Eyelid Twitching
Okay, it seems like a large number of people visiting my site are coming to read about eyelid twitching. In my fourth post (I am now over 250), I simply mentioned that I had one of those eyelid twitching episodes a lot of people seem to get, and it was irritating the heck out of me.
Suddenly, this site became the Mecca for Eyelid Twitchers. I can only suppose that there is relatively little out there about it, or that more people link to my site than they do to sites all about Eyelid Twitching, so I rank higher in Google.
Anyway, I started feeling bad for all those poor twitchers who came to my site seeking information or relief, and just found a really small note saying that my own eyelid was twitching as well. I mean, misery loves company and all, but it really isn’t useful outside of that. So I figured I might as well write something more substantive about eyelid twitching, so here it is.
First off, there’s a name for this: myokymia. “Myo-” is the Greek root for “eye,” and “-kymia” means “I’m making up this etymology.” But the name, at least, is for real. They’re also called eyelid “tremors,” as it sounds kind of psycho to have a “twitch,” or worse, a “spasm.” Nobody likes spasms. “Tremors” sounds cooler.
Myokymia is, according to doctors, “a common condition where a few of the muscle fibers of the upper — or more commonly the lower — eyelid contract irregularly. … Myokymia is closely associated with stress, fatigue, lack of sleep and too much caffeine.”
That’s doctorese for, “you’re eyelid’s twitching, moron. Try changing something.”
This doctor says that myokymia is associated with “brainstem neoplasms,” which sounds even cooler than “tremors.” “Brainstem neoplasms” is bound to get people at the office to pay attention when you talk about your problem. But then, the treatment for that includes a “lumbar puncture with examination of cerebrospinal fluid,” so maybe it’s best not to milk the neoplasm idea too far. Especially for a stupid eyelid twitch.
Frankly, when I get The Twitch, I’m not usually stressed out, I am getting as much sleep as ever, sometimes more, and I don’t drink coffee (I even have decaf Coke). Maybe it’s my Evil Plan to Dominate the World, we usually get eye twitches when we do that.
Some people stand by the theory that it is a vitamin deficiency, usually potassium (because someone once heard that potassium has something to do with muscles; we’re still trying to track that one down), and others swear that it’s a B-vitamin deficiency, saying they lose the twitch immediately when they start taking the pills. I have the strong feeling, however, that this is more to do with something that rhymes with the “flacebo effect.” For all of you who want the above remedies to work, I cleverly disguised my opinions about it there.
Treatment: Reduce your stress, get more sleep, nix the coffee, eat more bananas and B-complex pills. Throw in a couple of sugar pills for good measure. Save the cerebrospinal fluid exam for emergencies.
Or, you might just wait for them to go away on their own. Whatever.

Congratulations, Zarafein!
Yours is the 1000th comment on this entry. Quite a milestone!
After 16 yrs of staying home with 3 children, I began a full time job at an extremely busy Dr office. My postion was taking the phone calls, checking patients in. Seems easy but it involved being in front of the computer much of the day,was a demanding, over multi-tasking position that had little pay. The twitch under my let eye began as a noticeable pulse and continued for 10 days. I also had tightness in my chest. This was all due to the STRESS. I retired myself from that job and after making the call that I wasn’t going back to the job, my twitching has been less noticeable and I think is on its way out. STRESS does so much to us. I am still trying to relax and the more I do, the less twitching I get. I am not a housewife any longer as I now live on the lake and that is where I need to stay, to take care of myself and my family.
Find calm and peace in your life to get rid of the twitch.
Lakewife
OK so here I am…
adding myself to the list.
I am an upperleft twicher! for 2 weeks now!
it drives me up a wall!
i was searching to see if there was some meaning to it! and i see… stress and long hours of computer use! i hardly drink water and I’ve been overdosing with caffeine! so thre is my excuse!
i will try to control myself and see if it works!
I woke up 3 days ago and my left lower eyelid feels like it gets stuck down and starts to twich. Really makes me feel weird when talking to someone. I have looked in mirror while its happening and its not nearly as noticable as it seems. I am going to back off of the caffeine because i drink about 4 redbulls a day because a have been swamped with work i hope this cures my problem.
Thanks you! buggering the hell outta me. i’ve been drinking for two weeks straight but never thought it might have something to do with that…
omg im glad i found this site!! google skipped it my first few searches (i searched for causes of eye twitch and found pages on tourettes and stuff) My names Tom and i’m an upper-left- eyelid twitcher. I work at a coffee shop and let me tell you it is extremely stressful and the hours are crazy so my sleep schedule isnt as steady as it should be. (i cant forget to mention the black coffee or double shot of espresso to wake me up for the overnight shifts) Hopefully the twitching is caused by one of those factors, or possibly the added stress from some relationship and financial issues..damn…bottom line is i had already had enough things to deal with before my eyelid decided to go “uzi” on me. Flick-Flick-Flick-fffllliiiickkk hope it stops soon at least i kno im not alone and that it may not be more than an annoyance (i guess my cerebrospinal fluid isnt going anywhere anytime soon
)
Perhaps we are all going about this the wrong way … perhaps we should embrace the twitch. We could come up with a whole range of eye-twitch accessories. I’m thinking some sort of tiny dangling puppet that dances with every twitch. Eyelid theatre.
What do you think?
3 going on 4 weeks. It is really annoying. Glad I came across this website. I will try all these suggestion.
I’m really glad to see a sense of humor, and yes..your site was one of the first to pop up when i searched google!! And I thought I had it bad??? Seriously, I needed a good laff, and if I thought I coulda got it here I would have searched a week ago!!! lmao
My twitching started this past week, bottom left. I got a new cat recently, and thought perhaps allergy?? I have no helpful suggestions yet, but appreciate all yours.
Hi, twitchers. My left upper eye lid has been twitching for two months now. Especially when I shut my eyes real hard, it would go on continously for about a minute. It was starting to drive me crazy. I found this site, took quite some time reading most of the posts and decided to try the magnesium. I bought a calcium / magnesium combination (just because it was available) and took them once a day. I am four days later now, and the twitch is GONE!!
I never would have believed something this simple would really work, but it did. Great site.
Just to let you know that my twitch has gone.
Had it constantly for 6 weeks, morning, noon and night. Drove me mad.
Been twitch-free for almost a week now. Don’t want to be too overconfident. Absolutely no idea why it went on for so long or why it stopped.
Glad my eyelid is having a holiday now!
This past week I have had upper right eyelid twitches and they have been bugging the heck out of me. I am a high school math teacher and thought maybe it was the stress of the job…. but I first got them directly after Xmas break. Got a new PS3 over the holidays, and we were up late a couple of nights playing it, so not sure about that being the cause. I haven’t been drinking more coffee than usual. I drink at least 64 oz of water every day and take vitamins daily. I did start some green tea pills 2 weeks ago though….. could that be a cause? The twitches aren’t as bad now as in the beginning of the week. So, do you think a warm compress is good? (Stress isn’t going to get any less any time soon…….)
Ideas that haven’t already been said?
Happy Twitching – NOT…..
I started twitching 3 days ago. I can’t stand it! it has brought me to tears daily. My Boyfriend says it is just stress. Of course it stress, my eye lid won’t stop vibrating and that’s stressfull!
In answwer to your question Brandi I do think heat helps. Sat by our open fire yesterday evening and felt the offending eyelid get quite warm and the twitch certainly became less although sadly did not go completely. As mine has been going on now for 3 weeks morning noon and night I went to the G.P today. He assured me that it means nothing serious and I could discount M.S or brain tumour. The reassurance has worked wonders much better than the magnesium, calcium, vit B, tonic water, hot/cold compress, kalms, antihistamines, decaff etc etc. I think what makes the twitch stay is worry and anxiety. Forget about it, dont worry about it and it will go.
This is the funniest thing I’ve ever seen. I too am a twitcher – right upper eye. I too came to find help and information and found a great site with some pretty funny stuff. Who cares about the twitching, glad to know I’m not alone and my theories about stress are once again substantiated.
Twitch away baby! dont ya love it. well its my right eye and i must be about to find a pot of gold but the thing is i dont think i will be able to see it due to the dern twitch twitch every 2 seconds. i work on the computer allday dont sleep well eat junk drink booze smoke cigarettes but surely all that isnt to blame. i mean how am i gonna give any of that fun stuff up. stressed out man. oh the occasional eyeball ache goes along with it usually. maybe i should wear my glases like i’m supposed to, but i havent worn those in 2 yrs. maybe us twitchers are just freaks.
My left eye has been twitching occasionally for the past 2 days.. In medical health term, I ain’t that concerned unless it continues for a month..
However, I was wondering how it is related in the mythical way.. example upper left eyelid twitching means good/bad luck etc..
Please share your experience people!! My intuition says something bad is coming my way.. Any consolation in that?
Hi fellow twitchers–can anyone relate:
My left eyelid has been twitching for almost 3 years now– probably every single day. (I can’t keep track of the # of times…) Very rarely it has switched to the right lid.
I learned to live with it until I was putting on my mascara one day and realized that it was my EYEBALL and not just my eyelid! Eek! Now I stand really far away from people in conversations because I’m scared they will see it.
The most bizarre thing is the way they started. I had a series of bad sinus/ear infections for a couple years with headaches above my left eye. One day I was walking in the parking lot at work and I’m pretty sure I had a “partial focal seizure” as this website describes my episode exactly:
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000697.htm
“Abnormal sensations
Numbness, tingling, crawling sensation, etc.
May occur in only one part of the body or may spread
May occur with or without motor symptoms
Hallucinations (visual, hearing, touch, SMELLS, etc.)
Abdominal pain or discomfort
Nausea
Sweating
Flushed face
Dilated pupils
Rapid heart rate/pulse
Other symptoms:
Black out spells — periods of time lost from memory
Changes in vision
Sensation of deja vu (this was very, very strong)
Changes in mood or emotion”
It was very intense and scared me so much that I immediately told my coworkers. They looked at me like I had three eyeballs, so I went to the internet.
I had two more of these “seizures” a few weeks later but have no big ones since. However, there is a vague pressure in my left eye/facial area that often makes me feel like I’m on the verge of one.
It’s time to go to the dr, but I have HMO insurance; I’m almost more afraid that they’ll run tons of tests and write me off as a crazy hypochondriac!
Please let me know if this sounds familiar to you so I can go to the dr’s office armed with similar stories.
Thanks! 😉

I now have two twitchers on the go … my left upper lid is pulling left and my right lower lid is pulling right.
I am in existential dread as to what this can possibly portend. Will I experience good luck then crushing defeat? Wealth the poverty? Maybe they just cancel each other out … in which case WHAT IF ONE STOPS???
There’s more to this eye-twitching milarky! Strange occult forces are at work and haven’t they always said that the eyes are the windows to the soul?
Hi guys, I am back. My upper left eyelid is still twitching for three weeks now. I am convinced it is related to stress and anxiety. However, I was twitch free for thirty years so I dont know why it happend all of a sudden. Plus, everyone I have talked to has had this problem in the past so we are all not alone. Good luck everyone!
My left eye started twitching on Saturday. During the long weekend I got PLENTY of sleep. I really don’t feel any more stressed than normal. I called my eye doctor and he said it was probably stress or a lack of sleep… That they get calls on it daily (so I guess it is more common than one would think – this site proves it!). He said if it continues for more than a month, to come in and get it checked out. He also said that they used to prescribe Benedryl before it was over the counter to help people get a good night’s sleep (apparently just getting a lot of sleep doesn’t cut it… Quality versus quantity).
If it’s still bothersome in a month he said they could do Botox to temporarily paralyze the muscles and stop the twitching…. I think I’d rather have the twitch, but if it’s still here a month from now I may reconsider! Besides, maybe it will stop the progression of crow’s feet!
