, Vitamin B complex, magnesium thrown in for good measure, tonic water, hot then cold compresses, vigarous pulling of the offending eyelid. I am not sure that any of those mentioned had an impact unless magnesium takes 2 days to work then i’d be convinced. The only thing I did do last night was to go to bed really early and take an antihistamine (read that works sometimes). Anyway feeling much happier now I am no longer plagued. The only other thing to mention is that the childen went back to school today which does seem rather coincidental. Could be stress afterall I dont expect we will ever know!

Hi everyone. I just got back from the eye doctor and he said that my left eye was extremely dry and had scratches on the cornea so he prescribed some eyedrops which should help. He also told me that since mine is triggered by yawning heavily or coughing that it should not be that serious and should go away. I did have a panic attack regarding the twitching but the best thing to do is ignore it and it should go away….

I’ve had the eye twitching for about a month now, it is happening to my left eyebrow area though. Super annoying, kinda worrying me. I do believe it’s related to stress though, since around the time of the twitching I also started having chest pains and breathing problems. This all sucks because I’m just 19. Hello everyone, I am back. I decided to visit an eyelid “doctor” who has a PHD MD in opthamology and “eyelids” are his specialty. He is the guru of eyelid problems needless to say. I went there in tears about this stupid left eyelid twitch problem after I visited my regular eye doctor. The eyelid doctor told me that if the twitches are really ruining my life then botox injections will make it go away and the twitch usually never comes back. And, insurance also covers it. So I felt alot better. But, after visiting Luis’ site, I am snapping out of this rot and convincing myself that I can get rid of these nasty little twitches.

I have been eating bananas and taking magnesium, potassium, calcium, and cut out caffiene completely and have noticed less twitches! I have also been using natural tears which if you are using a computer alot you should try them. Get REFRESH PLUS NATURAL TEARS PRESERVATIVE FREE. Also, I swear by this tea and everyone should try it. CELESTIAL SEASONINGS TENSION TEA which has lots of good stuff in it including B vitamins. Not only did it calm me down, but it helped with not focusing on the eyes! So I told the doctor that I would only do Botox if it was a last resort. I truly believe that the human body can heal itself through natural products as well as meditation and yoga. Good luck everyone and I will let you know what happens.

i appreciate this site and the great comments. I have had the eye twitch for over a year (on and off) – right eye. I’ve tried more sleep. I quit caffeine. Yes, I even went for the occasional banana. I now attribute this to a combination of stress and still fatigue. As of yesterday I decided to try a massage. I just got a deep tissue body and facial Swedish massage. I never thought in a million years that the twitch would go away immediately. I thought it would take a series of sessions to relax my body fully. Lo and behold the 60 minutes cured the twitch. I’m not going to count on this being cured forever but I certainly now know what I need to do to change my life somewhat, since I can’t quit my job and run away from my husband and children. I hope this remedy works for you. Good luck.

So my upper right eyes lid/brow started twitching about oh….4 weeks ago and will NOT stop, I’m about ready to remove my eyes I swear to God. It’s gotten so annoying. I have it so many times a day I cannot even count them, some days it’s worse than others. I have noticed that when I take my glasses off sometimes that slows them down a bit, but they don’t ever completely go away. I get plenty of sleep at night, not sure if my diet is cauing it, although most sources I have read say that it’s more than likely not a dietary thing, but more than likely a lack of sleep or stress. My job is stress free, I work at an IT department in an Organ Donation Organization and I have yet to have a stressful day at work. I’m not sure what to do at this point but to hopefully ride it out and maybe it will stop? Closest thing I can think is that it is eye strain.

Holy Crap!! Who new this was such a common bother? Sure, most everyone has a twitch or two in their lives but it seems for some, it’s quite a condtion. It certainly makes sense for a twitch to develope from stress, lack of vitamins, etc… but my upper right eye started a constant twitch 5 days ago, after no apparent trigger. (Hasn’t stopped yet) I have analyzed my habits and diet and can’t figure out why it’s plagueing me now!! I made a comment to my mother-in-law about it and she’s got me scared to death that it’s an early sign of Bell’s Palsy… OMG! I’m going to the doctor just to be sure, lol. I feel like such a freak!