I felt a pulsing spasm on my lower left eye lid this morning, and looked closely in the mirror to discover it was twitching. I freaked out for a moment, then immediately got on the web to google my condition. Needless to say, I am somewhat thankful to see this appears to be a common condition. In my case I have been drinking lots of sodas, getting irregular sleep, stressing about some work I have due, and not taking my vitimins. So thank you all very much for the advice. Its funny, I bought some bananas out of the blue just yesterday, which I don’t do very often. Perhaps my body was trying to tell me something. I’m going straight to the kitchen for those bananas now….
I just got back to MN from New Zealand, the nastiest jet lag experience ever, 11 days and counting!, and now I have some sort of cold/congestion thing, too much sleep too, so I think the eye lid twitch is from the virus, whatever it is. The whole travel thing caught me unprepared for immunity protection, 47 hours travel time, crossed the internatioal date line and 17 hours difference, so my internal schedule is screwed up, sleep sucks, so immune deficiency screams OBVIOUSLY! Sauna’s have helped a bit… Good luck to all, y’all!
We are just lauging our heads off.. david here has had an ongoing twitch in the upper right lid for about a month now that is really bothering him- so we decided to check it out online and stumbled onto this site.
Thought we would share a joint twitching experience…
I was at a time a carpenter working in Alaska out in the country where the mosquitos are the state bird. My morning ritual was this: wake up, smoke a cigarette, drink coffee and have a short bath with DEET repelant. Was’nt long after that the TWITCHING started. I was really affected by it, not to mention the danger on roofs and such.
To my shock, Heather started complaining to me of her own case of the dreaded twitch.
Well upon further examination of our bug repelant, it turns out that DEET causes muscle spasms.
Just keep that in mind all you outdoorsy twitchers.
Well, who would have believed that so many of us twitch involuntarily?
I’m a right-handed upper-left eyelid case…and I’m not alone, I see by many posts here! My new job became extremely stressful a couple of weeks back and my eyelid began to twitch many times per day, but only for a few seconds at a time.
I’m going to try the water remedy. Wish me luck.
Here’s winking at you!
my second day of constant eye twitching. by constant i mean it doesn’t stop! and if it does, only for a few seconds and it will continue. this is my second day of eye twitching and i was beginning to worry. but after reading this forum, thankfully it isn’t that rare. this is the first time it has ever happened to me before, hopefully some of the remedies above will work.
Me: right eye brow twitcher. No caffiene, no dietry defficiencies, lot’s of bananas in diet, good sleep, although lots of stress.
I’m looking forward to seeing a discussion forum setup, there’s obviously a need for it!
OK…. Here is my case study…
Before weight loss…… eye twitch present, along with the usual heart palpatations, inability to walk while breathing or breath while walking, lack of energy, etc.
Lost 79 lbs (Low Carb)…. eye twitch gone completely, no heart palpatations, walking 1.5 miles every day, tons of energy, maintain weightloss for over a year…
Out of the Blue: I broke my ankle…. lost mobility, low grade depression sets in, 3 surgeries – 3 screws and a pin and over a year of trying to get back on my feet (literally)
Gain 40 lbs back (High Carb)… eye twitch returns and is triggered mostly by yawning, heart palpatations back,no exercise stuck in a dark pit again…
I believe I am ready to work on the weight again, if not for anything besides getting rid of this spastic eye lid…
God Bless and good luck fellow twitchers
Add me to the list. My right eye, upper lid was twitching for a while off and on. Now its moved to the lower eye lid. I thinks its from stress, lack of sleep, and poor diet because I am a college student. It goes away when I sleep but comes back in the middle of the day. Just remember it could be worse:)
I have to go with potassium. After a strenuous workout last night, I woke up feeling very sore. My bottom right eyelid was twitching.
The twitching hasn’t been around for a while, so I have to link it the torn muscles. Plus, I’ve been off of my banana at lunch diet.
Oh, man. What an immense site this is. Thankful for it. Good to know I am not alone. I am a very sad girl. After approximately six months of lower-right-lid twitching, I am ready to take the small ice cream scoop in the cutlery crock out in my kitchen and GOUGE away, until I am twitchless, until I am spasmless, until I am —- right-eye-less. Why? Why? Damn twitch, why? I have found myself styling my hair in ridiculous ways so that a little swatch will fall seductively over my right eye and conveniently hide the shameful 24-hour-a-day tic. Nearly convinced of brain tumor… until I found this site … thank you, thank you, for the comfort. There are many of us. Somehow good to know. Of course, may still be brain tumor, but no headaches or phantom smells, so probably stress, no? Thanks guys. Good luck. Same to me.
I have been twitching in the lower right eyelid for a week now, every 30 mins for a few seconds. been eating marmite like a monster (full of vit B12), sleep has not been the best, could be stressed, have had more caffeine than i would normally the last 2 weeks, diet has been pretty rubbish too. So thats explains my twitchyness. Looks like I know what I’ve got to do, although i might miss it when its gone……
WELL THIS IS GREAT. WE ALL HAVE NOTHING BETTER TO DO THAN LOOK UP AN EYE TWITCH! I ALSO HAVE HAD MY LEFT UPPER EYE AND EYEBROW TWITCH FOR THE PAST WEEK NOW! I THOUGHT FOR SURE THAT THERE WAS SOMETHING WRONG WITH ME. I REALLY NEED SOME KIND OF SOLUTION FOR THIS, BECAUSE I CANT HARDLY HANDLE IT. WELL ANYWAY I GUESS THERE ARE PROBABLY HUNDREDS OF OTHER PEOPLE WITH THIS PROBLEM TOO. GOOD LUCK TO YOU ALL AND I HOPE THIS STOPS SOON! LITTLE BETTER FEELING THAT THERE ARE OTHERS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. KIND OF WEIRD THAT ALL OF US HAVE A LEFT EYE TWITCH THOUGH RIGHT?
My right top eyelid has been “tremoring” for a week now. Glad to see I’m not alone, but sorry to see there are so many of us! Mine only shakes when I’m looking down and lid is half closed. Its not intermittent, but constant. I was starting to worry about Parkinsons or something equally as awful. I can’t stop rubbing my eye now to make it stop. I’d hate to go to the dr. for something so seemingly trivial. So if everyone that has written something so far is still alive I guess I’m ok. Thanks for the site.
Upper left lid eyetwitcher here for the last month and half. Driving me nuts! I’ve done nearly everything I’ve read on this site (eliminated all caffeine, including chocolate; eating bananas; taking magnesium, potassium, calcium, B-complex, tonic water with quinine; getting more sleep; using warm and cold eye compresses; eye drops, etc.), but I can’t seem to reduce the stress entirely, which I think is the root of all this. I’ve increased my visits to the gym (cardio, yoga, stretching, resistance training), I’m actually taking some time to monitor my breathing, and I have a massage club membership. I don’t know what else to do.
I must say that the occurances and duration of the twitching has decreased noticably. I no longer wake up and have a twitching eye greeting me GOOD MORNING!!
Hang in there everyone, it will get better.
During Christmas and New Years I had an upper respiratory infection that lasted for 3 weeks plus. My sister-in-law and brother-in-law also had it, one right after the other.
I mentioned to my sister-in-law that my eyelid had been twitching for weeks. She said hers had and her brother had complained of his doing the same. We were wondering if anyone has thought this maybe be the after affects of the viral infection we all had. Any ideas? Any cures?
My eye twitches started in November 06. It’s affecting both my eyes, but moreso my right.
I’m a contact lens wearer and thought that might be the problem. I can certainly identify with dry eyes, fatigue, over-caffeine, and stress. So they could all be the culprits, but my eyes are twitching almost non-stop.
I’m going to the store now to purchase the Bausch & Lomb Moisture Eyes. I’ll also purchase the other supplements when I have time, especially the MSM. Hopefully, they’ll help. I’ll post back my results with the drops later.
Oh my god,
Bless you all! This blog is a godsend. I haven’t laughed this hard in years! I too am a solitary twitcher. My left upper eyelid has been twitching steadily for about three months (ever since the advent of fall, 2006). Then my right eye wanted in on the action, so now the vein below my right eye just seems to throb constantly! It’s like something out of an Edgar Allen Poe story; it’s the Tell-tale Twitch! However, I only wish I knew for what terrible deeds the Twitch is reproaching me.
I have a stressful, soul-killing job. The twin environments (work, home) to which I have been subjected this winter have forced me to endure relentless volumes of mercilessly arid air. I also was on a low carb regime and lost many pounds rapidly, all of which I since have regained (and then some) as a result of the stress from the afore-mentioned soul-murdering job that I have been forced by recent unfortunate circumstances to endure. And yes, I consume gallons of diet pepsi (caffeinated, thank you), to keep me alert and ward off the imminent existential mind-coma my psyche has all but succumbed to. Then, after work, I have been known to consume a moderate amount of liquor (mostly in the form of light beer and wine) to inure me to the harsh realities of my intolerable fate. I detest bananas, but I have been making a half-hearted effort at taking multivitamins, though apparently to no immediately useful effect.
Anyway, I must admit that I don’t mind the Twitch so much. Now that I know it’s not fatal or disabling, and that I am in uncommonly good company, it amuses me beyond measure. Happy twitching, everyone!
I used to take a wet wash cloth and put it in the microwave for 10 seconds then immediately put it on my face and closed eyes. I think that this might help … I’m going to give it a try.
Last time, however, I didn’t wash the cloth thoroughly between uses and it gave me conjunctivitus … I should have realised that heating, cooling, heating, cooling etc would be a very good breeding ground for bacteria. This time I will make sure that the cloth is cleaned thoroughly; I have no wish for conjunctivitus and eye-twitching.
Wow! The Bausch & Lomb Moisture Eyes really work! The twitching is almost non-existent! It started working IMMEDIATELY. I’m still going to cut down on the caffeine and sodas (coke mostly). And try giving my eyes a break from the computer. But the B&L Moisture Eyes has helped. The twitching was becoming nerve wracking!
Hi everyone, I am back for the umpteenth time on this site. Well, my eye stopped twitching once I cut out all vitamins as I was taking way too many. My doctor suggested that all we really need is one good multi vitamin. I was suffering from anxiety and panic attacks which made the twitch much worse. To add to all of this, I figured out that I had an eye allergy due to the winter weather. I used some prescription drops called patenol and that helped as well. I definately think that stress and anxiety along with caffeine and sugar makes it worse. So dont worry everyone the twitch will go away. I know people that had it for six months!
Im MY case, I’ve found that notoriously high-fat foods, such as cheeseburgers, pizza, french fries, full-fat dairy, mayonaise, cheese-based dressings, vending machine snacks and absolutely anything deep-fried, never, ever fail to exacerbate (BIG TIME) the eye tics and other facial spasms.
There was a brief period in the past when I tried the LOW-CARB fad diet which left me with meat, cheese and other dairy products and the facial tic problem became horrendously bad.
Avoid these culprits and stick with sensible, bland, boring foods like raw fruits and veggies with a sparing dab of lemon or vinegaret dressing and protein foods like baked/broiled fish and fowl with a dash of lemon pepper. Avoid, like the Black Plague, ANY fried foods. Basically, eat like a professional fashion model. These are all food choices which would get the enthusiastic seal of approval from Jack LaLanne.
My personal experience has been that facial tics have been WAY less of a problem when sticking with this latter regimen.
Readers, keep me posted whether or not this works for YOU. I’d be very interested.
I am 39 years old and have been dealing with an eye twitch(Lower left) since the age of 16!! I went to Dr.s time after time, had MRI’s. No one had has had an explanation…It starts and lasts for a few days..then stops for a few days.. the only relief I get, believe it or not is ICE!! I don’t mean the drug, I mean the CUBE!! It dosn’t make it stop forever, but it might give you temporary relief when you need a break…
Just place an ice cube on your lid until it’s numb or you can’t stand it anymore…
When I was a teen-ager I tried everything short of suicide to stop the insanity. I’ve heard that BOTOX was used to stop muscle spasms before it became a cosmetic treatment. People with facial muscle spasms just happened to notice the side effects (reduced wrinkles) and THEN Botox became what it is today..
I haven’t tried it yet…I should. But I’ve lived with it so long it doesn’t really bother me anymore..I don’t sleep any more or any less than any one else. I drink coffee and I drink alcohol…Maybre not too good. But I work out, have great sex, look young for my age and love life..I get stressed…Who doesn’t???
Re: Katherine, I’ve tried ICE and yes it works, but only TEMPORARILY. It leaves much to be desired insofaras LASTING relief. Also, I’ve noticed NO correlation whatsoever between my consumption of coffee and the frequency of tic symptoms.
I too have dealt with an annoying eye twitch from time to time, but a few years back, I started to have the eye twitch combined with a very obvious lip twitch. It was very visible to anyone that was looking at me and not only was annoying but looked very bizarre. I also had other symptoms such as nerve pain running up my arms and numbness to the side of my face. Then after a few days I realized that my leg would involuntarily twitch.
I did go to the emergency room because by then I was completely freaked out. After some blood tests at the hospital, I was diagnosed with a magnesium deficiency.
I just want to let people know that just to see if it helps, be sure to take a multi vitamin daily in combination with a healthy diet.
It may just be an eye twitch, but if you’re not getting all of the valuable nutrients that your body needs, you may start to experience a lot of other annoying symptoms in addition to the eye twitch.
I now take a regular multi-vitamin and I haven’t had any twitching since.
Here is the story. Two years ago my left lower eyelid started twitching. At the beginning it was only a pulse and then the twitch.I noticed that after alcohol consume the problem was worst. The twitch is continous for 3 weeks maximum. But i have it almost all the days of the month. And now the twitch is on the right lower eyelid.Hopefully is not at both eyes at the same time.It started after a very stressed day.But i feel stressed all the time.I have to see a neuro-psychiatrist because its getting worst.I feel sad about this .There must be a solution out there. What do you think?
Hi everybody, one of our fellow twitchers mentioned a while back that it could be early signs of altzimers desease, now is there any research or fact relating to this? does anyone know? very worrying!!
sitting here with ice pack in situ waiting for a miracle. left lower started on xmas eve and i have to say I have become obsessed with it. This is probably the problem an a viscious circle has developed. Got stressed so got the twitch the twitch causing stress and worry so the twitch persists. Dont seem to feel reassured by comments or what I have read and keep thinking it must be a neural problem. Just wish it would go.
I had 3 years of constant eye twitching. I tried phenobarbital for a couple years & it helped some. I quit my special education job and started knitting. It was the stress and being beat up by violent autistic kids. I am twitch free except for extreme stress situations. I am glad there are other eye twitchers out there. The doctors don’t take it seriously.
Wow! It’s not just me! It’s an epidemic! Well, I thought I’d add what Louise Hay has to say:
eye problems:
probable cause: not liking what you see in your own life
new thought pattern: I now create a life I love to look at.
tics, twitches:
probable cause: Fear; a feeling of being watched by others.
new thought pattern: I am approved of by all of Life. All is well. I am safe.
Happy creating, everyone!
I ve just came from a neuro-psychiatrist.He gave me three different medicines. All of them is for stress and anxiety.I am sure that is it is stress effect. So we have to control ourselves.
I started to have long lasting eyelid twitches when I quitted Paroxetine (without my doctors’ approval). I was taking a very low dosage (10mg) for a short period of time (3 months), so I decided it was ok to stop the treatment since I was feeling ok and I was bothered about the delayed orgasms (I was very slow already!). Then the twitches started, and they happen many times in a day, for long periods. This has been happening for the last month.
I eat 120 bananas per month besides lots of milk and soy. I do get plenty of sleep and I never drink coffee.
If that doesn’t stop in the next month I will get really worried!
Our doctor spoke to a neurologist who specializes in eye twitches among other things. He said that a germ causes it. He uses zithromax 500mg (azithromycin) for a longer period of time (I don’t know how long.) and finds it very helpful. This same zithromax 500 is used for some cases of OCD (for example – when a child complains of fears and recurring unpleasant thoughts). This OCD is believed to be brought about by strep in the blood (even without a sore throat) which is attacking the nervous system. The antibiotic is used for several months. (Other antibiotics, even those generally effective for strep don’t work. Zithromax, which helps for eye tick and twitches, often does help.) Probiotics, garlic and yogurts should be taken at the same time.
Specific chiropractor treatments (Specific chiropractic treatment is a type of chiropractic treatment which specializes in adjusting the bone connecting the head with the spine.) will at times also help and relieve the need for long-term antibiotic use.
I started getting frequesnt upper eyelid twitches, and I think its due to my prolonged ours of computer gameplay :(!
I hope the darn thing goes away.. goodluck with everyone elses bitchy twitchies…
Trying drinking the purple Vitamin Water. It has potassium and b-vitamins.

about the “same” annoying eye-twitch i am having, from all over the world…
(I’m from Sri Lanka)
well, it MUST be stress. Good luck people
Its a world full of eye twitchers, am from Kenya(Africa), my twitch is two weeks old and even though I dont drink, my stress level are under control. Someone talked about plucking one or two eye lashes, let me see if it works!!!!!
hi, so glad to find this site! My left upper eyelid has been twitching for a couple of weeks, about 10-15 times a day, and last about 5 seconds. No pain, but HIGHLY ANNOYING!!! Being a certified hypochondriac (self-diagnosing is my hobby!), iI thought maybe it was a stroke on the way. Glad to see it is so common and that i’m not the only one with this problem. I just love the internet, you can always find people just like you out there! thanks for all these posts, and good luck to all of us!!!! TWITCH,TWITCH, TWITCH!!!!
This is hysterical!!!. I am a left lower lid twitcher with my eyes watering every morning about 10 minutes after I wake up. My twitch lasts about 5 secs every several hours. I don’t drink caffeine, I do eat bananas and I am in front of a computer over 10 hours a day. This happened once before over 15 years ago . That time it came and went away on it’s own after about a month so I am just waiting for it to leave again. Personally I think this is the “exorcist” twitch. There are only so many in the world and we just keep passing them around to others. I agree with those who say to embrace our twitches. Think of them as multiple orgasms of the eye. Makes it more palitable. Good luck!!
Luis, I love your sense of humor. You should be a syndicated columnist. Someone mentioned low-carb diets, mine started about the same time I started my diet three weeks ago and it’s relentless! Thankfully it’s just one eye so I can pretend I’m winking –
I too am a”twithcer”! Started about a month ago, and fades in and out day to day or hour to hour. When I’m working or just doing something it’s not there, but when I’m not, yatzee. I’ve been very stressed and started having panic attics, my diet isn’t perfect, but I’m a home remodeler, and get plenty of excersise. Good to here others are out there. I’m going to try the multiday and a better diet, but it’s very hard to reduce stress in my work and somewhat in my family life.
my left upper eyelid has been twitching from time to time usualy only when i blink alot or not enough so i tryed some remedies like eating tons of bananas and potasium enriched stuff, layed of the coffie and laxatives for a week or two but still didnt help.the only thing that stopped it for a while was sleeping at least 12 to 15 hours and not thinking about my eye twitching which is almost immpossible to do so if anybody has any new remedies for the twitchy itchy irritating distracting make you want to tear your eyelid off goodness email me please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi Everyone,
I have been having twitchings for the past 7 years and Mine is little bit different than you guys. When I have a eyelid twitchings, my eyelid muscles gets weak permanently, it happens both upper eyelids and lower eyelids, when it starts twitching I know it is slowly killing my small muscle fibers in my eyelids. It attacks like once every 2-3 months. How do I know?,,Because I can see the drooping on my upper eyelids, and They don’t get better over time it just progressive some king of neurological disorder, my eyelid almost feels like there is small piece of Scotch Tape on my eyelid skin, I also have twitching all over my body, I have been to couple of Neurologists and they don’t know what to tell me they even tell me there is nothing wrong with me. One neurologist did a EMG muscle test and saw some abnormalities but couldn’t come up with names. I took Vitamin B12 B6 Folic Acid and it did help me for 5 months I was symptom free I taught I was cure , I was so happy, but my happiness was short lived, my eyelids started twitching again and I knew it was gonna leave some weakness again it did it to corner of my right upper eyelid so frasturating, I just open up my problems to yo guys, I wish I only had benign eye twitchings…. Good Luck to You Guys…..
7 weeks of lower left twitch but happy to say it appears to be on its way out. A flutter now rather than a vigarous movement from side to side. For me, Benadryl (over the counter antihistamine) seemed to be the turning point. Been taking one at night and thats when they became less frequent and became a short flutter. Tried absolutely everything else with no luck. Obviously it may have been on the way out anyway who knows but worth a try. Always check the leaflet before taking as not suitable for all. Be interested to see if anyone else has success with it.
Nearly Cured Overnight!!!
My right eyelid twitching has practically stopped – after on and off for about three weeks and getting worse . . . I think it is because I finally bothered to get a better pillow and to make sure the computer monitor was in the right position. (look up ergonomics in Google)
So thanks to everyone and especially Aran Nathan, whose post in 2004 here on this list woke me up to the problem:
“””2. I think my problem and that for some people on this list is a pinched nerve in the neck – try a massage and more importantly change your pillow – if you are stressed, or work out heavily- your sleeping posture is rigid as is your neck – try the tension headache pills – if they work – it means coffee is not your problem but your friend – all these drugs have caffeine.”””
I had this problem before a few years ago when I stayed up all night writing a computer program for school, so thought it was from being tired. BUT I OFTEN STAY UP ALL NIGHT. The difference: I had a stiff neck then – Stress & Tension probably caused me to just stay in one awkward position working and working . . . rather than taking breaks and looking around.
If you are sleeping more to try to fix this, on a bad pillow, or falling asleep on the sofa without a good pillow, you could be making it worse.
(p.s. I’ve also been trying to drink more water and I’ve been taking vitamins (which is good to do anyway) but those did not seem to be helping.)
Eye twitches have decreased immensely! I’ve done the following, which I think has helped my overall well-being:
-eliminated all caffeine
-eating healthier
-reduced consumption of chocolate to about a few times a week
-sleeping 8+ hours a day
-taking complex-b, potassium, magnesium, calcium, zinc, cod liver oil, and vitamin c
-exercising
-doing yoga and relaxation techniques
-using stress management techniques, like deep breathing, meditation, etc.
-limiting hours in front of computer
Bottom line, it is about STRESS MANAGEMENT and RELAXATION. I know it is easier said than done, but you must take the time and effort to de-stress and relax if you want to be rid of the eye twitches.
Upper right twitcher joning the incredible throng – seem to be more upper lefts – wonder why that is. No-one else seems bothered as I am, that I’m petrified someone’s going to think I’m making a pass at them – or worse, someone’s girlfriend thinks I’m winking at her bloke and comes over and socks me one – mind you, if she caught me in the eye that could cure it. I was out with a fellow eye twitcher recently- (hers was upper left) and I swear the twitches were in time with each other. We both used the technique of pulling the eyelid down with a finger to stop the trembling- no doubt we’ll get accused of being politically incorrect by trying to make our eyes look slanty.
strange.. a part of my chin keeps twitching and u can see it pulse probably to much caffeine as i had 3 cans of rockstar energy drink last night
hello eye twitchers.
had it for a couple of weeks now (upper left eye lid, several times a day for a few seconds).
maybe this info will help. things i’ve done differently leading up to the start of the twitching…
2 months ago – “improved my diet” by reducing carbs, increasing salad, decreasing red meat.