Thanks to all for the comments also. I have been suffering for four years and have not found anything that worked. Have not tried Botox due to some of the comments read on various sites as to having the eye either opened all the time or closed all the time. Both of these are worse than the spasms, I think. Have tried acupuncture, magnesium, B-12, bananas, etc. without success. Have not tried chiropractic assistance or massage yet so will pursue that. Good luck to all.

I’m an upper left lid twitcher, right handed.

I’ve had eye surgery and vague lower-lid twitches in my left lower eye since, and they don’t bother me. My upper left lid twitching started for me in the middle of a relaxing holiday – it began in a few short separated bursts, and then went all out, so that it twitched for about five minutes straight before a short break, and then twitched for another five. It seemed to have settled after about six hours, getting progressively less and less, and since then (three weeks ago) I’ve had the odd twitch now and then, perhaps once every four days, or when I sneeze. Still, it drives me nuts when it happens and makes me worry, so I won’t be satisfied it’s gone until it’s REALLY gone.

    (Ah, there it goes now.)

What have felt though is that my eyes have been burny/painful now and then, and I think having dry eyes may have contributed to the effect. My partner thinks it could have something to do with how I slept that night, and that I managed to trap some nerve.

I’m trying to think of what may have been contributing factors. I don’t take caffiene, eat fast food (I’m vegan), and I take b supplements, but possibly not as many as I should. I don’t have MS (I was tested for it a while back), but will be trying your supplement suggestions – the calcium, potassium, complex-b, magnesium cocktail sounds like a good place to start.

Thanks to everyone who’s commented with advice, I’ll be sure to take it. :)

Okay, reading over this page and looking at the symptoms/cures which more than one person has mentioned… (at least from my memory, which isn’t great):

    Reasons you have it:
    You are stressed
You have taken too many vitamins
You have not taken enough vitamins
You are not drinking enough water
    You have autistic children
    You are getting married
You have previously had Bells Palsy
    You have MS
You have a lower back pain problem
You are recovering from a sinus infection
You are recovering from any infection
You are drinking too much caffeine
You plan to take over the world
    You have an allergy
    You have hay fever
Your computer is at an incorrect frame rate
    You have a skin infection
You have a dry eye problem
You caught the eye twitching virus
You have started taking a new medication
You have recently had Lasix surgery (in the last few months)
    You aren’t getting enough carbs
    Your sleep patterns suck
    You sneezed, coughed, breathed…

    Ways you can fix it:
    Drink more (water or alcohol)
Force yourself not to have it mind-over-matter style
    Use compresses
    Stop the new medication
    Get a good sleep schedule
    Eat some carbs
    Wait until it goes away
    Get botox
    Go to a chiropractor
Set the frame rate of your computer (if that’s the right term) to 75 up from 60.
    Use an eye movement technique
    Eat bananas and broccoli
Take vitamins: calcium, B-complex, potassium, magnesium, manganese, etc…
    Take antihistamines
    Use an eye-drop substance
    Drink tonic water
Stop eating the food you’re allergic to

    Aaarrrghh.

Well at least I’m not alone.

I found this site yesterday while i was trying to figure out why my eye has gone insane the last week. I read through all this info and figured this does probably happen because of a number of reasons.

Well my eye twitched for 5 straight days and today it has almost completely stopped. Here’s what I did. I drank a gallon and a half of water yesterday. In the afternoon I took two Mega Men vitamins (GNC Multi Vitamin) and last night I drank a glass of water with Emer’gen-C. Emer’gen-C has potassium, magnesium and calcium. Then this morning after I went to the gym I took a protein shake that had a ton of minerals and vitamins in it and I took a Mega Men. A few hours later I took another Emer’gen C in some water. Point being, I took a ton of vitamins, minerals and water.

So far today my eye has twitched 2 times. Considerably less then the last week which was none stop top left lid. I think everyone with this problem should try the massive vitamin mineral and water cure. It looks like it has worked for many people on this site so give it a try. And on another hand, taking more of this stuff is good for anyone.

I just wish my eyes would make up their mind which eyelid is going to be the twitcher. It seems that all of them twitch at one time or another.

I think that the most annoying thing is that is makes it hard to focus on whatever you are looking at.

I also have Tourette’s Syndrome so have suffered all of my life with tics and compulsions. This eye-twitch is nothing like Tourette though since it is entirely involuntary, whereas the Tourette’s tics are more like a strong need that gradually builds until you release it by ticing.

Nice to know that I am not the only eye-twitcher though.