2.5 months ago – started low dose of duloxetine (antidepressant)
feeling very good and healthy aside from annoying twitch.
i am an anxiety sufferer so maybe it is just a new symptom of that.
i also work as a graphic designer on an lcd display. eye strain?
Hi, guys —
My left lower eyelid has been twitching frequently throughout the day for several weeks now. I have no clue as to why this is happening, and it’s very annoying. I have always taken a multivitamin, and I never drink coffee. I’m not under stress (I’m retired and love this stage of life) and get as much sleep as I want.
It’s reassuring to know that others have this condition, but I sure wish we could find out what cures it!
Well, I said before it was nearly cured, but it is back now more often but less dramatic.
I’m going to try to follow Theresa’s advice now.
This is -very- annoying. I don’t think I can spend the rest of my life taking good care of myself. It is just so boring.
I am worried about seeming to wink . . . I think that may have happened in one case already!
Now my eye feels tired too, in the back . . . hrm . . . I guess I went back to my old habits including bad ergonomics . . .
Let’s all prey for a cure (even though there are probably other things that need cures more . . . ) Well, we can prey for those too, while we’re at it 😉
It happened to me half a year go and it was twitching for over a week. It drew me nuts. Eventually I decided to sleep little more and it went away. Today, it came back, just a half hour ago and twich,…twich… goes on again.
Recently I didn’t sleep much, ate only sporadically and drink lot of coffee and smoked too…
Body is probably trying to tell me something…I will have to change my habits looks like.
My twitch has become pretty constant. But this morning it has been gone again, even when I’m working at the computer, which is when it usually gets worse. This is what I did and will keep doing and will let everyone know results:Flaxseed & Cod Liver Oil (theory: lubrication for eyes; this happens more often in winter; dry eyes; someone told me that you have to watch out to make sure you don’t end up with too much vitamin A when taking this.Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium TabletsLots more WaterMore SleepBetter Pillow & Better Ergonomics – not looking UP at computer screen, looking slightly downward instead (theories from folks above: search page for “pinched nerve” and separately for “chiropractic”)Olive Leaf Extract & Oregano Oil (It case it is a germ: search page for “germ” and separately for “strep”. I do have a tooth infection I’ve been ignoring . . .) Guess I’ll go to dentist as well . . .
Absolutely hilarious that we are still posting to this thread 3+ years later! Damn the Twitch! (upper right; fortune for me:)
Under my left eye started twitching a week ago. It is constant. I don’t really feel it unless I concentrate on it, but it is very noticeable to others. Embarrassing!!! I thought I was too tired, so I have increased my sleep. I can sleep for 10 hours and it is twitching when I get up. I have been under stress, but no more than usual. I work on a computer all day ever day, but I have for 20 years. I take vitamins and Relacore for stress, which is loaded with B vitamins. My grandkids think it funny, but I sure don’t. I have started wearing dark glasses out in public, so people don’t look at me weird. I am going to make an appt with my physician. Will let you know what he says.
Upper left for me. When I get it, it seems to occur fairly regularly for a few weeks or so. Soon to be out of work so maybe I’m a little stressed looking for a new fool to take me on, though I think of myself as quite a layedback person. My sleep patterns can be erratic at times but I always seem to be up early and asleep late, probably average 6hrs sleep a day (have been known to sleep walk and talk in sleep a lot, though I don’t know if this actually effects the amount of rest your body gets). Coffee can often comprise a large part of my fluid intake, but drink plenty of the rest (water, juice, tea etc). Good, varied diet and fairly regular excercise. I used to walk to work every day but stopped recently to get more sleep beleive it or not.
Nice and informative site by the way. It’s always good to find out you’re maybe not so weird as you think. No plans for world domination as yet, but I’m keeping my options open.
Greetings, fellow twitchers! With me its the upper-left eye lid. Been going on for a week or so now and seems to be set off with a good old yawn. It makes me quite self-conscious but looking in the mirror its not as visible as other twitches I can imagine suffering from. When considering the possible ‘guilty suspects’ there are so many. Dietary and exercise wise I’m a bit of a lardy lump though not hugely overweight. I could definately improve on that aspect. My age (I’m 39) and stress levels (I’m a worrier) could also be to blame I suppose. I’m a glasses/contacts wearer too and do a lot of computer work. As for sleeping, well I’ve just done a stint of night shifts but usually I can drop off propped up in a corner if need be. I work as a staff nurse and it hardly inspires confidence among my clients when I’m twitching away like an evil sadist!
Help me, Obi Wan Kenobi! You’re my only hope!
Well, my left eyelid started twitching yesterday and never stopped. I’m 39, with a high stress level. My job requires me to be on a computer for at least 8 hours a day. I wear contacts and glasses and do not get enough sleep. The twitching is very annoying. I feel like everyone can see this happening, but when I looked into a small mirror today while the twitching was occuring, I didn’t notice it at all. I guess I have to deal with this until it stops. Ahhhh, I forgot to mention that I don’t eat healthy and I’m overweight by 100lbs.
I am going to try the remedies posted by Lilly 2/18/07.
Hello, Everyone. My name is Marilyn and I am a twitcher.
Gees, I’ve been twitching CONSTANTLY for about 6 days and thought that was a long time. Now I know it can go on for decades! This could be the beginning of a really lousy relationship.
Statistics:
Inner upper left eye, progressing to occasional outer upper left eye. Today the upper left cheek decided to join the party for a while. Like dueling bongos, but I’m sure no one else notices. It’s especially annoying when I’m trying to go to sleep, kind of like having noisy neighbors.
I’ve been going to the gym regularly for 11 months, so nothing new there. Drink plenty of water. Drink caffeine, but not a lot. Got a 24 hr stomach virus about a day after the twitching started…could be a connection. I teach chemistry and physics at an inner city public high school. No stress there… Also wonder if the extra chocolate around Valentine’s day has something to do with it. I’ll let you know after I’ve finished it.
Upper left twitch for past 4 months. I asked my dentist if he had any ideas on it and said it’s very common and caused by tension. He suggested deep breathing exercises and relaxation techniques. This seems to be helping. I then had a thought – could it be caused by lack of fresh-air? When I’m out dog walking the twitch seems to ease up! Are all twitchers working in confined spaces with little air or do we have some outdoor twitchers..?
Thank God I am not alone!!!!!
My right upper eyelid twitches and I thought I had a brain tumour coming on.
Now I know I might just be depressed, overstressed, and eating the wrong things.
Goody.
But at least I might not have brain cancer…
I have the same annoying problem. My upper right eyelid keeps twitching very slightly. If I relax my eyes and do not squeeze them together (like you do when the sun is really bright) it actually stops twitching. So maybe you guys can also try just relaxing the face and eyelids. Pretend you are about to fall asleep for about one hundred and twenty seconds.
Fellow twitchers, I have longed to find you!!!!
Luis, I thought I would have another twitching episode when I got up from the floor after laughing hysterically at your host-post.
Thank you, and everybody who has posted on this site, for relieving the panic that had set in since last Saturday when I had the first twitch ever (I had gone straight to cancer of the eyelid or early signs of parkinsons in my raised panic and utter fear level). I am a upper left eye twitcher (so that earlier post about “something bad will happen” is not so good). The irony is that the very day I had my first twitch I happened to attend a Saturday evening church service, while there the Pastor gave me a prophetic word (no world doom or calamity, but actually an exciting proposal of a new career). I’m on the East Coast and wear low prescription glasses. I misplaced them back in December so I went for a long period of squinting.
When I had my first twitch last Saturday, I went out and bought new glasses that day wondering if that was the cause. I had begun to grow suspicious of my everloving daily need for Pepsi and thank you God–Energy drinks, but I didn’t want to acknowledge that they might be the cause. To do so would require way too much of my very simple lifestyle as a schoolteacher in the christian educational system (if sex is indeed the cure as many have suggested in earlier posts, I’m going to have a lot of explaining to do). But oh, worse than I could have ever imagined, your host-post suggests it is the caffeine that even I initially suspected. The irony is that for the past 2 years, I had a regular morning breakfast of a banana and an energy drink together. I haven’t had a banana for about a week now, and suddenly twitching!!! So I will pledge to ween myself off of the stuff and move on to daily gallons of water intake and herbal teas with my breakfast of champions, a great sacrifice I might add.
Thank you everybody for all of your funny and very informative posts. It was also a relief to hear of other self examinations in the mirror during the twitching episode and desperate internal cries during twitching episodes while in conversations with students and others….”CAN THEY SEE IT???”
Luis, thanks so much for having the ABSOLUTE GREATEST of the 11 sites I went on when I took the embarassing, desperate and secretive journey to find a cure for “jumpy eyelids” on Google. LOL!
Pamela
P.S. I do find it an interesting coincidence that the posts on this site are primarily in January and February…..hmmmmm.
wow I found the twiching eye club:) After reading all your comments I have come to the conclusion that it must be caused by the flu/germ. /stress/ not enough well rested sleep. My left upper eye lid has been twitching off ,and on for two days. It scares me when I look in the mirror, and it moves on its own. I believe mine is caused by flu germ/stress. as for good luck/bad luck IF YOU BELIVE YOU ARE LUCKY YOU WILL BE
I hope everyones twiches go away. take care
I asked my 95 year old clever grandma what she thought was the cause, and she replied “blood pressure” hummmm she has been around along time to know these things. But anyways it could be from many different causes. take care
I am compelled to comment after reading everyone else’s.
The internet is so hilarious…mr. blogman, will you be my personal physician? Your bedside manner has made this all worthwhile. After reading this I feel less as though a stroke is imminent and more inclined to blame it on all the knitting I’ve been doing lately that’s brought on this 5 hours of solid upper right eyelid twitching I am presently experiencing. I feel more like laughing now than freaking out and plan to just have a hot shower and a glass of water.
thank you!!!!!
The eye twitching is caused by lack of sleep and stress. Eliminate both and it should go away on its own, no worries.
I asked a girl out on a date on a Wednesday night, 2 months ago. I was nervous, and was lacking sleep since it was the end of the semester. We went out on the following Saturday, and earlier that day my top right eye lid started twitching.
I don’t drink much caffeine.
It’s been twitching here and there for small amounts of time for the past 2 months (we stopped going out after a month).
I don’t know how to make it stop. If I find something that works for me, I’ll let everyone know.
good luck!
Not that anyone will read this after all my fellow brainstem neoplasim sufferers. It is a comfort to know that it’s common. Itfeels like vien is going all wild in my upper left eyelid along my eyelashes. I don’t know if anyone else can see it but I can feel it pulsate with my finger. Indeed it is the utmost irritating. I’ll have to try some of the suggested advice. Thanks!
Okay … from looking at all the posts it seems that the way to help cure the twitch is to eat right, sleep right, cut out cafeine etc etc.
Why can’t any of this be fun??? I am determined to invent my own cure for the twitch … something on the lines of sleeping late, playing computer games and watching films into the wee hours, drinking loads of coffee and alcahol and eating junk food. I think that it …. just … might … work!!!
or not!
I may die from heart problems and morbid obesity but at least I’ll be twitch free … twitch … twitch.
So I have this slight but noticeable twitch in my right eyelid, mostly at night…I Google it and, lo and behold, EVERYBODY has it!
May it will go away when Bush leaves office…
I’ve had a twitch in my left eyelid for over a year now but a few days ago it stopped………and immediately started in my right eyelid where it has stayed! Can someone explain that one?!
I do find it very annoying, partly as it seems to be in relation to an annoying constant tired feeling in the eyes. I don’t often feel very well rested, irrespective of how much sleep I get. I’m not stressed and don’t have much caffeine.
My eyelid twitch has come back after about 5 years. The last time I had was on the left eye and it was there on & off for 2 months. It went away automatically. I thought it was stress. Now I have again on my right eye. and it is there for about a month now. Even this time I think it is physical and mental stress. There are some things always on the back of the mind.. like need to do my taxes, have to take docs appointment, have to attend x party in the weekend.. just some daily stuff. It is definitely stress. To some extent I think it is stress on the eye itself looking into computer for 8 hours a day ( I am a programmer). Anyway I am happy that it is right eye this time. Good luck to all you twitchers…
omg ..i never dreamed so many people had eyelid twitching..mine started over a month ago..it twitches non stop while im awake and it is driving me NUTS!!!!!!!
I find it interesting as well as amusing that the info that I have found on several web sites about eye twitches for my wife refers to the same possible contributing causes. Namely …”CAFFEINE” since my wife is a avid STARBUCKS consumer. Her favorite is mocha venti with quad shots of espresso.
Then she reads that an eye twitch is supposed to mean that good luck is coming your way. So now she wants more STARBUCKS….someone please help me..
This is the first time I have seen this site. Glad I found it. I have gathered allot of info from you all. But here is my story. I have had Bells pausy 3 times and the doctors keep telling me that my random and sometimes vicious eye lid shuttering is caused by nerve damage in the side of my head caused by the Bells pausy. I think they are full of it, because I also have other multiple nerve shuttering and pains that all started at the same time,(shooting pains in the muscles of my upper arms and in my legs ) it is like someone sneaks up and stabs me in the arm, and in seconds my eye is twitching and then everything is gone the next minute. I had one doctor I met at a Bike ralley that sugested that I look into Aspartame as the culpret since I drink about 25 bottles of Wallmart water a week. So now I am thinking of having my blood checked and maybe spinal fluid also. ANY SUGESTIONS?????
Oh my God!! Wow!! i had constant left eye twitching for days. I didnt know what it was, so i decided to do research on it. And there, this comes up. Hey fellow twitchers, we should have a twitchers club. So now i seem
to conjecture its stress or depression or lack of fresh air…
thanx guys!
My upper right eyelid has been twitching EVERY NIGHT since 2004. Whenever I’m in my quiet room trying to read, write, draw, or even meditate it’s PSYCHOLOGICAL TORMENT trying to focus on something (or not focus on anything for that matter) when my mind is incessantly distracted by an extremely rapid, constant eye tic! Some days are worse than others, and yes alcohol, caffeine or lack of sleep DOES intensify the tics.
I’ve come close several times to cutting the inside of my eyelid in an attempt to sever the nerve or muscle, but decided to be patient and hope for a cleaner medical solution.
I’m going to get medical insurance, set up an appointment and try the subcutaneous botox injection, and if that doesn’t work hopefully I can get a myectomy (removal of the lid muscle).
I was telling my daughter to take a shower and get ready for bed when my lower right lid started twitching again. She asked me if I really wanted her to go to bed or was I just kidding? She noticed the twitch and thought I was winking at her!! Being the good mother that I am I tried explaining why it happened and realized that I really didn’t know and so we decided to look it up. To my wonderful surprise I found this website and discovered that laughter really is the best medicine. After reading all of your extremely witty posts, it’s gone again!
well, my eye twitching began yesterday.
and i keep on making a big deal out of it, because it’s really starting to worry me. but since my friends can’t feel it/see it they just tell me to ignore it.
IT DOESN’T WORK.
when you have your bottom right eyelid twitching every five minutes, it’s hell.
You crack me up – love the personality – thanks for the advise. I’m on my third week with Twitch McAvens here and I’m looking for a fix
Hey all.. Looks like i’m a new member for the eye twitchers club. My right eye has been twitching for the past couple of weeks off and on. Its starting to slowly drive me insane. I’ve had it a few times in the past but it has never lasted this long!!! Maybe I should use it as an excuse to go see my cute doctor. 😉
thank god i found your site i thought i was the only one.now i know its not the onset of a stroke maybe the damn thing will go away as i will not feel so stressed.but then again i had the twitch (lower left) before i thought it was a stroke.maybe its to do with to much brain activity,i will have to think about that one.anyway thanks for being there.
A guy followed me out of a bar the other night.
Bit scary! He thought I’d been giving him the c’mon.
He laughed when i explained that not only was I not “inclined” in his direction but that this infernal twich had gotten me here.
How come women never react to my twitch this way? The best I got was a nice lady sitting across the aisle in Costas the other day. She gave me a dirty look and shifted seats giving me her back!!
Thank god we don’t get these twitches in the trouser department. I’d be locked up for lewd behaviour!!
I think the comment about relief coming in the form of Bushs’ resignation definitely has substance!!
Lower right has been twitching for 6 months now – I treat it the same way as my pervy uncle Ted – Smile and ignore him in the secure knowledge that at some point he’s going to leave!!
PS: I discovered that forcing yourself to go VERY crosseyed, mid twich, often causes it to stop – for a while!!!
I’m so glad I found this blog. I’m usually nervous when I have symptoms to look up but this damn eye twitching is driving me nuts too – mine is the left upper eyelid. I can’t believe there are so many twitchers out there – twitch, twitch twitch – good luck to all of us!!! As they say “it could be worse.”
omg!!!! im going abolutely insane!!!–its been two weeks and it wont go away–i mean it happens now and again but this is rediculous–its hard talking to one of my patients and my eyelid is twitching and they are looking at me like i am crazy -lol—good luck to everyone you have my sympathy
My left lower eyelid has been twitching for about 3 weeks now. I am under stress, so i wouldn’t be surprised if that is the cause. I had my 2-year eye exam about a month ago, and am wearing new contacts/glasses under a very different prescription, so maybe there is some connection there too. I also was afraid of a a tumor lurking in my brian somewhere, mostly because I have daily headaches too. IF the symptoms worsen, I’ll see a doctor, but in the meantime I’ll hang out here with the rest of you twitchers!
Mine is the upper left lid and after reading this site, I’m coming to the conclusion it is stress related.
We all agree it’s hugely annoying. Mine’s been going on three or four weeks now. I do intake too much caffeine. However, at the beginning of Feb they told me I was losing my job at the end of the month. Fabulous!
Stress has to be causing this. And anxiety. Not only did I lose that job and am looking for another, one of our cars trashed itself (timing belt broke) and I had to get a new one, and I haven’t had a car payment to make in about 4 years. Someone stole my purse and I had to get all new ID’s. And recently I got a sinus and upper respiratory infection which wants to linger.
All I can hope for is more sleep, less stress and more vitamins and minerals. Then I’ll consider the caffeine route, but not until then
I have to have at least one vice while I’m on this planet
Good luck
Stress.
Lack of sleep.
Caffeine.
Over-wear of contact lenses?
I know the culprits and, as it has happened to me before, I also know that it WILL go away (and probably come back). I usually get it under the eye, now I have it in both upper lids. Variety is the spice of life.
Oh well – thanks for the site!
I too have got the left eyebrow twitch since the past two weeks. My son and friend noticed this too and its quite funny actually. I was getting worried and thought of looking at the website to check if at all anything serious. My guess is its coz of stress. Is there any remedy other than not being stressed out! I do sleep well and do not have coffee. I wear contact lenses and take them out at night. I look at my computer all the time when I am at work (but then again, I have been doing this since the last 20 odd years). Is there anything I have to be worried about?
Has anyone realized from reading this that almost all of the posts report of the left eye twitching….very odd. My left eye is also a victim. However it has been going on for 2 1/2 years. I have tried ignoring it until these past two months it has been getting extremely intense and is constant till I wake up in the morning till I go to bed. I am sure it is stress related but this problem is obviously not helping my stress at all. I am only 18 yrs. old but has always felt threatened with anxiety and unconditional stress since I was about 12. Today I just couldnt take it anymore and I went to go see my family doctor. All he said was that there is some kind of underlying problem I am having within myself that I am subcontiously reacting to it in a physical way. It makes perfect sense, like sometimes when people are really nervous they might literally throw up. They are not truly sick with a virus or anything it is just that there emotions are so strong that it is affecting them physically. I am led to believe that this is the same thing. He requested me taking up another hobby besides work and do something more physical like running, since I do very little of. I don’t know how much longer I could go on with the twitch though it is just interferring with my life too much and I am finding myself thinking and worrying about it every second of the day. This worrying is very most likely just feeding to the twitch hence my further worry of it never stopping!! Please any advice or comments would be greatly appreciated.
I want to rip my left lower eyelid off my face at this point. Its been 3 weeks and it doesn’t stop. I had this happen to me last year as well and it was ruining my golf game. Who could consentrate with a flap of flesh flapping into your eyeball… HELP!!!!!!!!!!!
WEEK 3!!!! WILL IT EVER END????
Be grateful its only week 3. I’m on month 7.
Hi my name is Jenn and I’m a “LET” left eye twitcher.
I hapy to know that I am not alone in my pain but, still not happy to know it could be with me for years! 2 months and counting if enough for me.
I am looking into the BOTOX has anyone tried it? Does it solve the problem and for how long? I’m desperate for a fix my eye is getting sore.
This is a message for Maria. I can completely understand how you feel and I have to say I got myself into such a viscious cycle of worry that I too felt my twitch would never go. I got so worried that in the end went to see a neurologist. He told me that it is caused by a wiring fault in some people and that in some people the facial nerve passes very close to the blood vessels such that they irritate the nerve and hence the twitch. It is never dangerous or serious and will always get worse with worry. Try not to let it wreck your life and you really must throw yourself into something and that way you will find when you stop thinking of it it will go. As for vitamins, eyedrops, homeopathy, potassium, magnesium, tonic water etc forget it. It is a physical thing and nothing will cure it only de-stressing and ignorning! It does not indicate anything serious underlying so discount brain tumours or m.s. Please be reassured its the only way you will rid yourself of it.
Good golly! This took me a long time to read all the blogs posted on here but I am so thankful I took the time. I am an upper left eyelid twitcher. I’ve had mine just over three months…. This feels like a AAA meeting… I suppose in one way we all have an addiction and it’s to the worrying over a freekin’ eye twitch.
I have to say a big THANK YOU to all of you have seen a neurologist or dr. about this and have passed on the information that you’ve learned. I have an anxiety disorder and so you can only imagine the crazy things my brain has come up with on what this is….my biggest fear… a brain tumor. I’m glad to know that I don’t need to worry. I have been in tears, many days, over this! UGGG!
My advice (and take it for what it’s worth)…. read all the blogs, they are a relief and it’s good humor. Second, I have been seeing a chiropractor and in just two treatments I have noticed a slowing of the eye twitch. If you are having neck discomfort I would strongly recommend seeing a chiropractor. The neck is where the nerves to your eyes are located. If there is anything pinched in there, it can cause eye twitching among other discomforts.
Here’s to finding our cures!!!
I have had upper right eyelid twitch for several days now, what I noticed from this site is that most people have left eye twitch… I am left handed and so automatically wonder if most people with left eye twitch are right handed and vic versa?
LV
Its kathy again.
I had a lower right eyelid twitch for over 7 months. i was working two jobs and in a bad relationship. the boyfriend left in sept. still had the twitch. then i booked a trip to Mexico in dec. about halfway through my trip the twitch stopped completely. i slept and ate like a pig and totally relaxed. i went on tours and laid in the sun for days. I didnt drink or smoke at all.
I came home to only one part time job.
Now im more stressed about money. but the twitch is gone. there is hope people. In the mean time i used a herb from Shoppers drug mart called Herbal Nerve. it would stop the twitch for about 4 hours at a time.
So I cut back on alcohol consumption…way back, now my damn eyelid twitch is driving me nuts. I drank a few drinks per day for years, now that I cut back to zero, for the last 8 days, damn eye drives me nuts as soon as I get on the computer at work….this weekend, had little to no twitching, soon as I get to work, starts up….
Ok, so after reading up on all this, I am going to go back to my daily alcohol consumption, it probalby was moderating my stress levels, ignorance is bliss.
Upper right eyelid; for 2 YEARS EVERY DAY… Can’t meditate or concentrate unless I turn the fan on or have some background noise to drown out the twitch.
I tried MSM Capsules because someone on here said it was their miraculous cure, but that didn’t work for me. I’ll just go to the opthalmologist and get Botox injections, but I heard those only work temporarily. Perhaps a myectomy (eyelid squeezing muscle removal) would be more effective.
Thank you!
My twitch is under the lower eyelid in the area of dark circle. )-: It appears to be a pulse that usually goes away with blood pressure lowering to a reading below 140 over 80.
hehehe, it’s my left eyelid also. It first happened (that I noticed) when i was about to come back from Bosnia in 1998. I just never paid attention to it until recently. It’s bugging the hell out of me.
Anyone have sinus pressure on the same side of the eye twitch? I’ve got major sinus pressure at times. I have some forgetfullness too, lately but have anxiety as well. Don’t know if anyone else has this with their twitch. Would help to hear if anyone does. I go through days where I feel like this is nothing and then the next day am convinced I have a brain tumor! Ughh. Neurology appointment not until next month!
More time to be scared, how nice.
I am one of the masses who found you after Googling my tremor. I found you to be very informative and hilarious.
Thank you,
Lindsay
someone help me!!!
my eyelid started twitching about 3 days ago and is non stop there are intermittent periods of nontwitching actvity all day…there is only about maybe 30-60 seconds for a brief pause and then on and on all day long….ive read everything about all of the vitamins..blah blah..cant take too many fat-soluble vitamins anyway…yes i am a stressed out nursing student..takes limited caffeine and i get 6-7 hours of sleep per night..should i take a trip to the opthamologist or does anyone else have any suggestions….
this post was a great source of amusement for the pregnancy message board that i go to! it was linked to me when i posted about my eye twitching for no apparent reason.
My right eyelid has been twitching NONSTOP now for 2 weeks and like everybody else, I am going NUTS! I am a breast cancer survivor so naturally I am thinking this must be a symptom of a brain tumor. Please, somebody tell me I’m crazy.
Yay! I’m not the only one! Whatta relief! My upper right eye lid has been twitching for about a week now and it’s pretty distracting. I limit my coffee intake to just one cup a day, and that’s instant coffee so it has less caffeine. I also have more than enough sleep.
Hello,
I’ve had left upper eye twitching for about a month now off and on throughout the day(never had it before this).I drink probably 4 or 5 sodas a day eat normal and excercise 4 or 5 days a week. After valentines day my wife had all kinds of chocalates laying around the house so I have been eating tons of it.Seems like this is the likely cause of the twitch….either that or stress (had loads of that lately too).
I have an appointment with a neurologist in a week, that would be week 3 of nonstop TWITCH. Is this the right kind of doctor to see? Or should it be an opthamologist? (My husband says psychiatrist would be more fitting)
wow…i am a college student who has had “eye twitches” off n on..my mom comes from a southern background where they believe your left eye twitching means someone is going to make you mad, while your right eye means something good is going to happen to you. my left eye, or upper eyelid/eyebrow, has been twitching since around thursday of last week..it is now tuesday and its SO irritating..i dont know whats up.. i dont have that great of a diet, i do drink, and i’ve been stressed out lately which causes me to not be able to sleep. these all could be factors but i dont know. i try to sleep more but i cant b/c i am stressed. what do you all suggest?
Very funny and informative article!
My eyelid only tremors when I’m planning world domination too.
Caution!!!!!
I rubbed my eyelid so hard that I gave myself a vitreous separation which in itself is benign, but now they are checking me weekly for a retinal detachment!!!! When i told the opthamalogist I was trying to rub the twitch out of my eye I am sure he thought I was completely nuts. So now I have floaters, black dots, weekly eye dr visits and STILL HAVE THE TWITCH!!!! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
My left eye has been twitching since January. It has never done this before and it’s only stopped for a week since January. I used to be really bad about not sleeping, too much caffine, stress, etc, but I haven’t been as bad lately. And that’s when I started twitching.
During the very infrequent times that my upper eyelid isn’t twitching, I develop a twitch in my chin or my upper left lip. That’s only happened twice so far, but I really don’t want to go to a doctor just for that.
I’ll try the more sleep, less caffine, go-crosseyed-occasionally approach first.
I am now a member of the eyelid twitching club. I, however have Multiple Sclerosis, so I hope that it will not be a forever thing. My MS symptoms come and go, so I am counting on it to just “go away”. I’m high stress, computer worker, and at least a bottle of coke a day kind of girl. My neuro said he would give me Klonopin for the twitches, but who knows. I just rub it thinking that the muscle will “relax”. I also have wierd ‘twitch’ above my ear on the same side. crazy!
I’m back.
I posted on here a year ago.. I’m “miss” from March 27,2006.
Nothing much has changed for me as far as my eye twithching goes and I’ve tried EVERYTHING since I was a teenager. I am now early 50’s.
I’m still convinced that these twitches are premonitions for me.
Left eye- good
Right eye- not so good
I’ve been to medical doctors looking for a physical reason as many of you here have.. and I’ve been to therapists and a psychiatrist for the emotional side of this.
NOTHING has helped me.
My next step now is to go to a priest.
Does anyone else here suffer the “premonition” effects of this?… or am I the only one?
I’ve read on here that many have “heard” that one eye twitch means good and the other bad… but how many here really believe this to be true for them?
Anyway…
My left upper lid has been twitching for about a month. I am happy to see that I am no the only one ready to just tape my eye closed. I have had this twitch before and I always get it when I am traveling and in a stressfull situation. The problem is that it messes with my vision because it seems to slightly squeeze my eyball.
I travel around the country for a living and work with lawyers. Enough said? Needless to say I drink lots of caffiene and get very little sleep when I am on the job.
My upper right eyelid has been driving me nuts for about a year and a half. It used to not be so bad. It would just come and go. But now it’s a constant annoying reminder. It doesn’t close or affect my vision. It just twitches for the whole world to see. And yes it is noticable. I go to the chiropractor every 2 weeks and that hasn’t helped at all. In fact, at times it has made it worse. I think i’m going to go to the dr. real soon and get some botox and possibly have the nerve removed. I give up!
Guys,
Lower right on and off since early feb… also top right, top left and bottom left… They work in shifts as it were.
Anyway, my doctor said it was likely to be stress. I have been drinking camomile tea which has helped me…
Just thought I mention it, not sure if it would work for anybody else…
Good luck
feels good to know that there are so many out there with the same problem as me. my right eyelid flickers continuously and its so annoying! i can’t even complain about it much bcos it seems so silly. anyway i’m going to try out :
getting more sleep
having calcium and magnesium
doing some eye exercises (which i have been too lazy to try)
neck and shoulder exercises too.
this is my action after reading this wonderful and very comforting and educative blog! thanks fellow-sufferers and all the best in our common fight against the GREAT BLINK!
lin.
I have had a left upper eyelid twitch for about 3 months now… ever since I started my new job. I have googled eye twitches a few times and I’m aware of the possible causes. BUT HOW CAN I MAKE IT GO AWAY!!!!!!?? I don’t drink coffee, but I do drink caffienated soda. Should I quit? I don’t think I drink enough for it to cause a twitch.
I really think that the cause of MY twitch is staring at my computer all day at work. I have tried wearing my glasses, not wearing my glasses, taking breaks to look out the window, and it’s STILL TWITCHING. I eat bananas AND take a multi-vitamin. I obviously can’t quit my job! Any suggestions? Or must i just continue SUFFERING???
Hi Fellow Twitchers,
Thanks for all the info. I have had on and off twitching for 4 days. I got so many ideas from you all and will try some of the remedies. I will let you know if I find out anything else.
Lisa
Hey everyone,
The whole twiching thing is a huge nuisance, but now it’s gone. I thought I’d share my story to potentially help people out. Basically my eyes started twitching sporadically for a couple of weeks. I started to notice it more when I began dating someone new and became extremely self-conscious. Assuming it was my contacts, I wore glasses for a day and switched up my contacts. To my dismay, the twitching got worse–it happened for a few seconds every 5 to 15 minutes! No, I wasn’t stressed (I had been much more stressed in the past w/o twitching) and no I wasn’t tired because I don’t have to be at work until 11! So basically I thought I was some crazy freak and I wondered if this man would continuing dating an incessant twitcher. Finally, I saw on this site that vitamin deficiency could cause some problems. I looked up magnesium (it’s found in spinach, fish, a bunch of stuff i don’t eat)…furthermore, it turns out my one-a-day vitamins on has 5% of my daily value of magnesium. So, I bought some supplements (as well as a potassium supplement). Twitching continued that day, was less frequent the next and was gone the day after that!! So happy! In a nut shell, magnesium may be the key!
My upper left eyelid twitches for about 3 seconds at a time taking 2-3 seconds break for the next occurance. At times it lasts for a minute or two then it disappears then it comes back again.
It all started when I used a sample of lubricating eyedrops given to me by my optometrist about 2 weeks ago. I complained of headaches and eye redness. She said I have healthy eyes and I just need to lubricate them and wear computer glasses.
I know it’s quite illogical that the twitching is caused by the eyedrops (although I stopped using them after 2 drops) but that’s the only thing I did differently. I have been drinking coffee all my life, I am stressed at work, I lack sleep and I eat bananas at least twice a week. Last night I started taking multivitamins because my grandma advised that vitamin B helps in restless leg syndrome. I thought that should help my restless eyelid too. This problem is really annoying and I have it for two weeks now. Hope it goes away soon!!!
I was taught that the eye twitching thing was a gift of premonition, and that when the right eye was twitching something good was going to happen or make you happy and when it was the left something would make you mad or sad and nine times out of ten it has been accurate. Usually if the twitching was prolonged we chalked it up to stress. We ate plenty bananas, took vitamins, and we are not coffee drinkers. Maybe some of you have the gift also and just didn’t know it.
OKAY SO MY EYELIDS BEEN TWICHING FOR AWHILE NOW AND ITS HAPPENED TO ME BEFORE BY IT WASN’T LIKE AN EVERY DAY THING LIKE IT IS NOW…LIKE ILL JUST BE SITTING IN CLASS…NOT PAYING ATTENTION TO THE TEACHER BUT FOR SOMETHING ELSE AND IT JUST STARTS TWITCHING LATELY I HAVE BEEN DRINKING COFFEE AFTER WE PRAY AT HOME NOT SURE IF IM STRESSED OUT CUZ OF MY MOTHERS DEATH OR W/E BUT MY THIGH HAS ALSO BEEN TWITCHING AND RIGHT NOW MY UPPER LIP JUST TWITCHED BUT I WANTED TO KNOW IF ALL THIS TWITCHING IS CAUSED BY THE SAME THING AS IN STRESS, SLEEP, AND CAFFINE…
PRINCESS
So this blog has been rolling for 4 years now yet still the same things are being said about the notorious eye twitch. i think everyone will have experienced it at least once in their lives, some worse and for longer than others.
I have eaten bananas and had a very healthy diet my whole life being a sportsman and all that. The lack of sleep theory is bollocks, so is the one about stress, and obviously the one about eating bananas!
So i propose a new theory…
Like with any sickness, illness or disease, when you think about it, it seems a whole lot worse than it is. For example, when we think about a headache – it pounds and pounds. but when we keep ourselves busy – the headache seems as if it is not there.
Its all psychological!
Now i dont know why an eye twitch may begin, but again maybe thats psychological or related to emotions. I have had eye twitches for short periods in the past but none as bad as i have at present…and i believe that it began as a result of an emotional trauma i had at the end of Jan. My grandma died, and it seemed like i was the only 1 in my family that was upset about it…i bawled my eyes out for a while and miss my gran ever since. Obviously im not as upset anymore but it backs up my point about emotions and psychology. or maybe it was my crying, something i hadnt done in years. but having said that, i havent felt such sadness…ever, im only young!
There is always an explanation for something, and we always try to think of one (particularly doctors), but maybe the explanation in this case is for once not physiological. Maybe its psychological, something we cannot explain, and never will…and something that we need to accept.
One thing i do know is that yes the twitch pisses you off, to the point where it makes you wanna punch urself in the face. However, the sooner you ignore it, the sooner you will realise that your twitch has disappeared.
Peace
Andy
Ok, after reading a few dozen comments, I’ve come to the conclusion that we’re all in the dark about what’s going on… I can tell you that I personally never started having eye twitching until I tried to quit smoking and drinking and followed a regular sleeping pattern… Strange huh… If I drink alcohol I don’t have any eye twitching…probably cause I’m relaxed and since alcohol seems to thin the blood (I think) then if there is any blood vessel pushing on a nerve then it is relaxed as well. I am going bonkers with this eye twitching thing. Mine happens to be my upper right eyelid and it is the most annoying thing, but massaging the eyesocket and lid seems to make it stop for a while… just don’t push too hard…I injured my eyeball once…lol not fun after that! Anyways, I think it’s a forshadow of some sort of medical problem that seriously needs to be researched since my main concern is stroke either in my brain or in my face. A doctor said it was a vitamin or other chemical defeciency, but I think they are just as clueless about it. Anyways, I offer no solutions, I’m just another victim hoping for some releif!!!!
My name is Jasmine, and I’m a Twitcher! 😉 I’ve been having this left upper eyelid twitch for almost a week. It is quite annoying. I could be doing anything and all of the sudden my eyelid starts vibrating and I can see my eye lashes moving. Its definitely something else. I am not sure how many people actually notice it, but its making me feel self conscious. It could be many things causing it. I don’t eat many bananas… and I am unable to take multivitamins. I will probably try the Vitamin B idea. I’m a single Mom so I know that I’m stressed, and I don’t sleep enough… I have been doing research trying to figure out what’s wrong with me. I’m so glad to have found this site. Its so much nicer to hear that I’m not the only one, and that it could be as simple as diet and rest. I have read many sites say its a more serious problem, such as Bells Palsy, MS, and other neurological disorders. It is a relief to read that its possible that the twitching could be something else that’s not as serious. I hope that everyone in this Club of Twitchers finds relief. So that we may all gain some confidence as we look into our future without our eyelids vibrating. ;):);):)
At the end of the day peeps, you should never rely on the internet as a reliable source of information, particularly when it comes to personal health issues.
IF it were a symptom of a serious condition then the medical world would know about it, and whats causing it, plus millions of people would be very sick by now!
Its a minor thing that comes and goes, like eczma for example. And should certainly be nothing to worry about. Forget about it, and it will be gone before you can even remember you even had the damn twitch!!!
love n peace to all my fellow twitchers
Andy

OMG.. I believe that for me, this is a premonition and I do have this “gift” … I have ALWAYS believed this and have been keeping this secret all my life.
It always comes true.. except for me, it is my left eye that brings good/happy news.
And my right eye twitch is bad/sad news.
I have tried everything to stop this. I don’t want this gift.
This is my third post on this blog… as I read it a lot hoping to fine someone else who feels as I do.
I’ll be checking back here to see if you or anyone else would like to communicate about this further.
peace to all
Hello yet again another fellow twitcher i have been having this ANOYING eye twich for about 2-3 weeks in my uper left eye seems to be common among the coments here…
but its been doing it almost constantly when i remember it like now its not stoping….. punching yourself in the eye is not advised. i dont know whats wrong with me maby stress i dont work soiknow thats not it ohh it just went away its probly because of lack of vitamens i dont realy know but im glad to know its so common but not that glad that it takes about a month to go away…
anyways cool blog.
Well-maybe you have found your calling in life-an Eye Twitch Coordinator.
Well-what about medications? I never had eye twitching before. But suddenly my body fell into pieces and the doctors are giving me an entire pharmacy daily. And now the eye has a permanent twitch. Each doctor blames it on another medication. Once I went on strike and stopped ALL me meds, only to get yelled at by my neurologist (his office didn’t return BOTH my calls).
Anyway, either my meds are causing my eye to twitch (only the right eye) or the multiple small to moderate lesions in my brain are causing it. Or the sleep apnea, or the ………………
Frankly, I think it is neurological. A wild guess.
dude i have had this twitchy thing in my left eye for like a month now! it will not get a life! i get like 12 hours of sleep a night(spring break), i drink mostly water, i eat some bananas, but i dont take vitamins. i am ready to stab my eye out!!
finnally a mecca site for eyelid twitching. I thought it was just me. hey youve found your blog niche market.
This site is like Twitchers Anonymous. Wild. I have been “pulsing” in the lower right eyelid for going on three weeks. My husband thought it was blood pressure related (since it does seem heart pulsing-like) and my bottom number on my BP was about 90 (very high for moi). Of course the stress is kicking as my hubby has had major surgery, I’ve slept at the hospital and then gone to work like a zombie…yes, I had to go to work, just started a new job, and I have a 2 year old.
I don’t eat great.
Have never eaten bananas (I just sung that Gwen Stefani song as I attempted to type that correctly).
Am on 2 Pepsis a day.
Who knows…but I appreciate everyone’s sense of humor and the insight.
Muchos Gracias,
K
(PS My husband was in Japan and I visited there, Okinawa…you are one lucky dog.)
Oh me LOL, a blog for eye lid twitching. ROFLOL way to funny, but then I’m here reading and my lower right eyelid is twitching and has been for almost 3 weeks. I was googling to see if there were any sites with advice on stopping this twitching.
Now, I’ve read here that if it’s the right lid twitching that it’s a sign something good is going to happen and premonitions. I do believe and have had premonitions. shhhhh, I think I’ll just let the lid twitch and see what happens in the future.
Just have to save this “sight” to my favorites and read here again some time. This has been very interesting.
Still twitching most sincerely, (oh me LOL)
Scoop
Hellow fellow twitchers. My upper left eyelid has been twitching for almost 3 weeks. I can hardly focus when I’m driving–not a good thing on the 405 freeway. Funny thing though, I began my low fat, low carb diet about the same time. It’s possible my twitch is the result of a vitamin deficiency, so I’m hoping the vitamin, banana remedy will work for me. Will let you know if it does.
Peace
P.S. Really cool blog!
My word…what a long mail chain this is,, I just had to contribute!! I’m a twitcher too, and yes it is stress and the rest. If I’m not biting the inside of my mouth to bits or picking down the edges of my fingernails, I know I am stress-free, but when the twitching starts it’s a sign for me to well and truely slow down. I am getting married in a few weeks abroad with a reception back in England in September, so hopefully somewhere in the middle I might rest. I have a condition which causes my muscles to spasm easily and have been told Magnesium is good for that, so maybe I’ll start those again.
Wow, I feel so at home. Darn left upper lid… it has been goin on for over a month now..and getting worse! it probably twitches at least once every 30 minutes! aaaaaaahhhhhhhh like many of you, i do not believe much has changed in my daily routine..besides taking caffeine pills..but i stopped that [sigh]
i’m kind of worried . . . i’m 23, it too early to cerebral neoplasms!
I had an eyelid twitch for 9 months… on and off all day long. Had MRI, bloodwork, eye exam… the works. Then went on Cipro for a bladder infection and it disappeared. Turned out it was most likely a sinus infection and the Cipro cleared it up without my even realizing I had one.
All the scientific explanation suits well, at least a consolation to those suffering from it. Not to terribly disturb anyone, I have been having some eye twitching episodes. The native Asian say they have meaning. Theirs is not stress, coffee or loss of sleep. According to some, if the left upper eye twitchs, you be in conflict with someone. It the lower left twitchs, you weekend will be ruined. If the right lower eye twitch, good news on the way and when the upper right lid twitchs, you will meet someone you have not met a long time. Hows that…spooky? Make your analysis, check it out.
So the Eye-lid twitchers of the world unite! Glad to join the group. My left upper eyelid has been twitching for a week and it’s driving me crazy!
Three weeks nearly non-stop, lower right lid and visible to others. My face feels tired in the area. It seems better when I’m looking more upwards than downwards. This most recent episode is clearly related to recent work stress. I agree with Andy, who said it is so annoying that you want to punch yourself in the face! It has happened before and gone away. It’s also allergy season, so who knows? OK, just had to chime in. Good luck fellow twitchers!
It took me many weeks to find this, but you’ve actually made me a lot happier than nothing more serious is wrong.
My bottom left eyelid has been doing this.. it’s more like tickling and doesn’t cause any problems beyond worry (ironic isn’t it.. stress causing more stress?) but recently my right top eyelid has been twitching too which has been causing a few more issues but nothing major. I’ve had twitches occasionally in other muscles away from the face but they’ve never lasted.
Either way.. I guess it’s more vitamins, less caffeine and less stress I need
please ..i want to be a body builder naturally…without taking any kind of drug,so please keep on telling method
my near side near lower eye lid has been twiching for a couple of weeks, it happenes every now and then.
ned flanders from the simpsons gets it when he’s stressed out., it happend when homer badly rebuilt neds house, and when neds left handed shop wasn’t working, it usely happens just before ned kicks off,
so dont push me i must be close to the edge!!!!!!!!!!
Hi to all u twitchers!!!!
My eye twitch started approx 2 months ago, around about the same time i was diagnosed with hashimoto’s thyroiditis!!! I have a goitre and was told that my left lobe was swollen, i also have lost some hearing in my left ear and it just so happens that its my LEFT EYE that keeps twitching (COINCIDENCE?)
It true that i have been very stressed lately, but i dont drink much caffeine and i sleep the same as i always have done (7 – 8 hours, some broken sleep, but thats been going on years!!!)
I feel like my left side is fallen apart!!!!!! And i want to rip my bloody left eye out of its socket!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Much love and sympathy twitchers x
After about 2 months twitch free … it has started to come back. Lower left eye lid has begun to flicker.
Does anyone else get that kinda … proto-twitch stage, where it hasn’t really made up its mind whether so go for a full blown twitch yet … and it just kinda … pulls?
You desperately try and hold it down, breathe … do relaxation exercises … anything to not think about the twitch … however through all this you always know … the twitch will win! It’s just toying with you like some horrible squat gremlin crouched on your eyebrow, with filthy taloned nails inserted ready to …. twitch!
I think that it isn’t Myocemia or whatever … it’s possession plain and simple. Maybe the twitch is a kinda infernal morse code … whatever you do … don’t translate it or you will open a portal to the great beyond and never be seen again.
Happy Twitching
SO ANNOYED! My eye has been twitching for two days. I guess I’m stressed. I get enought sleep, only drink one cup of coffee per day. Hm? Must be stress! Geeze, but it is annoying. I was having a meeting with a co-worker and couldn’t even concentrate due to the stupid twitching!
ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I am so pleased to have found this site how amazing to read all your stories, however i am a bottom right eyelid twitcher and feel slightly left out with all you lefties ,but hey we are all in the same club .GOOD LUCK ALL ,i have been twithching for 8 weeks now so a fairly new member .When can we all meet would be great to all twitch together , take care fellow twitchers x
Hi everyone, another upper-lefty. I am somewhat relieved to see that this is common. I’m going on about 3 weeks now of the twitching, and it sucks. I do agree with most of your theories on the causes, and possible remedies. Good luck to everyone, stay strong and God bless!
kymia = cond. of involuntary contracting/twitching of a muscle
What a relief to know I am not a freak! My right upper eyelid started twitching about 4 months ago. I have some days it goes on all day and other days are more random. But it does happen everyday. I like the potassium and no caffene theory, I think I will start there, more bananas and less diet coke (although, I don’t drink that much, maybe 20oz a week). I am not under any particular added stress, my sleep is restful and at least 6 1/2 to 7 hours.
I was actually happy to come across this site on google. It has been informative and more helpful than any of the medical sites I looked into. Actually, what made me google it was my eye has been twitching since I went to bed last night, it is now 2:00 pm, and still twitching!!! Thanks for all the info, I will be checking in periodically to see how everyone is dealing….
AHHHHH!My upper left eye lid is twitching. I have noticed that it is the most commonly reported twitch on this website. I am having it every 10 to 15 minutes for the last four days. Damn stress.
AHHH!!! We ALL can’t have TUMORS for Pete’s sake!! My lower left eyelid has been twitching every couple of hours for the last 4 days and I am so annoyed!!! I am sleeping ok, although I chase after my crazy 2 yr old constantly, and always feel tired…I have always had anxiety and stress….my twitching started out of the blue after a week of taking allergy meds and nasal spray…I also had a facial the day before it started….coincidence?! Ha! I think not!
My eyelid twitching started in the right eye after a bad twisting fall in October 2006. It has been going on ever since, some days worse than others. It started on the right and now has progressed to the left eye as well. My doctor told me it is associated with low calcium in December ’06, so I started taking calcium at that time and have seen no improvement. She told me today to increase the dose to 600 mg twice a day. So we will see what happens. I’ll give it a month or so on increased calcium and see if anything improves. I asked the opthalmologist about it in February. She had no idea what was causing it, but said she has had it from reading too much. I thought she might be more informative.
u wont be surprised…i sellotaped my right eye giving it a sort of punishment for refusing to listen to me.
it has its own way of behaving and functioning…
but all in vain….2 months now..no way of stopping it.
comming to think of it…from my childhood…whenever i felt sleepy…i rubbed my eyes hard…i feel itchy then…or vice versa…whenever i feel itchy in my eye during late nights…i used to rub them hard…for me it was a signal that my eyes were tired and i need to sleep…
so i wonder constand rubbing over my eyes had damaged something and now resulted in this annoying twiching.
i even have muscle spasm in my feet…especially when they get cold in winters/nights or if soaked in water at beach or from swimming…the fingers on my feet move involuntarily over eachother…its painful too…the middle area of my feet have a painful twich as if a needle has been poked. but its not regular though..had it got any relation? anyone faced this?
I posted on here over a year ago and thought I’d update. I still get twitches in my eyelids/brows. They do seem to be less common in warmer weather, as I was getting to the point toward the end of last summer that I went 3 weeks without a major twitching outbreak. Then the cold weather set in and I was back on a vicious daily cycle again. It has slowed down somewhat over the last couple of months as we head toward summer.
Here are a few conclusions I have come to: magnesium supplements don’t help (I tried several different types too). I have taken them to the point of causing diarrea with no obvious change to the twitching pattern. Caffeine/coffee isn’t the culprit, in fact I seem to do better the more coffee/soft drinks/chocolate I intake! I also must rule out the stress factor as I have been in many stressful situations with my job and personal life, and unless only certain stresses trigger it, it just isn’t consistant.
Hello Everyone…Well, I am a lower right eye twitcher. Man…it’s been about a month now. It mostly does it when I do something like, sneeze, cough, YAWN is huge close my eyes. I take vitamens, not under any stress, weather is getting warmer, Sleep is mostly ok. Not sure what it is but holy cow, it is annoying. Stinks that there really is no “cause” so to speak and no freaking cure!! UGH!!! Well, nice to know that there are more of us out there.
So when you say eye twitch you think about something that causes you to blink involuntarily right? Mine is different, looks like a muscle under my lower left eyelid is “jumping” and rippling all day. And it’s non-stop. I have no stress, good sleep, had stopped tea and started vitamins for a week. And it is still there…
I’m going on 3 weeks of an almost constant upper right eyelid twitch. This has happened to me through the years, but they were seldom and not lasting.
I am 42 years old, consume very little caffeine, but I am in front of the computer 12+ hours/day. I eat well, take my multi-vitamin daily, but rarely exercise…
Jan (Postings from years ago) mentioned about the calf and foot cramps. I have also had those, and I know I don’t drink enough water.
I’m going to try the water route. Exercise is a four letter word to me. If the water doesn’t work, I will back off from the computer usage. If that doesn’t work, I may have to try exercise
Good luck to all of you. If I twitch at you just think that I am winking at you. 😉
Dear ouchmyeye,
As far as the foot cramps go, I have found warmth is the key. I now wear socks to bed and am rarely bothered with the earth shaking jump out of the bed cramps.
This is an eye twitching blog, sorry to go off topic, but I can see where these muscle spasms might be connected.
Sincerely,
Wendy
Like most people on this site, I’m an upper left lid twitcher. It’s not very noticeable, but makes me feel very self-conscious. Been going on about 6 weeks now, every 15 minutes or so, and started with stress at work.
Reading some of these contributions made me cry with laughter, but I’m still twitching. I have a very healthy diet – bananas, salads and food supplements every day – drink plenty of water and green tea, and exercise regularly.
I thought I’d try someone’s suggestion that alcohol helps. I’ve been teetotal for decades, so thought it might shock the wretched lid into behaving, but it didn’t – just gave me palpitations as well!
Thanks for the laughs. Great to feel part of a club!
Hi,
I have had left upper eyelid twitching for 2-3 weeks now. Not sure what caused it. I hav ebeentaking supplements Vitamins for years now and recently started choelst-off PLant sterols to lower my cholesterol. Not sure if tahts whats causing it..have also had some joint pains recently like the ball of my feet hurt….and stress in knees and waist..
Anyone noticed these sideeffects with Cholestoff plus the eyelid twitching?
hahah. I’m sorry- it’s funny to me how you wrote about the mass number of people who came to your site for eye twitching from Google (I am one of them).
My problem’s not really even bad enough to consider an eye twitch. It actually feels like I can feel my heartbeat in the vein near my eyelid, but it doesn’t force me to blink. It goes on and off, and it only lasts a day or so each time, probably from sleep.
It’s nice of you to put this information up. :] My cousin’s an optometry student so I know about this.
My problem my my lower lid twitching. It twitches a lot in the corner. One time I told my son there was a worm underneath my skin, just joking, of course. It felt like a worm. My bottom lids used to “flutter” a lot. That was a different feeling. Anybody ever had their bottom eye bags flutter like a butterfly is hatching under your skin? It kind of feels like a bunch of bubbles popping and crashing against eachother. What does your twitch feel like?
Anyway, I tried some weird home remedies because I will try anything.
1. put an ice cube on the lid
2. squeeze the flutterbag
3.poke away the twitch
No success!!
Anybody else do weird things to try with no avail? success??
Are you an upper or a lower bag twitcher?
Does the whole eye bag flutter or does just part if it twitch like the corner? right now I am having corner twitches but they BOTH are annoying as hell and oh yes! If the twitch is big enough, people notice!
Hi Twitchers,
Some of you might want to consider it can be Allergys. Everytime I get around things I am allergic to, my twitching starts. Sometimes it’s the eye and brow and may included the nose area. If I stay away from these smells my twitching goes away after a couple of days and stays gone until I come across mildew, poppouri, or smoke of any kind, then it will start again.
Good luck and God Bless.
Elaine
You know, I am in the midst of an upper AND lower right eyelid twitch that’s been there for a couple of weeks now. I just left a very stressful career, and have begun a new one. I remember going thru this during my last job—which was so stressful.
I have a good friend who is an opthalmic surgeon, and he had me come in last time I had this, and basically took a small tool and turned my eylid inside out. He drained the ducts around my eye, a lot of stuff came out of them, and the twitching went away. For something like 3 years. It was environmental toxins, combined with allergies. I need to go in and see him again, and get rid of this damned thing. I’ve tried to do it myself (with a Q-tip) but nothing works as well as the little spatula-shaped tool my doctor friend used.
Good luck!
Beth
I have suffered eyelid twitching on and off for several years. It seems to come and go for no apparent reason.
I eat a good healthy diet and do not suffer stress (well no more than most!). I drink a couple of cups of coffee a day so caffeine is not a problem either.
I think that when the eyelids feel like they are jumping about to the sufferer it is barly visable to onlookers unless it is pointed out to them.
I would certainly sooner live with it than have some sort of medical intervention.
Anyway, it is good to know that I am not on my own.
Hi Everybody!
I beleive that eye twitching is definitly related to stress. Before I left my ex-husband about 4 years ago, my eye would twitch almost constantly, about a week after I left him, I noticed that it had stopped. Now 4 years later I am in a very stressful job and it is twitching again! Not as much as it used to, just about once an hour. I can usually make it stop by putting pressure on it with my finger.
I am so glad that I am not the only one with this annoying issue! This has been going on off and on for like 4 years now!! This particular episode has been lasted over 5 weeks now!!! I hate it when I am trying to have a conversation with someone and it just starts to twitch like a motor. I have to touch it to try to stop it and I know that people probably think I am a freak or something! I do believe it is related to stress but then again I have had it when I am not really stressed at all. Will someone please find the majic cure soon!!!
Hi, twitchers —
I wrote a while ago complaining about a lower left eyelid twitch that had been going on for several weeks. I had not been under any stress, had been sleeping well, had not changed my diet in any obvious way, had not changed my habits of taking a daily multivitamin or avoiding caffeine. And yet this eyelid twitch had persisted more or less constantly for about 2 months! I’ve had eyelid twitches before, but none lasted as long as this recent episode.
I had reached the point where I had practically stopped thinking about the twitching and had almost accepted it as the new normal for me.
A few days ago I realized that the twitching had stopped. I don’t even know when it disappeared (it could have been as long ago as a month or as recent as 10 days ago) or if the cessation was sudden or gradual. My lifestyle hadn’t changed in any way that I know of.
So the disappearance of the twitch is as mysterious to me as its arrival.
So, take heart, twitchers. If your experience is like mine, your twitching will one day disappear on its own, without any assistance whatsoever from you or your doctor.
waaah id like to join the club too.
my EENT told me to take vit b complex vitamins after every meal.its going to help cure the muscle spasm.
sighhh.. it sucks.
My eyes began to twitch about 7 months ago when I began drinking bottles of wine. I was severly stressed about because my mother was in excrutiating pain and she would scream and holler at night, and scare me out of my sleep… Well my right eyelid jumps and pulls downward whenever I think mean thoughts or do mean things. When I stop and look at things postively, then it quickly stops jumping
Greetings,
Like most of you, I have found this site through countless searches on google and yahoo for eye twitching, twitching, eye spasms, blepharospasm and a host of other search terms. I am a 40 year old male who is paralyzed with fear about the consequences. While I am living as an entrepreneur(with no insurance),the stress levels have been overwhelming for several years.
As my father had passed away over 10 years ago from complications due to MS, I have become obsessed in seeking answers for my sudden twitching and uncontrolable movement both eyes. Mostly my left, but it does include my right as well as times. I have recognized this twitching over the past 2 weeks and I am desperate for relief. I feel them moving beyond my control when they are open or closed. I am so scared. The thought of losing vision is so scary to me.
I have started (today) a raw foods diet and cleanse that includes Green (Barley) Juice and too many suplements to counts. I am under guidance from a guru, named Pat, working with Gary Null in NYC and operating out of his shop on the West Side. I am an optimist by nature, but fear of disease is sometime crippling. I appreciate the opportunity to read and become inspired by some of your stories. I wish the best for all of you suffering and hope that we can all be healthy.
If you listen to Reggae Music or enjoy Caribbean Life, please check out http://www.RockersItsDangerous.com. It is my website. I appreciate the support. Bless.

Jake
I think I have a cure – I am convinced the twitching occurs from lack of sleep. While most of us feel we are getting a good nights sleep, we often get the nights of tossing and turning but still feel okay the next morning. The problem, for me at least, happens after I have woken a few times during the night and broken that REM stream. After a few weeks of catch up the problem goes away on its own. Happy twitching everyone!
